Today we will make a quick sketch pastels and pastel pencils cups and spoons. Let's try to convey two materials in the drawing - ceramics and metal.
As has already become a tradition, we will draw on craft paper, which is “uneven” enough to hold at least some amount of pastel. Of course, you can use special paper for pastels, but crafting is a more economical option and you can practice on it.
- First of all, we will make an initial sketch of the cup - a top view. For this we use pastel chalk.
For now, let's outline the position of the spoon with one line - for this I used a simple pencil.
The drawing at the first stage must be end-to-end in order to accurately understand the position of things in space and convey this as accurately as possible in the drawing. For example, the edge of the spoon should touch the bottom of the cup and only the edge of the spoon should be visible.Draw a preliminary sketch of the cup.
- Then we draw the shape of the spoon. It will be easier to convey its position if you pay attention to the angles formed by the intersection of the spoon and the cup.
Draw the spoon.
- When the sketch is ready, we begin to apply pastels. First, we do this with broad strokes/strokes of pastel chalk.
For the cup we use pink, yellow-orange, light coral colors. Apply some cool tones to the outside of the cup.
We paint the spoon with gray, white and ocher - for reflection in the metal from the cup. We clearly outline the edges of the spoon in some places with a gray pastel pencil.
Draw a picture on the spoon.
For shadows we use cool tones - indigo, gray and add warm touches here and there. The shadow on the handle emphasizes the shape of the handle itself and lies quite sharply.
Use white to add highlights on the handle and cup.
Fill the drawing with color and add shadows.
- Add contrast and clarity to the picture. Don't forget about the shadow on inner surface cups from a spoon. The shadow follows the shape of the cup. Add a spoonful of glare and a reflex - a warm reflection orange color from the cup.
Well, at the end we will draw a shadow under the cup on the surface of the table.For clear, thin lines, we use finely sharpened pastel pencils, and to fill large areas with color, we use crayons.
Please note that in this sketch we hardly shaded the strokes, but simply layered them on top of each other and thereby mixed the colors in the process.

4. Clarify the general outline of the mug
Now let’s clarify a little the neck and the basic shape of the mug along with the handle. The walls of the cup have a certain thickness and therefore you need to draw an additional outline inside the neck of the mug. Having discovered a discrepancy in the symmetry of the sides, you can correct it, for example, in the same way as I did. Complete the entire drawing of the cup handle.
5. Cup drawing, finishing touches
Remove any extra contour lines and double-check that you have drawn everything correctly before moving on to toning the mug with a simple pencil.
6. Using shadows we will make the cup voluminous
Always, before applying shadows with a simple pencil on an object in a drawing, imagine from which side the light will fall. In places further away from the light source, the shadows will be “thicker” and vice versa. Pay attention to the neck of the mug. Draw a vertical line down the center of the sheet. The main part of the cup is symmetrical about the vertical axis, and this must be taken into account. Set aside an axial segment equal to the height. Mark its beginning and end with dots.
Draw 2 horizontal lines through the marked points. Set aside pieces equal to the largest and smallest widths of the cup. The widest place in a simple-shaped cup is the top, the narrowest is the bottom. The midpoints of both segments should be at the intersection of the axial line and the horizontal lines.
Draw ovals through the end points of each horizontal segment. The widest part of one and the other oval falls on the center line. The line of the upper oval is the same thickness everywhere. At the bottom, circle brighter the part that is closest to the bottom edge of the sheet. The second half of the bottom will not be visible.
Connect the points with which you marked the width of the upper and lower parts in pairs with a line repeating the line of the side surface of the cup. If you don't remember exactly how it goes, draw it in the air again and repeat the movement on paper.
Trace a pen in the air. Please note that it must be two parallel curved lines. Repeat the movement on the paper in the same direction in which you drew it in the air. Draw the outer line of the handle first, and then the inner one.
Give the cup shape. First apply an even, light coat of paint over outer surface cups. Paint the top oval with an even layer of the same paint, but in a cooler shade. For example, paint the outer part with white paint with the addition of yellow or pink, and for the inner part add blue or greenish white paint. Apply a thicker layer to the outer part.
