There is a lot of debate about whether a hot dog should be considered a sandwich. But let's think logically. A sandwich in its broadest sense is bread with various foods inside or outside it. Accordingly, the favorite of picnics and park walks - the hot dog - should definitely have a place on our list.

3. Croque Monsieur

Definition: hot sandwich with ham and cheese.

Croque monsieur is a French dish, the analogues of which you have probably produced more than once in your kitchen, but did not know what it was called. Now you know, and let the thought warm you that you have at least partially touched the culinary traditions of the Old World. Moreover, even Marcel Proust mentioned this sandwich in his works. This dish owes its name to the legend about its appearance. There lived a cook in France who bore the nickname “cannibal”. He had his own cafe, where he once introduced a new dish: a toasted baguette with cheese and ham. When locals asked what ingredients he used, the chef replied that there was a “monsieur” inside the sandwich, a sarcastic play on his nickname. Literally translated from French, “croque monsieur” means “crisp monsieur.”

4. Ruben

Definition: a grilled sandwich made with corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and usually rye bread.

The history of the creation of this American sandwich takes us back 100 years and has several interpretations. According to one version, this dish was created by Omaha grocer Reuben Kulakofsky during a poker game. According to another, its creator is New York restaurateur Arnold Reuben, whose establishment was visited by actress Annette Sielos, who at that time was starring in a film with Charlie Chaplin. She was hungry and in a hurry, so she was served an impromptu sandwich with the same recipe that eventually became classic.

5. Slider

Definition: a small meat sandwich that looks like a small hamburger.

This dish has many versions, but its constant ingredient remains a small bun. Initially, it was a small hamburger with salmon, foie gras or something else tasty and expensive inside. Perhaps this is the reason for its modest size. Over time, the composition of sliders has expanded, and now it uses various meat fillings, and its popularity has spread far beyond Europe, where it was born more than 100 years ago.

6. Muffuletta

Definition: a sandwich made from round Italian bread containing mortadella, ham, salami, provolone, mozzarella and marinated olive salad.

The composition of the muffuletta filling may change, but one thing in this sandwich should remain unchanged - Sicilian round bread with sesame seeds. This sandwich got its name from this. The invention of this dish is credited to New Orleans grocery store owner Salvatore Lupo, a Sicilian by birth. While various sources name the date of its creation in the 20s of the last century, the first mention of the word “muffuletta” appeared only in 1967.

7. Western sandwich

Definition: omelette sandwich.

This is a very satisfying dish, which in many countries is consumed equally successfully for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The recipe is simple: an omelette, often topped with ham and onions, is sandwiched between two pieces of bread. According to one version, the first to prepare omelet sandwiches were Chinese cooks at the end of the 19th century, who fed them to loggers and railroad workers.

8. Submarine

Definition: sandwich on a long bun with various fillings of meat, cheese and vegetables.

It is often called the "submarine" but goes by other names in different places, including the "Philadelphia sandwich" or the "Continental Italian sandwich." In fact, this is a classic sandwich, which contains many different ingredients, determined by the culinary traditions of the places where it is prepared.

9. Sloppy Joe (Sloppy Joe)

Definition: a bun filled with ground beef cooked in a thick, spicy sauce.

It is unknown what kind of slob Joe we are talking about, but the dish does look sloppy. The same fate awaits anyone who wants to eat this sandwich: it is unlikely that they will be able to keep their hands and face clean.

What is known is that the first mention of "Sloppy Joe" was dated March 27, 1940, in a news magazine ad in Mansfield, Ohio. Two years later in America, “Sloppy Joe” began to be called a loose sweater. Subsequently, over the years, this term denoted a person who is careless about his clothes and appearance, becoming a kind of antonym to the concept of metrosexual.
