Paid access to advanced features is one of the most popular monetization principles in App Store. Developers do not need to support two versions simultaneously. The basic functionality of the program is available to users for free, and advanced functions are available by subscription. Since new applications are constantly being released, over time, a previous purchase may become irrelevant. The user can choose another option that better suits his tasks or a cheaper option. In order not to waste money needlessly, you need to know how to cancel a subscription to a paid program on your iPhone.
App Store rules allow the user to cancel any previously purchased subscription. In this case, unlike a one-time purchase, no refunds are made for the paid period. For example, you purchased a monthly access on the 1st, and on the 15th you decided that there is no need to use the advanced functionality of the installed software. If you cancel it, you will still be using the full version until the end of the month.
iPhone
You can both subscribe and cancel your purchased subscription directly on your smartphone.
- Open the settings and look for the section marked in the screenshot. It concentrates the settings for managing the App and iTunes Store stores.
- At the top of the screen there is a hyperlink with your Apple ID. Click on it to access the parameters. On iPhone 4 and 5, you will have to enter a password to do this. On newer models such as the SE, 6, 7 or 8, you can use the Touch ID fingerprint scanner instead. The most advanced iPhone X uses a recognition system to gain access to basic settings Face ID. Based on available leaks, it can be assumed that all 2018 Apple smartphones will be equipped with it, including the much-anticipated CE 2.
- Having confirmed the right to access the protected section on iOS 10 or 11, we will see a pop-up menu. The top item is for changing your Apple ID account settings.
- We are looking for the section indicated by the frame in the screenshot.
- All paid services that are used with this account are collected here. Select from the list the one you want to unsubscribe from.

- The item marked with a frame will open the protected area of iOS in which subscription management is located.
Apple Music
Many iPhone owners listen to music using the Apple Music streaming service. The company provides its users with a trial period of three months, after which they plan to switch to one of the paid options.
- You can check the current status of the service directly in the application of the same name. Open the personalized “For You” area. Click on the stylized user icon.
- Once in the parameters block, we go down to the bottom of the screen. The item marked in the screenshot will take us to the extended access control menu discussed above.
iTunes
Canceling the use of a service paid for in the App Store can be done from any computer on which iTunes is installed.
- Open the program by selecting the “Store” tab in the control area. On the right side of the window we find the “Account” item.
- We log in to our Apple ID, confirming the right to use it with a password.
- We go down to the very end of the list of parameters. In the “Settings” block we see a framed item with the number of paid services used in the account. Opposite it, an arrow indicates a hyperlink to the management section.
- The menu is almost identical to that reviewed on iOS. Opposite each application there is a link labeled “Change”.
- Having selected a program that is no longer relevant to us, click the button indicated in the screenshot.
App Store
Mac owners can find functionality similar to iTunes in the App Store app.
- On home page, under the icons of the most popular programs there is a “Quick Links” area. Click on the “Account” item.
- The menu that opens has a slightly different structure than in iTunes. The link we need to paid services is located in the “Management” block.

About subscriptions. Basic information
There are 3 main monetization models in Apple stores (App Store, iTunes Store):
- paid application
- free-2-play - shareware application with in-app purchases
- subscriptions
The first two models are often combined. The third usually stands apart.
Subscriptions- this is a model of payment for some services, when a certain amount of money is withdrawn from the user monthly, once every six months, once a year or one-time (!).
What subscriptions can you find when using Apple equipment:
- Subscriptions to Apple Music, iCloud, iTunes Match
- Subscriptions to newspapers and magazines
- Subscriptions to online services such as HBO NOW, Spotify, Netflix, Pandora, Hulu, etc.
- Subscriptions within App Store applications (usually services)
There are two types of subscriptions:
- Non-renewable subscriptions. These could be season tickets to watch some competitions or simply some kind of service that is valid for a strictly defined time. Once completed, you must renew your subscription manually.
- Automatically renewable. That is, after a certain time, if there are enough funds in the user’s account, then the money for the next period is automatically debited from it.
Please remember that auto-renewal occurs several hours before the next pay period. Apple's website says about 8 hours, some apps say 24 hours. That is, it is better to cancel subscriptions at least 24 hours in advance to avoid unnecessary charges.
How to disable/change subscription in iOS?
Settings->iTunes Store and App Store.
Click on your Apple ID. After this, you will need to sign in using Touch ID or password. In the new window you need to find the section Subscriptions and press Manage.
A list of all your subscriptions (if there is more than one) will appear. At the same time, it is immediately visible in the list active subscription or expired.
Select a subscription. Using the available options you can:
- change tariff plan: for example, instead of a monthly subscription, choose an annual one or vice versa
- disable auto-renewal. Then, after the paid period, the subscription is deactivated
How to disable/change a subscription in iTunes?
Useful to know in case the iPad/iPhone is sold, for example. Or it broke. After all, the subscriptions themselves are not canceled in this case and the money will continue to be debited from your card.
Open iTunes. If you're not signed in, sign in with your Apple ID.
From the menu, select Account->View. A window will appear in which you need to enter your Apple ID and password.
In the new window, scroll down and find the small inscription “Subscriptions”. Click the “Manage” button.
In the list that appears, select the desired subscription and change its parameters as you wish.
iCloud and iTunes Match subscriptions
Special mention needs to be made about iCloud and iTunes Match. These are two Apple services that are provided only by subscription. And managing these subscriptions does not follow a standard scenario.
Subscribe to iCloud in iOS:
Settings->iCloud->Storage->Change storage plan. Select the desired tariff.
On Mac computer on OS X
- Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click the iCloud icon.
- In the lower right corner, click the "Manage" button.
- Click "Buy more space" or "Change storage plan."
- Select a plan, click Next, and enter the password for your Apple ID.
On a Windows computer
- Open iCloud for Windows.
- Select "Storage".
- Click Change Storage Plan.
- Select a plan, then click Next.
- Enter your Apple ID password and click Buy.
In all cases, to completely disable your iCloud subscription, you need to click the “Reduce Volume” or “Reduce Storage Volume” button.
Subscribe to iTunes Match allows you to add songs to your iCloud library from using iTunes and listen to them on all your devices.
Subscribe to iTunes Match on iOS. Settings->Music->Subscribe to iTunes Match. (I didn’t find such an option in iOS 10).
Subscribe to iTunes Match on iTunes. From the menu, select Account->View. A window will appear in which you need to enter your Apple ID and password. Scroll to the “iTunes in the Cloud” section. And opposite the iTunes Match line, click the “Details” button.
iTunes Match only has one option - a one-year subscription. The subscription is auto-renewable. To turn off auto-renewal, do the same thing in iTunes as above, but instead of clicking the Learn More button, click the Turn Off Auto-Renewal button.
About the free Apple Music subscription
When you enter the Music program in iOS (or the Music section in iTunes), Apple offers to connect the Apple Music service. In order for you to try the service, the first 3 months of using the service are free.
It should be remembered that this free subscription is auto-renewable, that is, after 3 months you will be charged without warning (you will only receive an invoice by e-mail). As of September 6, 2016, this is 169 rubles per month. To prevent this from happening, you need to disable auto-renewal as described above in the sections: “How to disable/change a subscription in iOS?” or “How do I disable/change my iTunes subscription?”
About subscription to newspapers and magazines
In iOS 5, Apple introduced the Kiosk app for the first time. In iOS 9 it was replaced with Apple News. An application that still does not work in Russia. But the applications of magazines and newspapers remained.
The Apple website has a catalog of all magazines and newspapers, which can be conveniently viewed in the form of lists on a computer in a browser. Or magazines and newspapers can be opened in the App Store on iOS or in iTunes in a special section.

It is worth noting that the expiration date of this subscription will not be determined by the date of cancellation, but by the day before which payment was made.

Manage Subscriptions on iPhone
You can check subscriptions on your iPhone directly from your mobile device. To do this, make sure that it is connected to the Internet and follow these steps:
- Go to the “Settings” menu and select the one you need from the list of available accounts. A new tab will open, click on “iTunes Store and App Store”.
- At the top of the screen, find your unique Apple ID and tap on it.

If you couldn’t find subscriptions on your iPhone, and funds continue to be debited from your Apple ID, then most likely they were issued directly, through a mobile operator or provider.
iCloud subscription
Access to additional free space Apple cloud storage is billed separately from other services. To get into managing your iCloud subscriptions:
- Go to the "Settings" menu and find a separate "iCloud" item here. Typically it is at the top of the list.
- Select “Storage” and click on the line “Change storage plan”. A menu will appear to manage your iCloud subscription.
- Click "Reduce volume" to change your current tariff plan to a cheaper (or even free) one.
- Select "Buy" to purchase additional space.
Before you stop using iPad, transfer your data to another cloud storage or copy important files and documents to your device’s memory.
iTunes Match Subscription
Like iCloud, a subscription to iTunes match is issued separately from other paid services. If, after authorization using an Apple ID account, the user connects iTunes Match, the funds will be debited from the iPhone account. To change payment terms or cancel a paid service, you must:
- Launch iTunes on your computer. Go to the “Account” menu and select “View”.
