According to medical experts, the criminal used various murder weapons: an ax, a knife, an awl, a screwdriver, a noose, and in some episodes using several different weapons in a row. For example, he inflicted multiple blows to the head of one of the victims with a metal object, 8 stab wounds with a screwdriver, as well as stab wounds to the face and neck. In nine cases, the victim's death occurred from multiple blows from an ax.

Most of the victims were between 19 and 28 years old at the time of the murders. One victim was fifteen, four others were between 35 and 40 years old. All women were of average height (155-170 cm) and tended to be overweight. All but one were moderately or heavily intoxicated at the time of the murder and had been raped before their death. The only victim, who was sober at the time of the attack, was not raped. The criminal strangled her with a scarf and stabbed her already dead body with a knife. Popkov burned one of the victims after the murder. Another had his heart cut out.

The killer left the victims in the vicinity of Angarsk, in forests adjacent to country roads leading from major highways (Siberian Highway, Krasnoyarsk-Irkutsk bypass highway). 26 women were dead at the time of discovery, three more were mortally wounded and died in the hospital.

Investigation
The similarity of the type of victim and the behavior of the victims at the time of the murder led the investigation to the conclusion that the murders were committed by one person. In 1998, a rumor appeared in Angarsk about a maniac operating in the city, and in December of this year an investigative and operational group was formed, consisting of employees of the prosecutor’s office, the Internal Affairs Directorate and the Regional Directorate for Organized Crime and Organized Crime. During the investigation, the victim identified the senior sergeant of the Angarsk police department. The case, however, remained unsolved. Regarding this episode, Kitaev in his conclusion pointed to the lack of a forensic medical examination of the victim and the formality of checking the alibi of the sergeant, who led a dissolute lifestyle and infected his cohabitant with syphilis.
In March 2001, investigator Nikolai Kitaev was dismissed from the authorities due to the disbandment of regional transport prosecutors' offices.

Popkov's arrest, investigation and trial.
In 2012, the previously closed, allegedly hopeless, criminal case was reopened by the Investigative Committee. Already in March 2012, the results of a molecular genetic examination of traces of the 2003 rape made it possible to identify the culprit, who turned out to be Mikhail Popkov, who had participated in the previous investigation. On June 23 of the same year, Popkov, when he was trying to drive a newly purchased car from Vladivostok, was arrested on suspicion of rape and murder. three women committed in March, June and December 1997. The suspect surrendered without resistance and already at the police department confessed to dozens of murders. He also admitted that he stopped killing because of impotence, which he received as a result of an advanced venereal disease.

In August 2012, information appeared in the media that the defendant tried to hang himself in a pretrial detention cell. Soon this information was refuted by FSIN employees.

On October 31, 2013, Popkov was charged with 22 murders and two attempted murders. In May 2014, the case went to trial. The materials of the criminal case amounted to 195 volumes. After being discharged, at least 15 girls and women aged from 11 to 40 years died in the Spesivtsevs’ apartment from February to September 1996. According to the court, some victims were brought to the maniac by their mother. This happened, in particular, with the last three girls.

Spesivtsev killed first one girl, then the second. He forced the last girl who was alive to dismember the bodies and eat soup from the meat of his own girlfriend and ate it himself.

The Spesivtsev family was caught by accident. During a routine inspection, a team of plumbers knocked on the cannibal's apartment. Since he did not open the door, they broke down and discovered the bodies. According to information as of 2015, Alexander Spesivtsev continues treatment in the Volgograd psychiatric hospital.

A cannibal from Tatarstan killed and ate at least seven girls and women along with his accomplices Madina Shakirova and Anatoly Nikitin in 1986.

Lidiya Fedorova was searched for three months until she contacted the Vasilievsky police department of the Zelenodolsk district local resident Gennady Uglov. The trial of the cannibals lasted about a month. As a result, Nikitin and Shakirova were each sentenced to 15 years in a maximum security colony (they were released in 2001). Sukletin was sentenced to death, and on July 29, 1987, the sentence was carried out.
