In my (author – Dave Scott) self-defense courses for women, I am very often asked to announce a list of the most convenient and effective means of self-defense. I will present it in this article, but before that I would like to touch on several important issues.

First, don't be an easy target. Most real criminals and simply dangerous people who could somehow harm you do not want a fight at all. Therefore, they look for simple targets who are easy to intimidate and get everything they need without too much trouble. So . Don't walk down the street alone at night, staring at your smartphone. Don't leave the bar drunk at 2am. Remember that in most cases it is much easier to prevent a situation than to deal with its consequences later. But if you are already being attacked or threatened, then you must be ready to defend yourself, both on a psychological level and physically.

1. Pepper spray

I have been exposed to pepper spray several times during various exercises and training. And I will tell you that this is a very effective thing. But remember this means of self-defense not 100 percent effective. Some aggressors will still be able to act proactively and purposefully (albeit not as well) after using pepper spray.

So don't stand still after using it. Call for help and get out of there as quickly as you can. One of the important advantages of pepper spray is that the target does not have to be right next to you. Most of these products hit 10-15 feet (3-4 meters).

2. Tactical pen

A tactical pen stuck in the eye, neck or face is an excellent stopping factor that will likely scare off an attacker or give you time to retreat. The disadvantage of this means of self-defense is the need for close close contact. And a physically strong and fast aggressor will be able to block your blow. Therefore, the element of surprise is extremely important. Sometimes it is more effective to feign submission first before going on the offensive. And if you don’t want to shell out money for tactical pens, just buy a regular one, but with a tough and durable body.

3. Knife handle

A knife pen is a small stiletto, disguised in the body of a regular pen. As a rule, at one end there is a normal working rod, and at the other, closed end, there is actually a knife or stiletto. The aggressor certainly does not expect that the pen is suddenly in your hands.

4. Special “defense” keychain

There are special keychains that can be used as a means of self-defense. Most often, on the principle of brass knuckles with sharp spikes.

5. Pistol

Perhaps the most effective means of self-defense ever created by man. However, as with all other means of self-defense, it is extremely important that the owner of the pistol is well trained and knows how to use it effectively. If you prefer this option, then first find good firearms in your area.

6. Stun gun and taser

Stun guns and tasers can be extremely effective in stopping almost any aggressor. But it is important to remember that these are completely different means of self-defense. A stun gun can only be used effectively through direct contact, making you more vulnerable to an attacker. A taser is more similar to a pistol (and costs no less!), but it shoots wires that attach to the attacker and stun him from a distance. Stun guns are much cheaper, but they stun only while they are working and only while there is direct contact.

You also need to understand that whenever a weapon is pulled out during a beginning quarrel (whether by the aggressor or the potential victim), this indicates an escalation of the conflict, which makes it much more dangerous. It often happens that all the victim has to do is get self defense weapon, as the aggressor quickly takes possession of it and uses it against her. Don't let this happen to you! And NEVER forget that the best strategy in this case is to PREVENT a conflict situation. Always remember to maintain situational awareness and control yourself in potentially dangerous situations.

A feeling of security, peace of mind for yourself and your loved ones - these feelings are understandable and valuable for any person, but in our changing world, unfortunately, they are not available to everyone. Robberies and crimes against persons are not uncommon. Self-defense means will help in difficult times and give you more confidence in your own safety.

Defensive equipment that does not require a license is of the following types:

Stun guns. For example, a large telescopic stun gun, a stun gun with a flashlight, a stun gun in a car key fob, an inconspicuous stun gun and a powerful tazer using patented technologies that shoots an electric charge over several meters.
Pepper sprays and gels, including a classic pepper spray, a small one on a keychain, a special pepper gel for indoor use, and a special gel convenient for joggers.
Personal alarms. For example, an individual alarm for a child, for women and girls, and a device for motorists.

All these devices have only a defensive function and even if they end up in the hands of attackers, they will not be able to cause irreparable harm, such as when wounded by a cold weapon. The protective products presented in the article will allow the defender to gain time, escape from the attackers and call the police.

Description of the conditions for using self-defense devices, allowing you to make the most optimal choice

Today, the market offers a large number of self-defense products with different purposes, with their own positive and negative characteristics. The review contains devices suitable for women, drivers, children and joggers.

For people who have to walk along dark, deserted alleys, it would be best to use a can of pepper spray or a stun gun. The use of a personal alarm in these conditions will not be advisable; it is unlikely that anyone will hear it and come to the rescue.
Athletes running in parks will benefit from a pepper spray with a convenient attachment to the hand, in a state of combat readiness.
For people who have concerns about riding in elevators with strangers, indoor pepper gel is ideal. The use of a classic spray will have an effect on burglars in the elevator, and no one will hear the alarm.
To be able to repel various troubles associated with an attack on his health or property, the driver of the car should keep a stun gun or a can of pepper spray in the car, and wear a special deterrent alarm on the key fob.
A child is unlikely to cope with a pepper spray or a shocker, so it is preferable for him to use an individual alarm.

The most popular type among stun guns is a device that combines the stun gun itself and a flashlight. This type of protective device will be irreplaceable for those people who return home late through unlit streets. The most expensive example of Taser shockers, the professional model is used by the police. It allows you to stun an attacker from a distance of several meters.

Self-defense equipment without a license in Russia is the most effective means of self-defense

In accordance with the legislation of the Russian Federation, citizens can purchase various means of self-defense, including weapons. Some of them will require a license, while others can be purchased in the public domain. Means of self-defense that do not require permission can also be successfully used to protect yourself and loved ones. 4. The free sale of stun guns has led to the appearance of a huge number of low-quality devices on the market.

Light and sound self-defense means

Non-lethal means of self-defense also include light and sound weapons. It has a psychophysiological effect on the criminal using combinations of light and sound factors. Has a distracting and stunning effect. Moreover, it is so powerful that the attacker can temporarily stop seeing and hearing, including orienting himself in space.

Until recently, light-sound cartridges were available only in civilian self-defense weapons, for example, the Osa barrelless pistol, which was impossible to use without permission.

However, quite recently the light and sound self-defense device “Antidog” appeared. At the moment, this is the only weapon in this class that does not require a license for use in cases of necessary defense and constant carrying. Any citizen of Russia over 18 years of age can apply.

When the Antidog agent is fired, a loud sound and a bright flash are created. As a result, the enemy can be incapacitated even in city noise. These are effective, legal means of self-defense against dogs.

Pocket sirens are classified as passive self-defense devices. They make loud beeps. At the same time, they are unlikely to harm the attacker, but they will be able to distract the offender or stop unlawful actions. The main advantage is absolute age accessibility.

Today, choosing self-defense products is quite easy. There are several types of legal devices used in self-defense against illegal activities. You can purchase highly effective self-defense means without a license in specialized stores. It is enough to present your passport and be 18 years old at the time of purchase.

When protecting yourself and your loved ones, you can use objects that are not initially considered means of protection: a kitchen/household knife, an ax. There is a wide class of air guns. Effective when used, but not specifically intended for self-defense. You shouldn't get carried away with such things. There is a high probability of irreparable consequences. It is more convenient and safer for yourself to use specially created means of self-defense.

The list of self-defense items includes devices that differ in layout, principle of operation and the nature of the negative impact on the enemy.

Gas cans

They are considered the most accessible means of self-defense. Cheapness, size and ease of use make them extremely popular. The cans are filled with chemical compounds that have a strong effect on humans, causing burning, tears, and coughing. They differ in the type of spray (aerosol, jet, gel, foam). The place of use (indoor/outdoor) depends on this characteristic.

An important factor is weather conditions (in strong winds and rain it is not recommended to use it for self-defense). The maximum range of action is 3 meters. You need to spray at a distance of more than 1 meter, otherwise there is a risk of inhaling the nasty stuff along with the attacker. After 2-5 seconds the hooligan will feel the gas working on him. The duration of the negative effect is calculated to be 5-7 minutes.

These self-defense means have a low level of injury risk. They do not require special skills to use, are convenient to wear/storage, and are effective against dog attacks. But it is better not to use it in rain, wind or indoors.

Signal weapon

Signal revolvers and pistols, as means of self-defense, can only cause psychological harm. To scare the attacker is the main task of the “signal”. Another effect of a shot is attracting attention. In most cases, this should be enough to repel an attack.

Without a certificate of conformity, the sale of pistols of this class and ammunition for them is impossible. Weapons with a caliber of no more than 6 mm are available for free sale; a license is required.

Owners of starting pistols need to remember that they have a weapon in their hands, even if it is not capable of causing physical injury. It is their civic duty to follow the rules for using and storing these means of self-defense.

Learning to use flare pistols is not difficult. The main thing is to apply them competently, according to the situation (from a psychological and legal point of view).

Blow to blow

The abbreviation fits perfectly into the function of the device for self-defense. Aerosol spraying of small doses of gas using a low-power powder charge. Appearing recently, UDAR has undergone several modernizations (the caliber of ammunition has changed, the device has been adapted for firing with both hands).

The UDAR uses cartridges with gunpowder, but it is not fully a pistol. All mechanisms are placed in a wide body-handle (aka magazine for 5 charges). The IMPACT shot is guaranteed to reach an enemy standing 3 meters away. BAMER - a variation of IMPACT can do the same thing already at 5 meters.

The obvious advantages of the UDAR self-defense tool include:

Different types of cartridges (by size and content of destructive substance);
Small size and ergonomics;
Wide operating temperature range;
Safety margin for 500 shots;
Presence of a fuse.

For active self-defense, it turned out to be a pretty good thing (a cross between a pistol and a spray can) and you don’t need to get a license.

Shock and pain

A stun gun is a means of self-defense, carried in a pocket/bag, purchased without a license and capable of stopping attackers even with sound. Electric shockers can completely immobilize an attacker (human/animal) by causing convulsive muscle contractions. These self-defense weapons are divided by type of use:

The blow is delivered upon contact with the target (any maximally exposed areas of the body are affected);
The shocker hits at a distance (shoots with contacts).

What weapons do not require a permit?

In Russia, according to Federal Law No. 150-FZ “On Weapons” as amended in 2015, you can find weapons without permission:

Gas sprayer;

Stun gun;

Low action pneumatics;

Household knife;

Axe;

Device "Blow";

Spear gun;

A signal revolver that cannot be used as a combat revolver.

Anyone over 18 years of age can purchase.

Frankly speaking, these means can be called a weapon with a large advance. That is why they sell it without any delay, because, strictly speaking, it is harmless. Using these means, you will not only not kill anyone, but you are unlikely to even seriously injure them. If the attacker is not impressed by the sight of the barrel pointed at him, then he will not be afraid of a small metal bullet.

By the way, carry “air balloons” with you on the streets forbidden— you can only use pneumatic guns at home, as well as during training at a shooting range or shooting range.

If you hit a person in the eye with such a “charge”, nothing good will happen. Your actions will be classified as exceeding permissible self-defense(Article 114 of the Criminal Code).

What weapons can be purchased without a license?

Gas canister

A spray can is the simplest weapon for self-defense; it is available in Russian gun stores without permission or a license. To begin with, the psychological effect is zero. Gone are the days when his appearance could scare off an aggressor.

By the way, even if you spray gas, it will not help you much - with watery eyes and partially unfocused vision, the bandit nevertheless does not lose either mobility or strength, and your attempts to defend yourself can only anger him.

Need to remember! Use such weapons not possible in all circumstances. For example, it is strictly forbidden in a small confined space - then you yourself will inhale the “charge” in the company of the attacker. And if you spray in an open space against the wind, you won’t even harm the enemy, only yourself, since the sprayed cloud will fall on you.

Flare gun

A flare gun (rocket launcher) is also considered a weapon for self-defense; you can buy it without permission or a license.

The psychological effect is achieved from a signal pistol; it also does not require permission ( caliber up to 4.5 mm). A more or less good effect is achieved from the Smersh PK-1 model. It is recommended to use it from a distance of up to seven meters.

The gun will not cause serious harm to the attacker, but it is guaranteed to stop him.

The use of this mechanism is justified in all cases where necessary self-defense takes place.

Spear gun

A gun for hunting underwater is, strictly speaking, not a weapon at all, since it is classified as sports equipment and is extremely ineffective for self-defense. But, as you know, the bullet is still stupid, but the bayonet (in our case, the knife) is great.

If these types of weapons seem ineffective to you, then pay attention to traumatic or pneumatic weapons. But... you should get them.

A kitchen knife or pocket knife has a weak blade, so when protecting you should cut rather than stab. Hit the enemy's arms and legs - your own blood will stop even the most experienced of them, and you will have the opportunity to escape.

The most effective weapon for self-defense without a license

A stun gun is the best weapon that does not require a permit.

It is small, compact in size, does not take up much space, and will not cause harm to the owner. It does not arouse suspicion, since it can be disguised, for example, as a mobile phone and will not provoke the attacker to further aggression. Vulnerabilities- neck, arms, groin, back, chest.

In addition, it will really stop the aggressor - and not just “prick” with an electric discharge, but knock it out for about half an hour.

But only if you don’t save when purchasing!

A cheap stun gun will not be particularly sensitive for an attacker, and if it is winter outside and your opponent is wearing thick clothes like a down jacket, he may not even feel that you have used anything against him.

When choosing the desired option, it is better to opt for those where the current strength is greater.

As it becomes clear, it is better not to place much hope on freely sold weapons. At best, it is little more dangerous than a child’s slingshot; at worst, it will play against you or provoke an offender.
