Both Yuliy Chersanovich and Mikhail Konstantinovich are amazingly incompatible with any widespread and, dare I say it, generally accepted schemes. However, if Kim’s disdain for stereotypes is expressed in the colloquialism and emphasized dramaturgy of his songs (the rhyme is not danced - to hell with it, really! normal people they still speak in prose), then in Shcherbakov this freedom is akin to the absolute looseness and relaxation of a fencer who flawlessly wields a sword. A sharp and irreversible change of melody, a hot break in poetic meter, inexplicable metamorphoses lyrical hero- and all this right in the middle of the song...

Perhaps it is precisely because of this indescribable grace that Shcherbakov is considered “complex”? Come on, if his song, his poetry and melody are accepted by almost any audience from the very first performance, what difficulty is this?..

Complex rhyme gives special beauty, harmony and simplicity to Shcherbakov’s texts. Intraline rhyme, for example.

By the way, Shcherbakov’s popularity among art song lovers has given rise to a phenomenal situation - his songs at times literally “monopolize” this environment; Shcherbakov’s songs are sung almost exclusively. There was even a protest saying: “What if we could sing something like this, but not Shcherbakov...” I myself, having fallen under the spell of these songs in the early nineties, almost abandoned my own creativity and switched to performing; Shcherbakov’s songs were eighty percent in my repertoire. It was a creative near-death. In order to break free from the influence of the author of “The Trumpeter,” I finally had to write a song a la Shcherbakov:

And, preferring to serve other people's words,

I forgot my bitter ballads

Despite the fact that the whole song from start to finish was imitative, I still like it - maybe just because of its similarity to Shcherbakov’s. I am especially flattered by the mention next to Shcherbakov, whom I consider an unconditional genius, the main phenomenon in modern Russian poetry, without any discounts on the genre. He may not have moved the song forward, but it was poetry that moved forward, inventing his crazy prosody, and the guitar only helped him. True, I don’t think that we have direct similarities,<...>- but if there is, it’s happiness.

Man was conceived with the expectation of difficult times, hoping to be the best bard in Russia... But then Russia turned into something unclear, and the bards became something unknown. And Shcherbakov chose this path - he goes into some very distant spheres, very bravely experiments with meter and rhythm. Yes, he has many failures, but nothing can be done - the person develops.

The fact is that the word “bard” to Mikhail Shcherbakov, oddly enough, is not as easily applicable as to many of the well-known names I have already listed. The word "bard" is a little too narrow for him. Of course, first of all, he is a poet.
