How to take a pencil style photo. How to make a photo look like it was drawn using PhotoShop

Detailed lesson on turning an ordinary photograph into a hyper-realistic painting in just a couple of minutes.

Some talented artists They can paint using the hyperrealism technique, but we mere mortals can only dream about it. Fortunately there is Adobe Photoshop, where you can create various interesting effects and imitate hand-drawn styles. We found a great tutorial by Chris Spooner, designer and founder of Blog Spoon Graphics. He shows how, in just a couple of minutes, you can turn a simple portrait photo into a real work of art with detailed strokes and highlights.

Of course, in Chris’s example, everything looks truly masterpiece, but in Photoshop a lot depends on the source photo, and the effects that work great with one photo are not always suitable for another. Therefore, we decided to take a portrait of a slightly different quality and try to do all the same manipulations in the hope of getting something similar.

1. So, open your chosen photo in Photoshop and add a curves adjustment layer. We need to darken the shadows a little and brighten the highlights to give the photo more contrast.

2. Press Ctrl+J to duplicate the background layer twice. Then add the High Pass effect from the filter menu to the top duplicate.

3. Adjust the High Pass filter radius within 1-3 px. This will be enough to create the desired effect. A larger radius may result in unwanted noise and ghosting.

4. Change the blending mode of the High Pass filter layer from normal to Linear Light to sharpen the photo. Increased sharpness ensures precise strokes, especially on hair.

5. Now merge the High Pass layer with the duplicate Background layer below to consolidate the effect. This can be done using the MergeVisible command from the layers menu. Just to start, leave visible only those two layers that you are going to merge. After that, go to Filter > Stylize > Diffuse.

6. Change the blur mode to Anisotropic - this is the key point that actually creates this magic effect drawing.

7. If you look closely at the result, you will notice unsightly seams that scatter and repeat. But there is a way to solve this problem.

8. Go to Image > Image Rotation > 90° CW to rotate the image and press Ctrl+F (Cmd+F) to add the diffuse filter again.

9. Rotate the image again, and apply the diffuse filter again. Repeat this step a third time to return the photo to its correct position.

10. The diffuse filter perfectly imitates a brush, but at the same time blurs the image a little. Go to Filter > Sharpen > Smart Sharpen to add clarity. Set the Threshold value around 100, but use a small radius so as not to overdo it.

11. The result already looks impressive, but you can make it even more interesting. Select Surface Blur from the Filter > Blur menu and set the Radius to around 20 and the Threshold to around 15 (as you can see, a Radius of 40 will blur the image a lot). This will create flat areas and give the photo an even more painted look.

12. Well, that's it, our Santa has turned from a photograph into a hyper-realistic painting. From a distance, you might think that this is still a photograph, but if you look closely, you will notice numerous strokes and transitions characteristic of painting.

We hope you enjoyed this tutorial as much as we did - a couple of simple manipulations to achieve a stylish effect. This may be useful to you for the contacts section on the site, for example, when you need to combine different photos with something common in order to achieve harmony.

Let's look at how you can make a drawing from a photo using image editors or mobile converters.

Follow the instructions:

1 Open the desired photo in Photoshop and add a new hue and saturation layer. To do this, find the style display panel in the program window and click on the tab "Adjustments";

2 Click on the “Hue” icon shown in the figure below(hue-saturation);

3 A new layer will appear in the layers tab "Hue-Saturation". This layer is a correction layer and allows you to change the color palette and structure of the photo;

4 Click on new layer. A window for setting its parameters will appear. In the Saturation field, set value "-100". This way you will reduce the saturation of the image;

5 Now the picture will become black and white. Next you need to select the background layer. Click on it in the window Layers;

6 The next step is to duplicate the existing background layer. In the program header, click on the Layer tab. In the drop-down list, click on “New Layer” - “Layer via Copy”;

7 As a result, in the layers display panel a copy of the background will appear;

As a result, the picture should be displayed as a negative.

9 Let's change the layer blend type. Select the copy of the background layer and activate the Color Dodge mode. This is necessary to lighten the base. The picture will turn white with a few dark areas showing;

10 Now we need to make a smart object from the resulting layer. Click on the duplicate background and then click on the button "Layer Menu";

11 In the dropdown list, convert the element to "Smart Object". After this, an icon will appear near the layer preview, which indicates that a smart label has been assigned to the object.

12 To apply a filter, click on the “Filter” menu. Next, go to the tab "Blur" and select "Gaussian Blur"" In the window that opens, set the Radius to 12.0 pixels. Save the settings;

The outline of a silhouette will appear in the photo and the image will become exactly the same as the drawing we are familiar with.

If you want to add color to the picture, in the layer settings window, set the “Color” mode. As a result, the layer will automatically take on the color scheme of the original image.

EditorGIMP

GIMP- This is one of the most popular alternatives. In terms of functionality and processing capabilities, GIMP is not inferior to professional paid applications.

Photo processing can be done in any version of the program.

The image conversion process itself is simple and will take no more than 5 minutes.

To begin, open the original image in the program and desaturate it. Click on the "Color" menu tab and select "Desaturate".

Now copy the background layer and now work exclusively with the copy.

In case of incorrect settings or to return an action, you can always return to the original version of the layer.

Open the “Filter” menu tab and click on "Edge Select"- "Edge".

In the window that opens, configure the following settings:

  • The basis of shades of gray is “Lightness”;
  • Algorithm – “Laplace”;
  • Value – “2.0”;
  • Action – “Blur”.

Save your settings. As a result, the edges of the picture will take on the outline of the picture.

All that remains is to invert the image to obtain a realistic art design.

Click on the “Color” tab in the program header and select “Invert”. Result of the action:

StandardPaint. NET

PAINT.NET is a standard graphics editor for Windows.

The convenience of working with this desktop program is that you do not need to install or configure it.

Everything is ready to go, and thanks to the simple functionality, even an inexperienced user can process a photo and turn it into a drawing.

A hand-drawn image from any photo.

Photos “Before” and “After” processing:

There are many things people try to surprise each other by posting photos, for example, on Instagram: sunset at sea, strange animals close up, cute couples, etc. But one of the most big problems user social networks- keeping the entire account in one style.

To solve this “problem”, there are many applications or sites on the Internet. Your photographs can easily be turned into paintings painted in watercolor, oil, acrylic, pencil and in absolutely any style - be it portraits of Van Gogh or masterpieces of Chagall.

Quite often people take the simple route and turn photographs into pencil sketches, without using fancy programs like Photoshop. A special website found in a search engine can help you make your photo a wonderful pencil drawing.

How to make a pencil drawing from a photo

Turning a photo into a pencil drawing is quite easy - you just need to find a web resource that will meet your requirements. Maybe you just need to edit a photo to put it on your personal blog, or maybe you need to create a whole collage in a frame, in the same style.

In this article we will consider two options for solving this problem, using such resources as Pho.to and PhotoFunia.

Option 1: Pho.to

The proposed site contains quite extensive functionality and at the same time you can work directly in the browser without purchasing paid subscriptions and without downloading additional software. "Photo effects", the section you need makes it possible to automatically select the effect that suits the photo. This section, in turn, has subcategories - the Pho.to website has many options for photo processing. The desired photo effect, obviously, is in the subcategory "Art".

This service is good because your processed photo is converted to JPG format and is of high quality. The site presents many additional photo effects with several variations. For example, there are several options for the pencil drawing effect.

Option 2: PhotoFunia

This online resource does not process your photos, but rather pastes them in and stylizes them to suit the given environment. There's a whole category of effects that can be applied to pictures - and almost all of them place your photo on a specific third-party object.
Again, PhotoFunia provides the ability to “turn” your photo into a painting, even in multiple versions.

PhotoMania is a very popular service that processes huge amount images every day. And with such a load, delays during processing are minimal.

The site presents large number effects that will turn ordinary photographs into extraordinary shots.

The services discussed in this article allow you to creatively process a photo. You can spend a few seconds to get masterpieces, while using professional services or utilities would require much more effort and time.

    Also use Photoshop. There are appropriate filters that make the photo look like it was painted, and there are also several options for portraits, even watercolor. And it’s easy to do, although there are also video tutorials for this.

    there are special editors, for example Olympus Master, there are functions for drawing with watercolors, oil paints, pencil only need to adjust more real option by hand

    If the question concerns creating a drawn picture from a photo in the Photoshop editor, then I offer the following video selection (excluding the videos of those who have already answered):

    Ate this question involves creating a drawn portrait using third-party programs (this method is especially good for those who do not know how to use Photoshop), then here’s a different plot (and there’s even online programs, where you can make a hand-drawn portrait or still life from a photo - a video about just such a program):

    There is also this option (using CorelDRAW)

    Well, I like to create a similar effect automatically on the website - http://www.imgonline.com.ua/cartoon-picture.php (there it is called cartoon)

    Even with the default settings it comes out very well!

  • Making a drawing from a photograph is very simple.

    There are several ways to give a photograph the appearance of a pencil drawing or stylize any image to look like a picture drawn in watercolor, gouache, oil, or using other materials.

    If the quality and realism of the image are not particularly important to you, but you just need to do it quickly, you can easily get by with online image editors, of which there are plenty on the Internet, for example these: PhotoFunia , Photo Pencil Sketch or on this site Free online services from Pho.to. There are many more similar ones, but they all have one significant drawback - low quality image processing, and the choice of stylization effects is very small and the conversion tools cannot be customized. That’s why I don’t use online services; it’s monotonous, not of high quality and not interesting. Elements of one's own creativity are completely absent.

    The second method is also very simple, but it gives you a chance to add some individual, original shades to each new image. This is a method using small special programs and applications. There are also a lot of such programs, from very simple ones, in which the quality is not much superior to online editors, to quite professional ones. From very simple programs I can recommend FotoSketcher And Dynamic Auto-Painter.

    In the program FotoSketcher It’s very simple to work with, there are few settings and by changing them you can achieve quite realistic results.

    In the program Dynamic Auto-Painter the work is even simpler, but more interesting, the entire process of changing the picture can be observed in real time and stopped when you are satisfied with the result, there are quite a lot of profiles in it, under various styles painting. If you install additional programs for screen recording and conversion, you can also make animated GIFs, for example this one:

    Another very good and powerful program, professional level - AKVIS Sketch. This program is not difficult to use, but its capabilities in stylizing images as a drawing are comparable to those of Photoshop A. This program can also work as a plugin for many graphics editors. Understand the tools and settings of the program AKVIS Sketch very easy, but if you still have difficulties, look at the office. developer's website, there are a lot of clear ones there reference materials and lessons.

    From the same series and a program that is designed to simulate different artistic styles. Using programs AKVIS Sketch And AKVIS ArtWork You can make very realistic photo stylizations in a variety of artistic styles in a few minutes.

    And of course the most best quality in the processing of raster images can be obtained in a graphic editor of all times and peoples - in Photoshop e ( Adobe Photoshop). I'm using the version Adobe Photoshop CS6 13.0 Extended but earlier versions will allow you to achieve very high quality and realism of images.

    It is very difficult to master all of Photoshop on your own, but you can learn how to use some functions and filters quite quickly. Watch these video tutorials, exactly on your question and you won’t have any problems to make a drawing from a photo.

  • In order to change a real photo to a hand-drawn one, you just need a photo editor.

    I personally always use this Site.

    Here you can change all your photos to pictures, that is, on this site you can turn a Photo into a drawn portrait.

    There are many ways how to give a photograph the effect of a painting. The most common and probably the most the easy way which I know is using the program Dynamic Auto-Painter. This program will automatically do everything necessary to give your photos the appearance of pencil drawing.

    You can do everything manually yourself by mastering Photoshop. But it's a little long and requires some effort.

    Turn a photo into a painted portrait or turn a digital image into a painted one different styles a painting or drawing can be done in several ways:

    • use graphic editors, special programs that need to be installed on your computer; these programs are used for image editing, including turning a photo into a drawing with watercolors, paints, or pencil
    • take advantage graphic editors online
    • use programs that are used to transfer photographs from a camera to a computer's hard drive; they can also be used to edit images and turn a photograph into a drawing.
  • You can do without Photoshop; there are a lot of free photo editors and photo templates on the Internet into which you simply upload a photo, and at the end it is displayed with the effect you need.

    One of them is http://funny.pho.to/ru/ (but there are a lot of them)

    The portrait effect will look something like this (but this is not the only portrait template, there are better ones)

    There are also a bunch of templates for postcards, but of course you need to make your own exclusive one in Photoshop

    Today this is no longer a difficult task, because there are many programs for turning an ordinary photograph into a painted portrait. You can use Photoshop, FotoSketcher, Paint, Dynamic Auto-Painter. You can download these programs for free from the Internet.

    It's very simple:

    Photoshop has special filters that will make your photo not only drawn, but also embroidered, wrinkled, and whatever you want :)

    The main thing is that you have Photoshop installed, and it’s easy to understand

    Hi all! Nowadays, in order to find the answer to our questions, you just need to go to the Internet. And to answer the question that worries you, there are a lot of different and most importantly free photo editors, with the help of them you can easily learn how to turn photographs into painted portraits! I myself often I use this site and I don’t have any problems. With the help of this site, you can turn your and other photographs into a painted portrait!

    Often, users want to learn how to make a drawing from a photo so that they can later print the photo and store it as a drawing.

    Let's consider the most effective ways.

    First, let's look at several popular services with which you can quickly create a drawing effect on a photo without installing additional software to the computer.

    Photo Phunia service

    On this site, users can take advantage of an automatic effect that transforms an ordinary picture into a drawing.

    You can also select the background texture of the source file: colored, white or “special”.

    To get started, select the file on your PC. To do this, click on the Browse button on the website.

    Then determine the color scheme of the image (black and white or color).

    Click on the texture shape you want to output and click on the "Create" button to begin the file conversion process.

    In a few seconds, a direct link to download the image from the site will be generated.

    Croper service

    The next popular site for creating a drawing from an ordinary picture is Croper. This online photo editor allows you to apply additional effects to your photos.

    With its help, you can create a unique image without losing quality.

    One of the most popular features of this site is the pencil drawing feature.

    The file is transformed by creating darker tones of the image, then strokes are gradually applied to the layers of the image, which, in turn, make a sketch from the image.

    The editor interface is very simple. Upload the file to the site by clicking on the appropriate button.

    The picture will open in a new window on the site. After that, find the main menu tabs - they are located at the top of the site.

    Click in turn on “Operations” - “Effects” - “Pencil”.

    At the top of the page, select the stroke length settings and tilt level.

    Then click on the Apply button to start the image conversion process.

    This will take no more than one minute. If necessary, you can adjust the contrast of the final drawing.

    The result of Croper's work is shown in the figure below.

    Creating a drawing in Adobe Photoshop

    With help, you can also create a pencil drawing from an ordinary picture.

    Using the built-in functions of the program, you can achieve better display of all strokes and the final picture will look natural.

    The effect of the drawing will be very clearly visible if you print it on a printer. For greater effect, you can use white or craft paper.

    All the steps below are done in Photoshop program CS6. The functions used are available in earlier and all new versions of the application.

    We will use a regular scanned photo.

    We recommend not using small pictures when working in Photoshop, because after applying the “picture” effect, some of the pixels may be blurred, which will degrade the quality of the final small image.

    First we need to copy the original image.

    To do this, open the image in the program, wait for the toolbar to load and press the F7 button. Then click on the button combination Ctrl - J.

    This will create a duplicate layer.

    Read also:

    To do this, click on the Image item (main menu of the program). Click on “Correction” – “Inversion”.

    Also, to apply desaturation to a layer, just press the Ctrl and I keys simultaneously.

    As a result of decolorization, we will get a negative image, and not its black and white version. All light areas of the photo will become dark, and all dark areas will become light.

    In the Layers panel, the resulting negative will be displayed as a second copy of the original layer. Next, let's change the layer's display mode.

    Click on layer 2 and in the “Mode” line open the drop-down list. Click on "Background Lightening".

    After changing the mode, the project canvas will become completely or partially white. On the main menu bar, click “Filter” - “Blur”.

    From the list provided, select “Gaussian Blur.” In the window that opens, adjust the slider to create the blur level.

    The higher the value of this indicator, the lighter the picture becomes, taking on the outline of a drawn one.

    Important! Don't go overboard with the blur filter, otherwise the photo may become too light and the pencil effect will be lost. The optimal blur value is 12.5 – 13 pixels.

    This decolorization method allows you to achieve maximum clarity of the strokes of the picture, pixels are not lost, and the resolution of the picture is maintained.

    As you can see, the picture has acquired the outline of a pencil, but has not become too light.

    Go to the layers window and select the very first layer, as shown in the picture below. Then move the pointer to the layer name and wait for the context menu to appear.

    In it, click on the “Merge Visible Layers” item. Hold down the Alt button and use the pointer to select all three layers that you want to merge.

    Select the topmost layer (layer 1). You need to change its display mode to “Multiplication”. This allows you to darken each line of the sketch, giving the sketch more naturalness.

    The lines should not be too dark. If this happens, adjust the Opacity parameter to 50%.

    It is necessary that the color of a “simple” pencil be preserved.

    You can finish the job here. As a result, we get a black and white sketch of the original photograph.

    If you want to add some color to your sketch, create a copy of the background layer by pressing Ctrl - J .

    Now we only need to change the display color parameters of the duplicated layer.

    Select the “Color” mode and in the Transparency line set the value to 65%, as shown in the figure above.

    The final result of converting the image to a thumbnail will look like this:

    Creating a drawing from an ordinary photo in Photoshop will take you no more than 10 minutes, even if you are not an advanced user.

    This method allows you to achieve the highest quality effect of a pencil-drawn picture.
