Envelope formats. Standard envelope sizes What it looks like

The dimensions of format C, created for envelopes, are predefined in ISO 269, and are also given in the table below, in millimeters and inches (convert to cm by dividing the mm value by 10). The diagram on the right shows the size of each envelope compared to a piece of A4 paper. In the US and North America, envelope sizes do not comply with ISO 216 as outlined on this page.

Series C Tolerances Envelope Sizes

ISO 216 tolerances for C-size envelope paper sizes are the same as for A- and B-size sheet paper and are as follows:
  • ± 1.5 mm (0.06 in) for sizes up to 150 mm (5.9 in)
  • ±2 mm (0.08 in) for sizes ranging from 150 to 600 mm (5.9 to 23.6 in)
  • ± 3 mm (0.12 in) for any dimension above 600 mm (23.6 in)

Format C sizing for envelopes

Format C of envelopes defines the values of sizes C (N) as the geometric mean between the sizes of formats A (N) and B (N), i.e. dimensions C4 are the geometric mean of A4 and B4. This results in dimensions that fall between the two formats, which, when the envelope is made to measure, will ideally accommodate paper of the same size. For example, a C4 size envelope is ideal for an unfolded A4 sheet of paper.

It should be noted that C format envelopes also have an aspect ratio equal to the square root of 2 and because of this, an A4 sheet folded parallel to its smaller side will easily fit into a C5 envelope, and when folded twice more it will fit into a C6 format envelope.

The following diagrams show how C4, C5 and C6 envelopes compare to a sheet of A4 paper (the envelope is shown in brown and the piece of paper is grey), as you can see in the first diagram a C4 envelope can fit an entire A4 sheet, a C5 envelope can hold an A4 sheet folded in half (A5 sheet) and a C6 envelope can hold an A4 sheet folded in half (A6 sheet). This is the reason why these envelopes are sometimes referred to as A4, A5 or A6 size envelopes.

Envelope format DL sizes for business correspondence

DL envelope format for business correspondence

One of the most widely used business envelopes is the DL format. It does not fall under C format sizes as it has different proportions than the series. This envelope first appeared in Germany in the 1920s and was known as DIN Lang, but DL is now more often deciphered as "Dimension Lengthwise". This value is defined in the ISO envelope standards as the standard for the most commonly used size of business envelopes.

The dimensions of the DL format are 110 x 220 mm (4⅓" x 8⅔") and as such the DL envelope contains a sheet of A4 paper folded into 3 equal parts parallel to its smaller side.

Despite complaints from automatic sealing machine manufacturers that this format is a little small for secure packaging and the introduction of C6/5 envelopes measuring 114 x 229mm, the original DL size continues to be the most commonly used.
