Well, these are probably the best music festivals this summer. Where did you point your skis?

What do most people think of when they hear the word "music festival"? As a rule, images of Woodstock, mountains of garbage and crowds of hippies are imagined. While there are still a few festivals reminiscent of the 1960s counterculture, there are many music festivals today that have nothing in common with Woodstock. The reason for this is probably the ever-increasing price of concert tickets. There are music festivals everywhere, but most of them are just small local events. However, there are also large global events that attract hundreds of thousands of guests. They also started small, but concert promoters quickly became millionaires.

Ultra-Miami, 330,000 visitors

One of the largest electronic music festivals in the world is held annually in Miami, Florida. Since 1999, Ultra - Miami has grown from a small underground weekend festival to an annual gathering of hundreds of thousands of fans. In 2014, the festival was visited by 330,000 music lovers. ID&T Belgium and SFX Entertainment also produces Tomorrowworld in the Chattahoochee Hills and Tomorrowland in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Electric Daisy Carnival is the third electronic music festival on this list. This special event is planned in four different cities in 2015. Last year, the e-Carnival was held in Puerto Rico, Mexico City and New York. Las Vegas is being added this year. The event started with the Insomniac Festival in 1997 and welcomed just over 375,000 fans in 2014. The addition of a new city in the Western United States guarantees a decent increase in attendance this year. This festival has become mega-popular among the public due to documentary film EDC 2013: Under The Electric Sky, entirely dedicated to the event.

New Orleans Jazz Festival, 435,000 attendees

The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival is the oldest music festival on this list. This particular festival has become one of the biggest attractions in the city of New Orleans. It is estimated that more than 435,000 people attended this event in 2014. Jazz Festival 2015 years will pass from April 24th to May 3rd, with famous headliners such as Elton John, The Who, Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band.

Essence in New Orleans, 550,000 visitors

Believe it or not, the New Orleans Jazz Festival is not the biggest music event in New Orleans. That title actually belongs to the festival known as Essense. This festival takes place in a special Superdome and has earned a very good reputation for itself from the first years of its existence. Last year's party hosted more than 550,000 people. This annual celebration of African American music, art and culture is scheduled for July 2-5 this year. Participants have yet to be announced, but Prince and Lionel Richie were among the headliners here in 2014.

Coachella Festival, 675,000 visitors

The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is probably the most... famous festival on this list. In fact, this is how many people imagine a large-scale modern music festival. Coachella has been held in Indio, California every year since 1999. Last year it was attended by more than 675,000 people. This year AC/DC, David Guetta, Drake, Jack White and many other celebrities will perform here. When it first began, the small Coachella festival attracted just a couple thousand guests, but it is now the world's most profitable music festival, earning $78.3 million in 2014.

Rock in Rio, 700,000 visitors

First held in Rio de Janeiro in 1985, Rock in Rio has become one of the largest music festivals in the world. Summerfest in Milwaukee, 850,000 visitors

This festival is not as famous as Coachella. However, Summerfest is the largest music festival in the United States. In fact, it is the largest music festival in the Western Hemisphere. Summerfest takes place at Henry Maier Festival Park, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. First held in 1968, Summerfest has grown into a very large event and is nicknamed the “Big Gig.” Summerfest lasts a week - during this time more than 700 performers, both famous and not so famous, manage to perform here. The biggest advantage of Summerfest is the price. Unlike many other major festivals like Coachella, Bonnaroo and Ultra, Summerfest is very affordable. Last year, a day ticket cost only $15. Some festivals collect an admission fee and then sell additional tickets for individual shows. But not Summerfest... Here a single ticket is valid for all performers and concerts.

Mawazine Festival, 2.6 million visitors

Mawazine is one of only two music festivals in the world to attract over 1 million people. Last year, 2.6 million people attended the festival in Rabat, Morocco. This outstanding event in Moroccan culture and art was founded by Mounis Majidi, personal secretary to King Mohammad IV. Majidi is also the founder of the group “Moroc Culture”, which organizes various cultural events in the country. As you might have guessed, Mawazine is the biggest of these events. The festival runs from May 29th to June 6th. Both international celebrities and local Moroccan performers perform. Last year the headliner was Justin Timberlake. Popular group Maroon 5 is expected this year.

Donauinselfest, 3.1 million visitors

World of travel

The Mozart Festival in Salzburg, which has been gathering crowds of opera lovers for many years, or its complete opposite - the Woodstock rock festival that thundered throughout the world in the late 1960s, which attracted several tens of thousands of participants and spectators. These grandiose events are on everyone's lips. But there are much better music festivals in the world, which hundreds of thousands and even millions of people strive to attend. This good way spend time and save a lot (during the festival week you can see a sea of performers, while tickets for one concert can be much more expensive).

The best music festivals in the world

For fans of electronic music

Tickets for the Ultra festival are quickly snapped up (via the Internet) by electronic music lovers from all over the globe. It is not surprising that from 330 to 350 thousand tourists gather here every year. Among its “brothers”, this Florida music festival is considered one of the largest, in front of a huge stage - there is nowhere for an apple to fall, people are huddled together like sprat in a jar! “Ultra” is relatively young (it has been organized - usually in the spring - since 1999). But if earlier it was just a “rocker get-together”, now it is an amazing several-day show.

Just ten years ago, one of the best music festivals (among European ones) “Tomorrowland” was founded. But this Belgian miracle, which attracts up to 360 thousand people, has already won several international awards. The organizers of the event (which usually seethes and bubbles for three days) are the Dutch from the ID&T corporation. Only stars come to this festival - from the Swede Alesso to the legendary Armin van Buuren.

Another electronic and dance music festival (“Electric Daisy Carnival”) unfurls its “flags” in several major cities (usually New York and Las Vegas, plus the metropolises of Mexico and Puerto Rico). The festival started in 1997, since then it has constantly gained momentum, and now the number of its visitors has exceeded 370 thousand. This is a very noisy and beautiful celebration with carnivals, acrobatic shows and processions, held at the end of June.

For jazz lovers

What kind of city do you think has the right to bear the title “Capital of American Jazz”? Of course it's amazing New Orleans! The musical “Jazz and Heritage Festival” has been held in the spring since time immemorial (in our “top” it is the most “ancient”). Now the attendance of this event has grown significantly and amounts to approximately 435 thousand fans of traditional jazz. Of course, the city authorities welcome such a major cultural event - it brings a lot of money to the budget. In addition, these days, world celebrities visit Louisiana - like the British Elton John or the legendary Jimmy Buffett.

African American Culture Forum

Another best music festival held in New Orleans can easily compete with the previous one, because it attracts up to half a million-plus guests. This celebration of music is called “Essence”, and since 1995 it has been held in mid-July - always on the field of the Mercedes-Benz Superdome stadium. The performances of the stars are not everything: the organizers simultaneously conduct lectures and trainings. The festival is dedicated to African-American music and culture. World-famous black performers (such as Prince or Mary J. Blige) delight those present with their performances.

The most profitable in the world

We are still not leaving the United States, because every year in the state of California (the city of Indio) an unforgettable music festival (up to 680 thousand participants and guests) “Coachella” takes place! You've probably heard this name. In the valley of the same name, lovers of modern music gather for several days (the program includes performances by performers who prefer rock, pop or hip-hop). This forum is considered the most profitable of all the festivals in our rating (its “box office” exceeds $78 million). The first, very modest, “wave” of the festival took place in 1999; now the scope of Coachella is simply amazing.

Rock in Rio pushes boundaries

Up to 700 thousand spectators are welcomed by the Rock in Rio festival held in Rio de Janeiro. Growing from a small music event organized in 1985 to a world-class event, this Brazilian music celebration has expanded to several cities around the world (besides Rio de Janeiro, Madrid, Lisbon, Las Vegas). The cult Metallica, Katy Perry and the mega-popular Rihanna and Taylor Swift became the festival's most welcome and anticipated guests.

Largest in the Western Hemisphere

We return to the expanses of America again - on the agenda is the Milwaukee Summerfest. Just imagine - in 2014, 850 thousand people came here wanting to join this incredible event! In the USA (and throughout the Western Hemisphere) this is the largest music forum. It was founded in 1968 (a year before the famous Woodstock) and usually lasts a whole week. During this time, up to seven hundred groups and singers - both experienced and famous, and beginners - manage to perform for the guests. The organizers claim that this is also the cheapest festival: the ticket price a year ago started at $15.

2.5 to 3.1 million guests

You might be surprised, but one of the best music festivals in the world (the number of guests of which has long exceeded a million) is based in African Morocco - in the city of Rabat. This miracle dedicated to Moroccan culture is called “Mawazine”. Last year the festival was visited by 2.6 million tourists and local residents. Of course, in addition to “their” stars, the organizers also invite foreign ones - such as Justin Timberlake or Adam Levine and his band.

We present the best music festival in the world - the grand “Donauinselfest”, held on a picturesque island in the middle of the Danube. Participants (from all known musical styles and, of course, classical orchestras and soloists) and enthusiastic visitors fly in and out of Vienna, and then travel by ferry. The number of guests in 2014 exceeded 3.1 million – can you imagine the scale? Austria gave the world Mozart and Strauss, so it fully deserves such an annual holiday!

The world's largest festivals began in the hippie era. Today, exciting action takes place on beaches, deserts, villages, hills and ocean platforms across the planet. Discover 50 of the world's best, quirkiest and biggest festivals. Perhaps this TOP will become your “to-do-list” for 2017.

What do you think of when you hear the phrase “music festival”? If cheeky young people appear before your mind's eye, little known bands and the indigestible sound of the equipment, then know that this has not been the case for a long time. Today's festivals boast a high level of organization, adequate visitors and top bands. The best part is that professionals work not only abroad - festival culture is slowly but surely making its way into Russian realities.

What do organizers offer visitors today? Firstly, you can visit a large number of groups in one or several days, and the ticket price will be significantly lower compared to prices separately for each group. Secondly, on the territory of the festival there are various recreation and entertainment areas, which is a big plus for visitors with children or big companies. And thirdly, often such events can offer different level comfort for any wallet: from living as a “savage” in your tent to comfortable houses. And, of course, a lot of positive emotions!
