History of the group

Formation of the group and the first years of its existence (1996-1999)

The members of Coldplay met in a dormitory at University College London, where they were studying. Did Chris Martin, who went to college to study history, or Jonny Buckland, who had a passion for astronomy, ever know that their future was the famous music group Coldplay? British alternative rock band ColdPlay was formed in 1996, when vocalist Chris Martin and guitarist Jonny Buckland met within the walls of their native London university. They formed the group Pectoralz, which later included bassist Guy Berryman and drummer Will Champion - the latter had to specially study drums to get into the group. The unofficial fifth member was a mutual friend of the musicians, Phil Harvey, who acted as manager. The name ColdPlay appeared a little later and was suggested by one of my friends.
