Block B(Hangul: 블락비) is a South Korean boy band formed by Cho PD under the label Brand New Stardom. On April 15, 2011, they debuted on KBS Music Bank with their promotional single 'Freeze!' ("그대로 멈춰라!"). The group consists of seven members Zico (Woo Jiho), Lee Tae Il, B-Bomb (Lee Min Hyuk), Ahn Ji Hyo, U-Kwon (Kim Yoo Kwon), Park Kyung, and P.O (Pyo Ji Hoon). Each of The participants have various skills, rapping, songwriting, dancing and singing respectively. The group works in the hip-hop genre, successfully combining it with other various genres.

In February 2011, Cho PD announced the formation of a seven-member hip-hop group with $1.4 million in funding as part of Creating Korea's Eminem Project. He added that they will be mentored by other famous hip-hop artists, including Verbal Jint, Skull, and Rhymer.

Block B is an abbreviation of the term Blockbuster, meaning that Block B is a group that has high hopes and the opportunity to become a music industry giant.

After the group performed with the song "Freeze!", they continued to perform with the track "Wanna B". Later the song "Freeze!" was banned by the Committee for the Protection of Youth, which considered that the song expressed unhealthy dating methods. This meant that the sale of albums to anyone under 19 was prohibited, and the song could not be broadcast until 10 p.m.

June 22, 2011 The first episode of MTV Match Up! aired, featuring two newcomers to the Korean show business: Block B and B1A4. It was in this episode that Block B's music video for their mini-album title track "Tell them" was shown. The show allowed both groups to showcase their musical talents and each member's personalities through weekly missions on the show.

June 23, 2011 Block B released their first mini-album "New Kids on the Block", consisting of three new songs + three songs from their first single + 2 instrumental tracks. There was also a song on the new album "Freeze!", in which the words were corrected, which made it possible to lift the ban on selling the album and broadcasting.

Each of the group members had work experience, such as creating mixtapes, participating in shows and competitions, and recording digital singles. Before their debut, Block B wrote at least 100 songs, some of which were included in Zico's solo album.

February 2, 2012 The group released their second mini-album entitled "Welcome to the Block", consisting of six new songs. The title song was “NalinA” with fiery rhythms and a charismatic video inspired by gorillas 😀
And even before the album's release, Block B faced yet another obstacle along the way. Two songs from the album “LOL” And “Did You Or Did You Not” were banned first by KBS, then by the Ministry of Human Equality and Family.
To support your idols, fandom Air Force signs a petition with over 10,500 votes to reconsider the banning of two songs from the album.

Almost immediately after the comeback with Nalina, Block B went to Thailand, where they became involved in a scandal related to their behavior on television. An interview given by Block B in Thailand was mistranslated, causing further problems.
The interview given by Block B caused a great resonance among the people of Thailand, who considered this interview an insult to their people and country.
2RM member Nichkhun (who is Thai by origin) heard this interview from someone else and also perceived it as disrespect for Thailand.
He decided to tweet about it, and the rest of the 2RM group decided to support him in this.
Also, other artists also decided to take advantage of the situation and expressed their opinions about Block B's actions.
Fans went over to the side of anti-fans, organizing protests and strikes.
Since the guys from the group were unable to access the Internet, they could not apologize to netizens and residents of Thailand.
And the Air Force issued apologies from itself and Block B, trying to reconcile this situation peacefully.
But the situation continued to escalate and get out of control. The guys finally managed to get online and made an official apology to the people of Thailand and the band members 2RM.

But this also did not stop the wave of negativity that poured towards the Block B group.
Hottest continued their attacks and switched to the guys' relatives, leaving unpleasant comments to Yu-Kwon's brother, mother and brother Zico, who are on social networks.

The comments were not only nasty, they wished death on the participants and their families!

Block B leader Zico, surrounded by controversy, decided to shave his hair as an act of self-reproach.

A representative from Brand New Stardom told ENEWS on the 20th, “The members cried because of this first bitter experience, and they deeply regret and are thinking hard about their behavior. Zico, who especially feels the burden of responsibility as a leader, rushed past me with a razor." Regarding further promotions, they said, “We are currently discussing this internally. We are seriously considering the possibility of changing the liberated concept of Block B.”
Due to the current situation and fans' backlash towards the group, maknae P.O was admitted to the hospital on February 24th.

A few months later, the storm of emotions subsides, and Block B lie low.

A little later, Block B released a video for the song “Close My Eyes”, along with the re-released album “Welcome To The Block”, which was released on 3 April 0, 2012.

In May, Zico, the leader of the group Block B, temporarily ceases his activities due to health problems. The group organizes concerts without a leader. Zico's parts are read by Yu-Kwon.
While the group travels around the country and gives mini-concerts, the leader is working hard on a new album.

May 8, 2012 a video for the song was released "Action", which lacks leader Zico. The clip captivates netizens with its charm and playful spring mood.

In July-August, Block B decides to restore their popularity. A certain reality show Block B & BBC World Camp opens, which shows the life of the BBC in the Block B camp along with the group members.

After a long silence October 17, 2012 Block B are releasing a full-length album, which includes 12 songs (the limited edition album comes with an additional two songs sung acapella). This time the group was inspired by pirates. All songs from the album are different from each other. There are gentle ballads, fiery tracks, and powerful and charismatic songs. The title track was the song "Nilili Mambo". The video and album are blowing up all the charts, and the ranks of fans begin to swell at extraordinary speed.
This time there are no problems with the album, no bans.
With the release of their new album, Block B showed that they will not change and will continue to explode music industry, surprising fans from all over the world and taking them with them to conquer new heights.
Before the release of the video, Stardom releases 7 teasers with different songs that characterize each of the group members.
In addition to the new album and video, Zico's new mixtapes are coming out in October, which pleases all BBCs from all over the world.
After a dizzying comeback, the legendary show Match Up! returns, telling about the life of the guys outside the stage. The concept for the third part of Match Up! — to tell what the guys experienced after the Thai incident, how they did not lose heart, but continued to fight.

Everything goes well, but on January 4, 2013, the group announces a conflict with its publishing agency, which results in legal proceedings. The cause of the conflict was the non-payment of wages to the group members for their work.

For six months the group has not been active as Block B, but some members work solo (B-Bomb releases dance videos, Zico works in the underground industry, P&O releases mixtapes)
In June 2013, the court did not confirm the cancellation of the contract, checking the actions of the group members for the legality of solo work. The group is forced to work with Stardom Ent.©BLOCK B | Official Russian fan-club | RUSBLOCK

“They have already proven that their performances are different from what everyone is so used to. Their perfect dancing, powerful charm, Bang Yong Guk's impressive rap and Jelo's high-speed rap make a great combination. A strong voices Daehyun and Youngjae complete the perfect picture. In addition, the performance, consisting of energetic and aggressive movements, attracts attention from the very beginning. Even the most popular and experienced bands should pay attention to them.”

Shortly before their debut, all members dyed their hair the same color and became platinum blonde. They personally took part in the development and creation of stage costumes, concepts, writing lyrics and music for the album. As group member Yoo Youngjae said, "We didn't want to be too different from each other as we wanted to show the unity of the group on stage."

When we asked about the significant differences between B.A.R and other idol groups, Yongguk told us:

“We look brave. If you pay attention to the choreography of most male idol groups, you will notice that they all have signature moves. So sometimes they look better when they all dance together, but unlike them, we strive to show our strong point, and not cute and soft - the so-called “pleasure for the eyes.” That's why I think we're so different. Just like our music and style.”

Lawsuit against agency

On November 27, 2014, it became known that six members of the group V.A.R filed a lawsuit to cancel their contracts with the agency. According to a statement from the law firm, members of the group B.A.R filed a lawsuit against TS Entertainment in the Seoul Western District Court.

V.A.R.'s exclusive contracts with their company began in March 2011, and they claim that their contracts only benefited their company and were extremely unfair to the band members.

The terms of their contract state that the contract will last for a minimum of seven years, starting from the release of their first album (not from the date of the contract), which is much longer compared to other companies' contracts. Also, according to their statement, the contracts do not comply with laws regarding protection civil rights artists of their agency, do not take into account the artists' consent to anything, rights to privacy, etc.

The lawsuit also includes allegations of revenue sharing that benefited the company solely, and that they had to deal with conditions that put them at a disadvantage if the contract was terminated or the agency suffered damages.

Despite the unfair content of the contract, since their debut in January 2012, V.A.R. have released 11 albums in various formats and held concerts all over the world, including Korea, Japan, China and even as far away as Mexico. Although the band members had to deal with deteriorating health, they tried their best for their fans.

After a lengthy legal battle, the group managed to reach an understanding and compromise with the agency, and they returned to TS Entertainment on August 1, 2015.
