Actually, oh artistic value anime can be discussed for a long time. We can talk even longer about which anime should be considered the best. An inspired audience will remember the works of Hayao Miyazaki. Search lovers deep meaning will begin to enthusiastically tell you about Eva and Ergo Proxy. People will simply talk about the Notebook or the Geass Code. Some will rely on the drama, some will complain about the plot, others will pray for undercurrents that are open only to the gaze of a connoisseur, the latter will remember the visual component. I have to agree with many opinions. However, when the roar of exclamation subsides, I will ask connoisseurs of the genre not to forget that there must be one more component in anime - drive.
“You pigs in human clothes!”
You know, I really love TTGL, so I was incredibly happy when I learned that a new series had been released about the very people who gave the world this amazing picture. What was I waiting for? Hurricane action, cheerful banter, charismatic heroes, an interesting, although not particularly intricate plot, knocking out the stingy male tears of drama and kilotons of selected pathos that makes every string of the soul shake. What did I get? At first glance, almost the same, but the “devil” is always in the details
In general, after watching TTGL, one of the full-length films based on it and Kill la Kill`a, I got the impression that in GAINAX“There was a certain person who controlled the creative process of the team. Seriously, there was definitely someone there who hit the creators on the wrist with a ruler when their imagination got too wild: he cut out really crazy scenes, limited the amount of fan service (with varying degrees of success), and didn’t let them go into themselves and create something , beyond the scope of the plot. When gluing together feature films, this person did not monitor the work. He was not in the new studio at all. Of course, this paragraph is a metaphor, but this does not change the fact that in Kill la Kill the creators were able to realize all their wildest fantasies from those that censorship allows.
Of course, there are clear advantages to this. I'm glad that Triggers spent a little more time developing characters than in TTGL, and thanks to this they created a number of truly colorful heroes. Of course, first of all I would like to highlight Kiryuin Satsuki, which emitted not only tons of high-grade pathos, but also GAINAX’s signature “banter over pathos.” Her henchmen were not far behind: the Elite Four Stud. The council pleased us with bright, although perhaps not the most original, characters: a sort of “samurai devoted to his master,” who makes a sacrifice so as not to lose honor; a bespectacled hacker, passionate about collecting absolutely any information; a cheerful loli-like girl, with the smallest body size, but, at the same time, the largest attacks; and, of course, a brutal muscleman, for whom the main thing is not to retreat, lashing himself with whips to become stronger (a sort of comedic version Rao). True, with the transition to the “light side”, they became pretty boring, turning into ordinary assistants to the GG.
The main villains also turned out to be quite bright, even despite the fact that their motivation is absolutely not explained by the authors. Even though the elder Kiryuin is a completely flat and banal character, her crazy plans and stupid pathos only emphasize the overall atmosphere of the series. It turned out much better, in my opinion Harime Nui: As charismatic as she is crazy, she expresses endless contempt for those around her with her entire behavior. Thanks to her feigned frivolity, constant smile and ability to derive pleasure from the suffering of others, this character became perhaps the most hated in the eyes of fans.
But in my opinion, there is nothing special about the main character. Unlike Simone, who developed and grew spiritually throughout the series, Ryuko is practically static, and her rare and short-lived mental torments look feigned and weak. The other main character can be considered her living school uniform named Senketsu, who accompanies Matoi throughout the story. For a talking robe, he's quite charismatic, though final scene with his participation it turned out to be crumpled and unnecessary from the point of view of dramaturgy.
I really enjoyed the action. Although, compared to TTGL, it lacks epicness, it has become more dynamic and diverse. Each of the characters has their own unique abilities, often very funny and silly. Something is constantly happening on the screen, someone is running somewhere, everything explodes, hundreds of people fly into the air from shock waves caused by the collision of the heroines’ pathos. It all looks very cool and crazy.
But there is also dark side author's imagination. First of all, there is an incredible amount of fan service in the anime. And I’m talking about that very erotic fan service: just look at the scenes of transformation of the main characters, which migrated here straight from Sailor Moon. Secondly, it is felt that Imaishi and Nakashima love their previous creation very much, therefore, without hesitation, they almost completely quote not only some of its scenes, but even entire plot moves. Thirdly, they were so deep in the jungle of their consciousness that they forgot to provide the picture with at least some coherent message to the viewer. If Gurren Lagann was talking about why people need to dream and strive for something, and why you shouldn’t let others build ceilings over your head, then the central idea here is that people’s dependence on material wealth, symbolized by clothing .
However, the first half suited me almost completely

The second unexpectedly turned out to be significantly weaker. For some reason, the creators tried to make it seem harsh, but what was happening remained just as trashy. The drive somehow diminished, the characters became boring, and there was even less logic. Well, you must agree, how can you perceive the plot when, as the core of the story, they are telling you outright nonsense in all seriousness?
The air of seriousness made us look at the combat unit differently. For example, the logic of ups became unclear to me main character: It is often not explained, just as the nature of most abilities, especially illusions and clones, is not explained. And the closer to the end, the stronger the sounds of the pianos become.
Again, it unexpectedly turns out that the content of the series is rather empty, and if it carries certain thoughts, then these thoughts are revealed in a rather non-obvious way. Just look at Ryuko’s pathetic speech at the end, containing such weighty statements as “ Clothes are not people, but people are not clothes" or " We are neither clothes nor people, but we are both clothes and people at the same time."What are you talking about?
But despite all of the above, I think Kill la Kill is very good anime. It's fun and cool story in the spirit of TTGL, which looks almost in one go and is perfect for those who just want to relax and get positive emotions from viewing. Although, personally, I would not recommend it to people who are just starting to watch Japanese animation, because they have not yet developed immunity to the “animeness” of which is through the roof here.

In the age of science, people know about ghouls, but as they say, they are used to it. The authorities do not consider cannibals a threat; moreover, they view them as an ideal basis for creating super-soldiers. Experiments have been going on for a long time...
The main character Ken Kaneki faces a painful search for a new path, because he realized that people and ghouls are similar: it’s just that some literally eat each other, others figuratively. The story tells of a young man named Saitama, who lives in a world ironically similar to ours. He is 25, bald and handsome, and, moreover, so strong that with one blow he can annihilate all dangers to humanity. He is looking for himself in a difficult way life path, simultaneously handing out slaps to monsters and villains.
Now you have to play the game. What kind of game it will be will be decided by roulette. The bet in the game will be your life. After death, people who died at the same time go to Queen Decim, where they have to play a game. But in fact, what is happening to them here is the Heavenly Judgment.
Who created Gurren Lagann? Gainax. Who created Kill la Kill? Trigger. Who created Trigger? Coming from Gainax. What everyone (or just the majority) expected from new job studios? The same masterpiece. What did you get? But this is what we’ll figure out now.

Okay, I’ll answer for you - this is plot cliché No. 2 “Enemies burned down my home.” What is she doing in an anime that aims to be a masterpiece? The same as in TTGL - it makes fun of it. Soon many more situations seen hundreds of times will appear, but they will be resolved in their own way, fun and sometimes original. In general, it’s a shame to complain; sometimes the humor and references are good.
Now let's talk about the heroes. And paradoxically, it is mainly those who fight “on the side of evil” who evoke sympathy. Here, for example. Protagonist and antagonists. Ryuko is a standard Shonen super-overcoming-all-defending, brainless fighter. I've already seen hundreds of these, these won't surprise me. Satsky is another matter. The epitome of greatness. Be strict with yourself and others. Beauty at last! Or Ragyo. Not only that theme song- the best in the series, and her majesty outshines (overshadows?) even Satsky! And even though she later slides into an ordinary villain, she still accepts even the events of the last episode (appreciate how I avoided a spoiler!) with dignity. Or let’s take the assistants of the main characters. Mako and Nudist Sensei are purely humorous characters. Another thing is the Hannoji Academy Four. You can write a couple of paragraphs about each of them, but you just have to see them. Whoever sees it will immediately submit. My favorites are of course Nonon and Gamagori. In general, the “enemies” turned out better than the “friends”. Sad? Not in real life, I’m all for it.
I would also like to mention tons of fan service. If at the beginning it was funny, but in the end these nakednesses got boring. Although it's beautifully drawn, yes.
At this point we could end the review, give it 9/10 and go have some tea. BUT! Re-read the first paragraph. Next there will be a comparison with TTGL, so it’s better not to read for the impressionable.
Still, it doesn’t reach Gurren. There was anime for adults, here - for children (not in appearance, but in content). There was an epic, there was a circus. There they laughed, knowing that they were going to their death, but here... Just like that. I understand that KlK is meant to make fun of cliches, but TTGL did this too. Everything is just done too clumsily here. The most unfortunate thing is that individual elements work the same way. The jokes are funny, there are thrills, the characters are colorful, the plot is more or less justified, the picture is top notch. But... The transitions from jokes to seriousness and back are too abrupt, the characters lack a beautiful death, the plot hangs between seriousness and nonsense, and there are not even signature phrases to go down in history. For almost every plus there is a minus that could have been avoided...
General conclusion: as always, inflated expectations are to blame for everything. Regardless of Gurren, it turned out to be a pretty good action movie. With caution - NOT DONE. They can do better. The viewer wants better. But alas, we only got 8/10 (7/10 + Blumenkranz).
