How The Walking Dead ended in comics. Comics the walking dead The walking dead comics in Russian

We have already told you about those based on comics and now it’s the turn of the heavy artillery. In front of you " The Walking Dead"- a nominee for the Golden Globe Award and a record holder for the number of viewers. More than seventeen million people gathered on television to watch the first episode of the fifth season!

Meanwhile, not all viewers know that in fact the famous television series is based on comic books, and those who have heard about it do not even suspect that the public’s favorite, Daryl Dixon, is not in the comics at all.

Constant value

Robert Kirkman, the comic book author, took as a basis the traditional “Romer” zombies, clumsy and wheezing with effort. The more decomposed a walking corpse is, the slower it moves. If the heroes notice the biter from afar, they can calmly pass by. The real danger is posed only by the “herds”, which simply prevail in numbers, and the dead, unexpectedly falling from the roof, grabbing one’s leg in the dark, breaking through flimsy fences. They enliven the narrative, but do not play a key role.

Much more important here are the constantly developing relationships between people and, interestingly, the personal growth of the character. A striking example of metamorphosis was the serial Carol, from a gray mouse by the finale of the fifth season, she became a decisive manipulator and conspirator, capable of doing anything for the survival of her group.

Rick in the series is more reasonable (at least for now). Like other heroes, he lost a lot, but in the comics - much more.

In no way inferior to George Martin, Kirkman does not spare his heroes at all. In both the TV series and the comics, people get hurt and die all the time. Before you have time to become attached, the person no longer exists. Some commit suicide, others die in battle with criminals, and others are eaten alive by walkers.

To date, in the comics you can count more than eighty dead (and another magnificent tiger), and in the series this list has exceeded one hundred and fifty names, and there will be more. The comic and its successor seem to be only going from strength to strength.

How steel was hardened

Deaths are deaths, but no one has canceled the central figures. Rick, Carl, Michonne, Maggie, Glenn, Carol and Daryl are the key characters of the series, around whom the main storyline is built by the end of the fifth season. The authors regularly present us with bloody, knee-shivering surprises, killing characters that the audience has already managed to let into their hearts.

It would seem that in comics you can do things that you can’t on TV, but in the TV series this scene turned out to be an order of magnitude more cruel than in the comics.

At the same time, the series, following the canon, remains so original and self-sufficient that it’s time to place bets to predict who is next in line for elimination. And this trick of changing the main cast keeps us in additional tension. For example, in the comic, Laurie dies not in childbirth, but during an attack on the prison, and baby Judith dies with her. What fate awaits the child in the series - in a world where children have no place?

At first insufficiently experienced and rough, by the finale of the fifth season, the noticeably thinned group came to be not just a strong team, but a real family. Having lost a lot along the way, these people learned to appreciate and love those who stand next to them, shoulder to shoulder, and fight for life until their last breath.

Daryl Dixon is a big mystery of the series (remember, he is not in the comics). In fact, he is the only one who has not yet had a lover. The truth is, the second half of the fifth season hints that love line will appear soon, and very unexpected.

An important difference between the series and the comics was the “recruitment” of actor Norman Reedus. Executive producer Frank Darabont developed the role of Daryl Dixon especially for him and, as it turned out, he was right. Thanks to the bullying of his marginal family of an alcoholic father and a criminal brother, Daryl turned out to be the best equipped to survive. He is a skilled tracker and hunter, armed with the perfect weapon of defense - a crossbow. The younger Dixon tends to remain aloof, but we soon learn that he is not at all alien to human feelings.

Rick Grames changes in the opposite direction - from the standard guardian of order, who abhors any unjustified violence, he turns into an possessed beast, in whose throat a quiet but confident growl bubbles. If earlier he tried to look for survivors, now he asks everyone he meets three questions. How many walkers have you killed? How many living have you killed? Why did you kill them? This is how he repeatedly decided the fate of newcomers in order to protect the group.

Know your enemy by sight

An anti-hero who would become the core driving force of the entire universe, as you might guess, in “ The Walking Dead" No. Many crazy characters and unscrupulous gangs roam the expanses of post-apocalyptic America. But there are several colorful antagonists, one of whom was completely unnecessarily “stretched out” for two seasons.

In the hands of the Governor is the town of Woodberry, a lot of supplies, an army and even a tank. In the comics, he is the unbalanced Latino Brian Blake (and in the series - the European Philip, who once introduces himself as Brian), skillfully hiding his true character from the townspeople. For them, he is eloquent, always calm, reliable. And only those close to him know the truth about Blake’s inhumanity and the secrets hidden in his house.

The conflict with Rick’s group and two “meetings” alone with Michonne become the beginning of his fall into the abyss. In the series, the Governor was given much more time, but some things were unforgivably messed up. We will not publish the colorful moments when Michonne comes to visit Mayor Woodberry, so as not to shock the especially impressionable. If the Governor has still annoyed you, read the comic - here This I'll like it.

The serial Governor is more humane, and he even manages to empathize.

Another hostile group is found only in the series and was created, in fact, specifically for Maggie’s sister, Beth (and for several other heroes). She lives at Grady Memorial Hospital and is led by police officer Dawn. At first glance, the survivors are undoubtedly antagonistic - some of the rules set in the community seem unacceptable, and covering up crimes is completely contrary to Rick's policies - but this routine is partly logical and fair, and Dawn is in many ways a reflection of Grames himself. For him, as for Dawn, the main thing is the safety of his own group, for the sake of which it is necessary to eliminate any threat without further ado or thought.

We watched his development as a leader for a long time, watched as he gradually became tougher and more decisive. And we treat his actions with understanding, knowing that he is a good person who sometimes does bad things. But how would we perceive his image if we first met him already as he became?

Will Alexandria fall?

In the comic, Rick and his group eventually get lucky and discover a safe zone called Alexandria. Peace and tranquility reigns in it - you can live behind a high fence, without thinking that somewhere out there, in the thicket of the forest and along the streets of quiet cities, the stinking dead are roaming. The survivors from the series also reached this place in the fifth season. But will the walls stand?

Rick prepared for the meeting with the new villain. He has a friendly and selfless army behind him.

In the comic there are three colonies - Hilltop, Alexandria and the Kingdom. And all three are terrorized by the maniac Negan, the leader of the “Saviors” gang. We look forward to meeting him next season! He forces residents to pay tribute, under the guise of noble motives: supposedly protecting settlements from zombies. In his hands baseball bat, wrapped in barbed wire. Negan affectionately calls her Lucille and treats her more tenderly than any woman. In his colony, people have no rights - he rapes the women he likes and cripples their husbands. But Rick doesn’t like this, and he’s ready to fight back against the despot. Thus began a war that will only end when Negan goes to jail.

What will Rick do with Negan in the series? A good question, considering that at the end of the fifth season, the former sheriff almost reached his breaking point.

But trouble does not come alone. The watchman heard dead men talking. The Whisperers, a mysterious cult with hundreds of followers, come to the fore. They disguise themselves as walkers: the skin of the dead helps them remain undetected and move calmly among large herds. It is not yet clear who the colonies are friends or enemies. But the grown-up Karl has already set off to save his new “whispering” friend, Lydia. Only Kirkman's team knows whether he will survive. And what will happen in the series... well, it’s generally impossible to predict.

Surely the first appearance of the Whisperers in the series will be shocking. How?! Zombies - and they talk? But no. Just people.

To each his own

The series and comics also differ in the pace of the story. The perception of the “Walking” universe largely depends on how you got acquainted with it. Start with the comics, and the series will seem unnecessarily long. Dynamic series are replaced by long, measured everyday life. The heroes are immersed in everyday worries: they are looking for food, the tired wander along deserted roads, find shelter on a farm, then refuge in an impregnable, at first glance, prison, and the endless destruction of biting creatures turns into the same routine as a cup of coffee in the morning and a traffic jam in the morning. way to work. On such days, characters talk more than act, and silence turns out to be more significant than words.

In contrast to the series, the comic is a treasure trove of dynamic scenes. Events are unfolding at hurricane speed. The resolution of the conflict only means that it will immediately be replaced by a new, even larger one, which took root five issues ago. The tension builds not from issue to issue, but from page to page.

Time flies quickly - before we even have time to look back, little Karl has become quite an adult.

Another difference between the series and the comics was the romantic relationships. No, of course, they exist in both cases, but the serial “Santa Barbara” is very chaste. Bed scenes can be counted on one hand, and the connections between group members are rather platonic. Even the spouses Maggie and Glenn enjoy each other's company only at first. In the comic, Carol invites Rick and Laurie to live together, and we are shown intertwined bodies with enviable regularity.

Sex is generally an important part of comics. A powerful release gives the characters the opportunity to feel alive at this festival of death. Connections, traditional and not so, and even love triangles appear on the pages The Walking Dead "regularly. Andrea and her sister are flirting with old man Dale, Tyreese is hanging out with Michonne and the omnipresent Carol... They have a busy life there, in general.

In the final episode of the fifth season, Glenn faced a serious test. Until the last minute, the audience did not know whether he would survive or not. But in the comics, the hero has long been gone, but his son Hershel Jr. exists. The father was killed by the scumbag Negan, choosing a victim with a rhyme and smashing Glenn's head with the help of his favorite Lucille, an irreplaceable baseball bat.

Glenn's death brought tears to even Rick's eyes, and Negan will certainly pay for his actions. Meanwhile, the events of the series currently end with the group arriving at a cottage community that looks suspiciously like Alexandria and settling down there. Meeting Negan couldn't be closer.

Make us one

Woven from contrasts, the zombie universe was born in a comic book, but has grown into a series, books and video games that unite each other, walking a fine line between meaningless copying and one’s own reading.

In the summer of 2015, a pleasant new product awaits us - a branch of “Walking”. Robert Kirkman remains among the masterminds, and Dave Erickson, responsible for Sons of Anarchy, has been appointed writer and showrunner. The working title of the plot branch is Cobalt, and its events will develop in Los Angeles. The management of the AMC channel is confident of success: it is already known that there will definitely be a second season.

The secret of popularity " The Walking Dead"is that the series and the comics seem to be telling about two parallel realities, in which there are many of the same characters, but their actions, motives and destinies, as it should be in such stories, are different. In the series, Rick kills Shane, and Carl finishes off zombie Shane, but in the comics everything is exactly the opposite. And this is the main highlight: the “duet” performs its work “a cappella”, without interfering with each other, but complementing it with its own, new sound.

* * *

Alas, we were never really told about the causes of the zombie apocalypse. Very little is known. Firstly, the bite of a risen corpse only leads to death, and the virus seems to have been sprayed into the air. Secondly, anyone becomes a walker after death if the central nervous system is not hit in time.

This is the irony of the entire universe. You fight off the living dead, but very soon you yourself will become one...

No. You're already walking.

And she came in search of refuge. Her appearance causes a significant rift within the group, and Rick's role as leader is called into question as others begin to fear for his sanity.

The Best Defense / Best defense (25-30)

Rick, Michonne and Glenn, whom Rick met in Atlanta, leave the prison in search of other survivors after seeing a helicopter flying. This search leads them to a small town called Woodbury. It houses a heavily armed and well-organized group of survivors led by a man named The Governor. The Governor takes them prisoner, cripples Rick and rapes Michonne.

This Sorrowful Life (31-36)

Rick, Glenn and Michonne manage to escape Woodbury with the help of other survivors who wish to be free from the brutal rule of the Governor. They arrive safely at the prison, which is besieged by hordes of zombies. The reunited group fights them, trying with all their might to prevent its destruction.

The Calm Before / The calm before... (37-42)

The group is trying to recover from the nightmare in Woodbury. The relationships between the survivors continue to develop. Rick's wife, Lori, passes final stages pregnancy. All this time, the group is preparing for the brutal revenge of the Governor and the insane residents of his city.

Made To Suffer / Doomed to Suffer (43-48)

Left disfigured by Michonne's assassination attempt and recovering from his wounds, the Governor tells his men a tall tale about the supposedly evil inhabitants of the prison. Soon, scouts from Woodbury find the location of the prison, and the Governor and his army arrive there. The assault begins. However, the people living in prison do not intend to give up and fight back against the Governor’s army. Having lost a dozen people, the Governor retreats. Rick's team also has losses: Axel, Andrea and he himself are wounded.

Tyreese and Michonne decide to immediately counterattack and escape from the prison to the Governor's location. Their plan fails. Tyreese is captured, and after unsuccessful negotiations with Rick about surrendering the prison, the Governor beheads Tyreese with the sword of Michonne, who managed to escape.

Meanwhile, Dale, Andrea, Glenn, Maggie, Allen's children and Sophia leave the prison in a trailer, fearing another attack. Their fears are justified: this time the attack is more fierce. Unable to withstand the pressure, the defenders of the prison die, including Lori and her newborn daughter. Only Rick and Carl manage to escape. But the Governor's cruelty turns against him. One of the fighters, seeing Lori and Judith killed, realizes that he was following the monster and kills his former leader. After this, the remnants of the Governor's army barricade themselves in the prison building, where they find themselves trapped without food or ammunition.

Here We Remain / Life Goes On (49-54)

Having lost his wife and daughter, Rick is completely devastated. Together with Karl, he gets to a small town. There are no living people there and Rick and Carl take refuge in one of the houses. All this time zombies are trying to break into them. Rick, not yet recovering from the wounds received during the first assault on the prison, becomes seriously ill. Karl, who is only eight years old, is forced to defend their temporary shelter and take care of his sick father.

Rick soon recovers. Having exhausted the food supplies taken from the prison and found in abandoned houses, Rick and his son go hunting in the nearby forest. During their next game hunt, they find a car in good condition and take it for themselves. One day an incident occurs - a telephone rings in one of the abandoned houses. Rick rushes there and picks up the phone. At the other end of the line, a woman tells him about a group of survivors and invites him to join them. But Rick has already experienced enough to once again trust someone unknown. Nevertheless, he continues to call back the stranger. Soon he begins to hallucinate that he is talking on the phone to his dead wife.

Some time later, Michonne, who escaped from the Governor, comes to their hideout, after which they decide to go in search of people who left the prison after the Governor’s first attack. Using the car Rick found, they hit the road and soon find Dale, Andrea, Glenn, Maggie and the children on Hershel's farm.

What We Become / What we have become (55-60)

Rick, Carl and Michonne are again among friends, although the meeting is far from joyful due to the news brought by Rick. For Maggie, what happened turns into a shock when she finds out that all members of her family are dead. Dale is also unhappy, he begins to fear Rick and admits this to Andrea.

One night, new living people appear at the farm - former military man Abraham, his girlfriend Rosita and a man named Eugene, who introduced himself as a scientist. They inform the farm's inhabitants that they are heading to Washington, where, according to Eugene, a security zone has been created and offer to go with them. Rick doesn't really trust strangers, but he understands that staying on the farm won't keep his friends safe. The rest come to the same conclusion, after which everyone sets off.

On the way, Abraham talks about the herd - a very dense, numerous crowd of the dead, through which it is almost impossible to break through. At night, during one of the rest stops, Maggie tries to hang herself; they barely have time to pump her out. After several days of travel, the Group arrives at hometown Rika. He suggests going there to pick up weapons and ammunition from an abandoned police station. Abraham and Karl go with him, and the rest remain waiting for them at the gas station.

While Rick, Carl and Abraham are away, the others are waiting for them at an abandoned farm along the road. Dale again confides in Andrea his fears about Rick. Meanwhile, Rick and his companions are attacked by thugs, which they barely manage to repel. Soon they arrive in the city where Rick used to live. There they find Morgan Jones still alive. Unfortunately, he did not save his son Dwayne and the boy became a zombie. However, he agrees to join Rick's group, and they, having re-stocked weapons at the police station, head back. But on the road they come across a herd - a very dense crowd of zombies. Trying to break through, they lose their car and part of what they took from the city, and only by miracle do they manage to get to the rest alive and unharmed. Before the herd reaches them, Rick and his companions quickly leave. “You don’t have to be so simple.”

Fear The Hunters / Fear of hunters (61-66)

During the next stop, a terrible event occurs - for unknown reasons, little Ben kills his brother Billy. This puts Rick in a difficult position. Ben can harm any member of the group and no one will understand it. Abraham suggests killing the boy, which understandably draws protest from Dale and Rick, but some agree with Abraham, but no one can bring themselves to do it. The dispute is unexpectedly resolved by Carl, who kills Ben early in the morning while everyone is sleeping. No one sees this; the boy was able to sneak through Glenn, who was on duty, unnoticed. But Karl's father knows that the boy got up before him, but he does not think that his son did it. At the same time, the travelers meet a black pastor, Gabriel, who offers them shelter in his church near the road for the opportunity to feed him. On the way there, Dale suddenly disappears.

Having settled in the church, Rick and the others are soon attacked by unknown armed men. As it turns out, they're the ones who kidnapped Dale, and what's worse, they're cannibals. They ate Dale's other leg, although they didn't eat any further. As it turned out, he deliberately lagged behind the group, as he was bitten during the last attack of the dead. Soon Rick, Abraham, Andrea and Michonne come upon the cannibals and brutally deal with them.

Rick gradually begins to fear himself after what he did, Carl confesses to him that he killed Ben, and this upsets Rick the most. Before his death, Dale still admits to Rick what he thinks about him, but does not deny that until now all his companions are alive thanks to him, so he asks Rick to continue leading the group of survivors.

Life Among Them / Life among them (67-72)

The journey to Washington continues. Rick begins to lose his sense of reality. During rest stops, while on watch, he talks on a stolen phone with the deceased Lori, not distinguishing reality from hallucinations. Soon the survivors reach Washington, but even this city is occupied by evil spirits. The survivors begin to become despondent when a certain Aaron comes out to meet them. As it turned out, one of the suburbs of Washington was cleared and surrounded by an impenetrable fence. About fifty people live there under the leadership of former Senator Douglas. From time to time, special groups make forays into Washington for food, medicine, clothing and other items. After Abraham and Rick rescue the ambushed miners, Aaron declares trust in Rick and his companions and invites them to join the community.

The town really looks peaceful, just like it did before the zombie outbreak. As it turns out, Aaron is a scout who is looking for survivors and if they have positive qualities, he invites them to the community to expand it. There is a place for every new person here. So Rick and Michonne become local guardians of order, Gabriel, respectively, is a priest, Abraham is a builder, Morgan is a cook, etc. Community leader Douglas makes a good impression.

Rick and his friends' harrowing journey has come to an end, but are they ready to return to peaceful life?

Too Far Gone / We've gone nowhere further (73-78)

On their first trip, their company is attacked by walkers. Abraham rushes to Holly's aid, but Tobin (the construction chief) orders everyone else to retreat, pointing out that she cannot be helped. The stubborn Abraham, who has seen worse, saves Holly. After this incident, everyone begins to respect him and literally a week later he becomes the construction chief. In a conversation with Douglas, Tobin realizes his past mistakes and says that this way he will even be calmer.

Douglas' son, Spencer, hit on Andrea. His mother (Regina) notices this and begins to woo him, but her son says that this is just communication. Glenn, under the pretext of replenishing supplies, ends up in the armory when Olivia was issuing weapons. Rick, having acquired a weapon, offers it to Andrea, but she refuses and starts a conversation in which she points out that they are safe here and nothing bad should happen to them.

Scott has a fever. Only Doctor Cloyd and Heath know that he was bitten, who, together with Glenn, goes to the city to get antibiotics. At night on the roof, they notice that a large group of walkers has huddled near a small store, as if something had lured them there, and in the morning they see a detachment of armed people in the store. They throw one of their people out to be eaten by walkers in order to gain time and leave their shelter. Taking advantage of this moment, Heath and Glenn sneak into the pharmacy, find some of the necessary medications and get out of there, but the roar of motorcycle engines is heard by members of the armed group.

In the evening after the opening of the temple, Gabriel conducts a service. Afterwards, arriving at Douglas's house, he says that everyone he came with is evil and will do harm, but Douglas does not pay attention to this and asks Gabriel to leave.

While patrolling the town, Rick notices a man sleeping on the street. After meeting Pete, he finds out that he had a quarrel with his wife and therefore spends the night here. Rick later remembers that he noticed a bruise on Ron (Pete's son). After drawing analogies and talking with Pete's wife Jessie, he comes to Pete and begins a showdown, which results in a fight. (Small aside: after this scene, a joke was added to the comic in the form of a color fragment). Result: Jesse and his son move out of Pete's place, Rick feels like a complete psycho. He seems to calm down after talking with Douglas about Alexander Davidson, whom he killed, considering him dangerous. Rick reveals his secret about Shane's relationship and death. Douglas sends Rick home to see Carl, but he is very offended and leaves for school. Rick, as Douglas asked, comes to see him and after a conversation heads home. Sitting in the room, Rick begins to “talk on the phone with Laurie” and at that moment Carl appears, who believes that his father has really gone crazy.

Scott is dying. During the funeral, Pete appears in an agitated state and tries to stab Rick to death. Regina (Douglas's wife) tries to calm the man down, and he, in a state of passion, cuts her throat. At Douglas's request, Rick kills Pete, and the shot attracts the attention of the same armed group that Glenn and Heath noticed.

While the dead are being buried in the town, during the funeral service, armed people try to enter the town. But everything quickly ends with Andrea's fire support from her position in the tower and the skillful actions of Rick and his team. Once everyone returns to the temple to make sure everything is in order, Rick notices Douglas leaving the hall. Having caught up with him, he demands that he return to the people and calm them down as a leader.

But he declares that the leader is now Rick.

No Way Out / There is no way out (79-84)

Calm is slowly returning to the town of the living. Only Douglas still cannot get over his loss. Aaron warns him that he can no longer go beyond the wall to look for survivors. Meanwhile, Abraham and his men decide to drive away the dead gathered at the gate. As usual, Andrea goes to the bell tower, and everyone else, armed with crowbars, knives and other quiet weapons, goes to battle.

Unexpectedly for everyone, a herd of dead people comes to the town. Abraham and his comrades barely have time to return before the herd lays siege to the town. Andrea finds herself trapped in the bell tower.

Rick is urgently taking action to ensure people's safety. Additional armed posts are set up, and several families are concentrated in one house. Jesse and Ron move into Rick and Carl's house.

In the morning, another problem is discovered - one of the sections of the wall surrounding the town turns out to be unreliably fastened and begins to stagger under the pressure of the dead. Glenn, Heath and Spencer make a desperate attempt to get to Andrea and in the end all four find themselves cut off from the others.

Meanwhile, the unreliable section still falls off and the dead begin to seep into the town. They kill Tobin and bite Morgan, and Michonne cuts off his bitten hand. The rest, realizing that they won’t be able to stop the zombies, run home. Spencer recklessly invites Andrea to run away with him, leaving the others and instantly loses her favor.

Meanwhile, Rick himself is faced with a choice - to try to save as many living people as possible, which almost certainly threatens death, or to save himself with Carl and survive, leaving the others in trouble. However, Rick is not going to leave people in trouble. Having captured one of the walkers, he smears himself with the dead man's entrails, as he did before, and goes out to help with Carl, Jesse, Ron and Michonne. Maggie and Sophia stay behind, desperate to leave this way. Morgan dies from loss of blood.

During the passage between the walkers, Ron and Jesse die. Douglas tries to shoot himself while surrounded by walkers, but notices Rick and decides to help him. With his shots, he attracts the attention of zombies, and they bite him. In agony, Douglas begins to shoot in different directions and one of the bullets hits Karl in the head. Rick runs to the hospital bay with Carl in his arms, hoping to save his son.

We Find Ourselves / We have found ourselves (85-90)

After the battle, Rick, again forced to take on the role of leader, announces that the community will be restored and that no dead will drive them away from here. Abraham, Glenn, Spencer, Aaron and other survivors collect the corpses to burn them.

Rick, sitting in the infirmary, admits to Denise that Ron and Jesse died because of him. Glenn apologizes to Maggie for leaving, and Maggie understands. Later, everyone attends the funeral of Tobin, Morgan, Douglas, Jesse and Ron. Rick says that all his decisions were wrong and suggests that everyone present their own idea about further survival.

Sitting in the infirmary, Rick begins to talk to an unconscious Carl when suddenly Carl starts coughing. Rick tells Denise about this and she, having examined Karl, says that Karl is still in a coma and no changes have occurred. While walking near the graves, Rick notices Michonne near Morgan's grave. She says she will never be happy.

The next morning, Andrea, Maggie, Olivia, Aaron and Eric begin killing the dead. Meanwhile, Karl woke up. As it turned out, he suffered short amnesia from the wound; he forgot about the events that took place in prison after the Governor’s attack. Rick helps him remember the past.

Meanwhile, new problems are brewing and food is running out. Rick and his group go on an expedition to find food, unaware that a conspiracy is brewing against him. Glenn turns out to be an accidental witness, and as a result, the community almost faces bloodshed again. Rick uses his leadership abilities and brings the rebels to reason. Nicholas apologizes to Rick. Holly suggests to Abraham that it's time to take matters into his own hands. Rick and Andrea have sex because they are both lonely.

A Larger World / Huge World (91-96)

The group that went to the city returns with a large supply of provisions, but Rick realizes that soon there will be no food at all and decides to establish agriculture. Andrea finally decides to forget about Dale's death. Carl has nightmares and remembers how he killed Ben.

Abraham and Michonne go into the city to investigate. All this time, a stranger armed with a revolver is watching them. Abraham and Michonne meet him after a short skirmish with zombies. He turns out to be a rather clever guy, he takes the sword from Michonne and takes Abraham hostage. To Rick, who came at his request, he introduces himself as Paul Monroe (Jesus). He came from the other side of Washington, from a larger community of two hundred people. He tells Rick that he and his men are not the only survivors, and offers to take a few people to his community so they can look for something they need. However, Rick, not trusting Paul, knocks him out.

The group ties Paul up and takes him to the infirmary. Rick warns all survivors in Alexandria about the appearance of a stranger and a possible attack from his community. Rick asks the group to begin preparations, after which he visits Paul and asks him some questions. Michonne, Abraham and Rick decide to find the communities Paul was talking about under Andrea's cover. Having reached the review site, Rick begins to believe that the stranger was telling the truth, and their whole life could change.

Returning to Alexandria, Rick notices Carl communicating with a tied-up Paul. After a short conversation, Rick agrees to the deal and begins to gather the group for a hike. After going through a rather difficult path, Rick, along with Paul, Michonne, Glenn, Carl and Andrea, reach the wanderer’s community. There they are met by the community leader Gregory, who is very similar to Douglas. But as soon as Rick has time to get to know him, a certain member of the community attacks Gregory and, muttering some nonsense about blackmail, stabs him with a knife. Rick has to kill the attacker, which, as always, almost ruins the good relationship that had just begun. Paul manages to calm his comrades, after which he explains to Rick what could have happened.

It turns out that the community led by Gregory is protected by a gang of a certain Negan, calling themselves the “Saviors.” They clear the area around the community of zombies, demanding in exchange tribute in the form of half of the products produced in the community. And now, apparently, something has gone wrong. Having learned about this, Rick offers Gregory to solve the problem with the Saviors in exchange for half of the property, to which Gregory gives a positive answer. As they prepare to leave for Alexandria, Andrea tells her group that the Hilltop residents are cowards who don't care about the coming apocalypse. Rick is hurt by these words and explains why he became a leader. Rick says that after uniting with Hilltop, they will have a huge army of two hundred people, and then they can stop surviving and start living.

Something To Fear / Reason for Fear (97-102)

People are worried about the group not returning. Abraham comes to visit Eugene, and he tells how and where you can get things to make cartridges. Rick and the people are attacked by Negan's gang. The group kills all but one so that he can pass on the information that the Hilltop community is now under Rick's protection. The group returns and Maggie reveals that she is pregnant. Abraham and Eugene go into town to get their things. While discussing Eugene and Rosita's relationship, Abraham and Eugene are attacked by unknown Saviors who have been secretly following them all the way. Abraham is killed, and Eugene is taken hostage by one of Negan's men, Dwight.

Carl discovers his father and Andrea naked in bed together. Suddenly, Dwight visits the community. He, threatening to kill Eugene, demands that Rick let his people into Alexandria. At this point, Eugene bites off Dwight's scrotum, giving Rick's group a chance to attack the disoriented attackers. Dwight and his men retreat. Eugene and Rosita mourn Abraham together. Glenn, believing Alexandria to be no longer safe, decides to move with Maggie and Sophia to Hilltop. After Abraham's funeral, Rick decides to meet with Gregory again and discuss the current situation with him, and at the same time transport Glenn and his family there.

They take a minibus onto the streets of Washington, where they are ambushed by the Saviors led by Negan. Negan decides to kill one of the members of Rick's group, thereby avenging the recently lost people. He wants to choose a victim with the help of a counting rhyme and his bat, to which he gave the name “Lucille.” The countdown ends with Glenn, and Negan beats him to death. In the end, he announces that he will return to Alexandria in a week and take half of the property from its residents. A furious Maggie hits Rick for not being able to do anything about it. Karl points a gun at her, but Sofia's intervention stops the conflict.

Rick's group reaches Hilltop. In a conversation with Gregory, who is more concerned about whether the "Saviors" found out about the agreement between them, it turns out that none of his people even knew about Negan's existence. Leaving Maggie and Sofia at Hilltop and taking Jesus with him, Rick returns to Alexandria. Returning, Rick finds the entrance to Alexandria covered with corpses and cars of the “Saviors”. Nicholas, who arrived to meet the group, assures that during the attack not a single person was injured, that the aggressors only managed to break the gate. Andrea takes Rick to one of the captured Saviors, Dwight.

Unexpectedly for everyone, the next day Rick decides to release the marauder, because he is tired of suffering losses among the people dear to him. As the people who see Rick's status as a leader noticeably waning (including Carl, Andrea and Michonne) disperse, Rick tells Jesus to follow Dwight and find out the whereabouts of the Saviors.

What Comes After / What comes next (103-108)

While Jesus follows Dwight, Negan's company arrives in Alexandria along with himself. Rick has to open the gate and let them inside. Negan's gang goes into every house and takes whatever they want. Negan personally lets Rick hold his bat, thereby leaving him without a weapon. But realizing that his people could harm the residents of the city, Rick just stands there and does not try to kill him. As the gang loads their "loot" into a van, Negan gets into one of them and drives off. At this time, Rick returns home and does not find Carl.

Jesus is discovered and Dwight takes him to Negan's base. But Jesus manages to escape unnoticed. As the Saviors unload the van, they notice Carl, who has secretly entered the Saviors' van with Abraham's machine gun. He kills several "Saviors". But Dwight, who arrived at the unloading site, manages to disarm the guy. Negan shows his possessions to Carl, as well as his "wives". Negan says that if he liked some girl in society, he “takes her as his wife,” and then rapes her to his heart’s content. After the tour, Negan brings Carl to his room and begins asking him questions related to the past. He asks Carl to take off the bandage (this is how the disfigured part of Carl's face is shown for the first time), and when Negan is brought a bat, he asks Carl to sing her a song. Communication is interrupted by a message from one of his subordinates that a certain Mark is ready. Negan says that if his new "wife" has a lover, Negan burns half his face, showing that new girl is now completely at Negan's mercy. Negan publicly burns the tied up guy's face and then takes Carl to talk about his plans for the future. One of Negan’s “wives”, Sherry, tries to apologize to Dwight, with whom the same situation as Mark had previously happened, but he does not want to listen to her. During a conversation with Negan, Carl begins to threaten him, but this only amuses Negan, and he says that he does not yet know what he will do with Carl, but he will definitely come up with something.

At this time, Jesus appears in Alexandria and tells Rick about what is happening. Jesus says that he has not seen Karl, but he can guess where he is. The group, led by Rick, head to the Saviors' hideout, but on the way they stumble upon Negan and his people. Negan admits that he has Carl, and he wants Rick to see what happened to his son. Rick can't stand it and starts a fight with him, but it turns out that Negan didn't do anything with Carl. He returns the boy safe and sound. Rick decides to reconsider the agreement with the Saviors.

The group returns home. Having received new details from Carl about the Saviors and their base, Jesus invites Rick to meet with a certain Ezekiel. Carl is almost killed by a walker in the courtyard while he and Michonne were cleaning up the area around Alexandria, but Michonne saves him in time. Carl admits that it is very difficult for him without an eye, and Michonne calms him down, saying that Rick does not have an arm and yet he does an excellent job at his job. Spencer prays to God to give him strength to do what “must be done.”

Rick and Jesus head to Ezekiel. On the bridge they meet his people, and they lead them to the “Kingdom”. Rick meets Ezekiel, the leader of the "Kingdom", who has a huge tigress named Shiva. What surprises Rick and Jesus is that Dwight appears in the community. He claims that he serves Negan for the sake of his wife, Sherry, whom he promised to kill if Dwight did not obey. Dwight promises Rick to help him kill Negan.

March to War / Path to war (109-114)

The action moves to Hilltop. At Glenn's grave, Maggie meets an African-American woman named Brianna, who tells her about some of Gregory's vices. Maggie soon becomes convinced of this when Gregory unceremoniously enters the doctor's office where she is being examined. Later, entering her house with the rowdy Sofia, Maggie meets Jesus there, who initiates her into Rick’s plans and asks her only to keep an eye on Gregory, as he feels distrustful. Then Jesus goes to the wall, where he asks a watchman named Cal to help select a reliable team, saying that among Negan's people they have an accomplice.

Meanwhile, Rick finally calls X-hour to the delight of Andrea and Carl, but Michonne refuses to fight. She is unhappy that Rick did not tell her what he was up to and she does not expect success.

Jesus and Maggie go to the blacksmith Earl to ask him for a bladed weapon. From Earl, Jesus learns that Cal left the Hilltop, seemingly to check the surrounding area. Jesus feels that he has made a fatal mistake. He barely manages to intercept Cal and reason with him, and although he managed to call the saviors, Jesus has difficulty persuading them that everything is okay.

Meanwhile, Rick, Andrea, Michonne, Heath and Carl arrive in the Kingdom. King Ezekiel meets them and secludes himself with Michonne at the first opportunity.

At this time, Negan arrives in Alexandria. While his men are collecting tribute, Spencer approaches Negan and offers him to eliminate Rick in exchange for the leadership position. The proposal angers Negan and he cuts Spencer's stomach with a knife. Returning Rick learns about what happened and, although Negan explained to him what Spencer wanted, Rick takes a fatal step. Deciding that there are as many people with Negan as he sees, Rick sends Andrea to the bell tower and, when the tribute truck leaves Alexandria, organizes an ambush on him. However, he underestimates Negan and ends up falling into a trap. Negan is talking to Rick with a threatening reproach when Carl shoots at him from behind the fence and hits Lucille. An enraged Negan wants to kill Carl and three of Rick's people who find themselves on the same side of the barricades with him.

Connor, one of the Saviors, climbs up the tower with Andrea, and after a long and difficult struggle she throws him down. Rick and the others are saved by Jesus and Ezekiel and Shiva who appear in time. Negan and his surviving companions barely escape. Later, Rick and Jesus discuss a plan to attack the Savior base, and at this time, enraged by his defeat, Negan announces to his people that war has begun.

All Out War - Part One / General War - Part 1 (115-120)

Rick and the militia army approach the walls of the Saviors' residence. They take Negan by surprise, but unexpectedly for the alliance, Gregory appears on the wall of the fence and announces that Hilltop is going over to Negan's side. Negan calls on the militia to disperse, but only a few show cowardice, which infuriates Negan, he pushes Gregory off the balcony for not controlling his people and starts a shootout. Rick and his men return fire, with the main target being the windows in the buildings, not Negan's snipers. Shooting attracts the attention of walkers. Seeing this, Rick orders his people to retreat, and he himself is going to ram the fence around Negan’s plant in a pickup truck and lure walkers to it. However, Holly is ahead of him, eager to avenge Abraham. She breaks through the fence in a car, letting walkers into the resulting gap, but does not have time to get out herself and falls into the hands of Negan. Rick and the others retreat safely, but it’s too early to rejoice - the war has just begun. In the meantime, Negan and his company realize that they are trapped - his factory was surrounded by a dense herd, attracted by the noise of the battle. While Negan is looking for a way out of this situation, one of his henchmen, David, decides to take advantage of the moment and rape the captive Holly. Negan harshly suppresses this attempt and kills the presumptuous subordinate. At this time, Rick and Jesus successfully attack one of the Savior outposts, although Eric dies in battle. Ezekiel and his men attack another post, but the Saviors fend off his group's attack. However, they are immediately attacked by walkers. Ezekiel, having lost all his people, tries to escape from the zombie encirclement. Shiva saves him at the cost of his own life. The latter deprives the king of his presence of mind and instead of the Kingdom, he comes to Alexandria to find consolation from Michonne. She soon gets tired of his snot and harshly demands that he pull himself together. Rick returns with his fighters and, having learned that Ezekiel failed, immediately realizes that there is someone to help Negan escape from the trap, so he calls on his friends to prepare for the visit of guests. They just don’t keep you waiting. Negan throws a grenade into Alexandria, the explosion of which destroys the wall of a nearby house, and then demands that Rick be given to him. When he appears, Negan pulls a bound Holly from his truck with a bag over her head and demands negotiations. Rick agrees to start them only when Holly is on his territory. Negan lets her go and she goes to the gate with a bag on her head. When she enters, Dr. Cloyd removes her bag and the zombie-turned Holly bites her on the arm. Rick and the others are distracted from the Saviors. Negan, taking advantage of this, gives the order to attack and Alexandria is bombarded with grenades. One of them explodes near Heath as he runs to help Denise and tears off his left leg. Jesus manages to throw one of the grenades back, where it explodes causing confusion among the attackers. Dwight, who finds himself there, takes advantage of this and shoots his companions, proving his intentions to Jesus, who was watching. However, the bombing becomes more and more intense. Unexpectedly, Hilltop fighters led by Maggie come to the rescue. Having been hit from behind, Negan retreats, but he does not consider himself a loser.

All Out War - Part Two / General War - Part 2 (121-126)

Eugene and his assistants hear the sound of battle in their workshop outside Alexandria. Realizing that walkers might be coming in response to the sounds, Eugene reminds them to be careful, but one of the workers, not understanding the warning, goes out to relieve himself and gets caught in the teeth of a dead man lurking on the street. His kin burst into the workshop, forcing Eugene and his team to leave the building. On the street, everyone is immediately captured by Negan. Meanwhile, Rick and the others are counting their losses. Ezekiel and the remnants of his people are about to return to the Kingdom. Maggie returns to Hilltop. Residents of Alexandria, having buried the dead, including Holly and Denise, who died from her bite, decide to go there. Jesus, having guessed Eugene's fate, argues with Rick, but he does not consider it practical to waste his energy. Meanwhile, Negan is in his lair trying to lure the bound Eugene to his side.

Former residents of Alexandria and the Kingdom are settling into Hilltop. Meanwhile, at the Saviors' lair, Dwight meets with the captive Eugene and informs him of his role in the confrontation between Negan and Rick. He is ready to help Eugene and his comrades, but he does not believe him. Carson accidentally overhears the conversation. But he reassures Dwight that he, too, is not happy with Negan and does not want to one day get a hot iron in the face, there are other saviors who do not like Negan’s power, but for now this is all in words.

On the street, Negan and the rest of the saviors dirty their weapons on the walkers tied to the fence, hoping to make the slightest use fatal.

In Hilltop, Rick visits the blacksmith Earl and asks him to come up with some kind of prosthetic for his right arm. Here some details of Jesus’ personal life are revealed.

Saviors are approaching Hilltop. They wait until sunset to attack.

The Saviors prepare to attack Hilltop. Meanwhile, Carson frees Eugene and company. At Hilltop, Sofia meets Karl, he is rude to her and she leaves to join her new friends. Hilltop is attacked by the Saviors. Cal dies under the first shots. Negan orders Hilltop to surrender. After disobeying, he breaks down the gate and begins the attack. During the attack, Negan and Dwight get behind Rick and the group. Negan orders Dwight to shoot Rick with an arrow covered in walker flesh. Dwight complies and Rick falls unconscious.

Under cover of darkness, Carson smuggles Eugene and his comrades out of the Saviors' base. On the way to Hilltop, their car is ambushed by a rescue sniper perched on the roof of one of the houses and gets stuck among walkers staggering along the dark street. Nevertheless, Eugene manages to outwit the shooter and, with everyone else, catch him in his own ambush. After a short conversation, the embittered Eugene pushes the savior off the roof to be devoured by the dead, after which he and his companions remain on the roof waiting for dawn.

Meanwhile, at Hilltop, Nicholas and Jesus lead an injured Rick to safety, berating himself for allowing Dwight to fool them so much. Suddenly, right at the porch of the mansion, all three are attacked by saviors. Nicholas gets hit on the back with a machete. Jesus rushes into battle, and Karl and Gregory, who has begun to reform, run out onto the porch and drag Rick inside. But then Negan appears with a large group of his fighters, full of intentions to kill everyone who took refuge in the mansion. But Michonne and Ezekiel already know what to do. They turn on the car's headlights, illuminating the attackers. Andrea's shooters, who are perched at the top, immediately shoot the blinded saviors. Negan and the others retreat from Hilltop.

In the morning, Dr. Carson discovers deteriorating health in people, including Nicholas, who received seemingly harmless stab wounds. The mystery is soon resolved - Jesus and Michonne, driving out the walkers who wandered into the Hilltop, attracted by the noise of the battle, find knives defended by the saviors with blades stained with the blood of the dead. And now the wounded are facing imminent death from blood poisoning.

Not far from the Hilltop, Negan is camped and awaits the results of his biological sabotage.

The Saviors learn that the prisoners have escaped, but Negan doesn't care. At this time, Nicholas dies in Hilltop. Eugene and the others arrive at Hilltop and find Jesus and Michonne fighting zombies. Rick tells his friends about his plan. The Saviors approach the Hilltop and Negan orders Rick's men to surrender. Rick comes out to talk to him. He starts talking about an alliance between communities. Negan seriously thinks about this. Rick, choosing the moment, only manages to scratch him with a knife.

After being wounded by Rick, Negan is lost. Taking advantage of this, Rick appeals to the Saviors for peace. At this moment, Negan, having come to his senses, attacks Rick and, despite being wounded, puts up a brutal fight in which he manages to break his opponent’s leg. At the same time, the saviors are attacked from the rear by King Ezekiel, Michonne and Jesus. Dwight quietly kills his distracted accomplices. Meanwhile, Andrea shoots down Negan, who is ready to kill Rick. Taking advantage of this, Dwight picks up Lucille and, declaring himself the new leader of the Saviors, calls for an end to the bloodshed. The saviors leave. At Rick's request, Dr. Carson treats the injured Negan. Later, deciding his fate, Andrea calls for Negan to be publicly executed, Carl supports her, but Rick rejects the proposal to execute Negan, believing that they should be above this. Walking out on a crutch to the residents of Hilltop, Alexandria, the Kingdom and the remaining Saviors, Rick proclaims the rebirth of a civilization better than what it was. Michonne then helps Rick onto the bed. They discuss returning to Alexandria, Michonne and Ezekiel's relationship, and Rick's abilities as a leader. The conversation is interrupted by Andrea, who is looking for Carla. Realizing that his son might do something stupid, Rick, with the help of the women, gets up and goes to the infirmary, where he finds Carl with a gun over Negan, who is chained to a bed. Having convinced his son that killing Negan means stooping to his level and that he will be punished, but in a civilized manner, Rick sends Carl away while he waits for Negan to wake up. And when this happens, Rick explains why he saved Negan’s life. He promises to send him to jail for the rest of his life.

A New Beginning / A New Beginning (127-132)

A group of survivors led by a woman named Magna, escaping from a dense herd of walkers, encounters Jesus with a detachment of Alexandrians. With their help, Magna manages to save her people except one guy, after which Jesus takes them to Alexandria. About two years have passed since the general war. Rick was given a simple prosthetic arm; he still limps because his broken leg has not recovered. He has a stronger relationship with Andrea, who even became a mother to Carl. Peaceful life is slowly getting better, the survivors even periodically hold fairs in their settlements. The main villain from the past, Negan, is imprisoned in the basement of Rick and Andrea's house. From time to time, Karl drops in to see him, who still longs for his death, but so far only has heart-warming conversations with the former leader of the Saviors.

Negan, as Carl leaves, tells him that he was shocked by his answer. He thought that after a long time, after all the heart-to-heart conversations, Karl considered him his friend.

Rick and Eugene stop by the mill on their way to the munitions factory. Rick asks about Rosita. Eugene responds to Rick about how he feels uneasy about Rosita's love for him. Walking inside with Eugene, Rick hears Olivia say that the batch of bread is almost ready. Rick is glad to smell bread again. Eugene replies that things are going well and that he might speed up production. Rick, after Eugene’s words, says that they have no idea about the value of bread. After finishing the conversation, Rick heard Eugene say that he needed to go to the military factory. After saying goodbye to Olivia, Rick sees Mikey. Rick is happy to see him and asks him how he likes working at the mill. Finding out that Mikey wants his father to be proud of him. Rick thanks him and leaves with Eugene.

Andrea asks Magna questions, taking notes in a notebook. Magna, answering Andrea’s questions, reproaches him for the need for the necessary details and trust in them. After hearing Andrea's answer about this, Magna talks about where she is from and how she survived with the group.

Josh comes to visit Carl. Passing by his father's room, Carl does not show Rick's bedroom, which Josh asked to see. Carl moves on and takes Josh to his room. Josh is surprised by Carl's cutouts and asks him to make a unicorn for Wendy. Karl agrees to make a figurine for a sweatshirt.

After touring the military factory, Rick and Eugene go home. Eugene, arriving at his house, sees Rosita's note. Rick goes home with Andrea to share what he saw, but notices Karl on the steps to the house. Carl expresses his pain to Rick. Rick, understanding and having made a decision, says that he can study blacksmithing at Hilltop.

Arriving at the house where the group was placed, Magna, along with Luke, Yumiko, Kelly and Connie, talk about trust in them and further actions taken.

Ken and Marco are galloping after the horses. Having galloped far, Ken does not notice the walker and falls along with the horse. Marco kills the walker and helps Ken get out. Then, he helps to climb onto his horse and they ride on.

Karl is getting ready to go. Andrea comes into his room, she asks him if everything is okay and if he is worried. Carl replies that he is not worried and says that he is surprised because he had a lot of things. To which Andrea tells him not to take all his things, since he may return soon, but with his wife and children.

Negan reasons that his imprisonment isn't all bad, as Rick cleans his closet. Rick objects, saying that others do it. As Rick hands Negan the food, the former leader notices that he was given freshly baked bread and says that Rick is preparing everything for his reign, since he does not intend to stay in prison forever. To which Rick rudely but calmly humiliates him and says that he will remain there for the rest of his life.

Before leaving, Carl stops by to see Josh and gives him the unicorn. Josh was surprised that Carl made it so quickly and said his mom hasn't started making him a sweatshirt yet.

Magna meets Rick coming out of prison and says that all the buildings here are the same, at the same time asking what kind of building it is. To which Rick replies that this is a prison. Magna, greatly surprised, begins to ask Rick about her and asks permission to visit the prison. Rick, answering questions, says that there is only one prisoner there and his sentence is for life, and also says that Magna will be able to visit the prison, but only with Rick, and since he is leaving now, then only after returning.

Karl says goodbye to everyone. Jesus gives a note to Karl for Alex and Anna gives him a note, but only for Karl to read.

Rick begins to ask his son about Anna, to which Carl brushes off the whole way. But when they stop for a snack, Karl still tells his father about Anna, but suddenly walkers come out of the forest. Rick tells his son to get the gun, but not to shoot, and that his father can handle it himself. Rick does not have time to deal with everyone due to his injury and Carl has to shoot at the walkers. After killing the dead, a sentry approaches them. Rick asks why his area was not secured, to which he responds with an apology. Rick suddenly loses his temper, starts hitting the sentry on the head with his cane, explaining that this is the main road, and that it must be protected, and that he and his son could have died. The sentry, completely terrified, apologizes again. Rick calms down and climbs into the wagon.

Ken and Marco are riding the same horse. Soon Ken falls from it, Marco, jumping off the horse, picks up his friend, but the horse runs away and they have to walk, and walkers are already starting to overtake them.

Magna and his group make their way into the prison, where they find Negan, who begins to scream that the people in Alexandria are monsters and thanks God that these people came to save him.

Eloquence does not help Negan, and Magna and her companions leave, leaving the prisoner alone. Meanwhile, Rick and Carl arrive at Hilltop, where Rick, to his displeasure, discovers that a cult is being created around him, and far from the village, two watchmen Mark and Ken are trying to escape from a crowd of walkers.

Carl is settling into his new place of residence, Rick and Maggie are discussing trading matters when a message arrives about Mark's appearance. The exhausted watchman is taken to the infirmary, where the delirious guy says that he was forced to leave his comrade, and most importantly, he heard “dead men talking”...

Rick and Maggie talk to a distraught Marco, who said the walkers were whispering. Meanwhile, two bullies beat up a boy named Brian, however, he is saved by none other than Sofia, but accidentally hits Carl.

Louis, Dante and Larry are talking when Maggie comes up to them and takes Dante away. Maggie persuades Dante to go after Ken, who is left alone in the forest.

Later at the fair, Sofia meets the same bullies who beat up Brian. Karl gives the letter to Alex. Earl invites Carl to join him for the meal, but Carl refuses. Earl begins to worry about him. Carl tells Earl why he is so sad - he was late for work as an apprentice and is no longer needed by him (Earl), but Earl said that there could be two apprentices and a joyful Carl told Rick that everything was settled. Later they start talking about a house for Carl - whether he still wants to rent from the Barrington family or wants his own house. Rick asks about the letter Anna gave him and if he read it, but Carl only answers two words: “Not today” and explains why.

Meanwhile, Dante and his friends are talking about Maggie. Dante and his group enter the barn, where they found Marco's hat and heard strange noises, but it was a crowd of walkers.

Karl moves to a new house and meets Sofia, who offers to help him, but Karl says that he can handle it himself. Sofia is happy that Carl is moving to Hilltop. Rick asks Maggie if she's okay, but she tells him in the words of Shakespeare. Rick says he misses Michonne, who left for the Kingdom.

Andrea tells Eugene that Rosita loves him, but he doubts it. Andrea enters the house where Magna, Yumiko, Connie, Kelly and Luke attack her and ask her questions.

Magna, along with Luke, Kelly, Yumiko and Connie, aggressively demand from Andrea answers to all their questions. Andrea responds by saying that no one would survive if something happened to her.

Rick, Carl, Maggie, Sofia and little Hershel watch the sunset at Hilltop.

Dante, Doug and their partner fight off dozens of zombies. Suddenly a dead man rushes at them with a knife in his hand. Dante's partners rush to their heels, they are overtaken by the armed dead and killed. Dante is left alone with the dead, who begin to speak for the first time. Dante kills a couple of talking dead people. He decides to examine their bodies and discovers that the rotten skin is just a mask under which ordinary people were hiding. At this moment, the shotgun of another “whisperer” rests on the back of his head.

Whispers into Screams / Whispers turning into screams (133-138)

Carl wakes up in Hilltop and finally decides to read the letter Anna gave him. In the letter, the girl apologizes for lifting her T-shirt and showing her breasts, which embarrassed Karl. Anna writes that she values her friendship with Karl and finds him cute, and his departure broke her heart. She asks for a reply letter and claims that she will miss him. Satisfied with what he read, Karl hides the letter in the chest of drawers.

Meanwhile, in Alexandria, Andrea communicates with Magna's group, who have decided to conduct an interrogation. However, Andrea managed to soften their mood; answers to questions developed into a friendly conversation that lasted until the morning. Andrea told the new arrivals how Carl had lost his eye, and how Negan's capture helped solidify Rick as leader of Alexandria by demonstrating the rule of law. According to her, the Saviors, led by Dwight, easily integrated into the new community after getting rid of Negan. Now the Saviors guard the trade routes of the communities.

In the morning, Jesus checks to see if Andrea is okay and, seeing Magna's group, grabs his sword. Andrea calms him down and sends him out.

Rosita apologizes to Eugene for her romantic interest, which resulted in her becoming pregnant. According to Rosita, she does not love the child's father, and he does not love her. Eugene offers not to tell anything and promises to raise the baby as his own. Rosita tearfully thanks Eugene.

Rick and Carl say goodbye, Carl gives his father a letter, presumably for Anna. Rick leaves Hilltop in a wagon. Carl forges his first spearhead in the forge and receives the praise of his mentor, Earl. After work, Karl meets Sofia, who invites him to dinner. Karl preens himself and together they go to a barbecue. Brianna and Maggie discuss Sophia and Carl's budding romance.

The “Whisperer,” who captured Dante, interrogates him and claims that there are many of them, and people have invaded their lands, so they will be killed.

Jesus learns from Darius that patrolman Nathaniel has not yet returned from the raid. A group from Alexandria consisting of four people goes on a search. Jesus' squad enters a remote, little-explored area. It turns out that Nathaniel often went out between patrols in search of various things. For example, one day he came across baseball cards in one of the houses. Meanwhile, a group of "whisperers" are pursuing the horsemen and are about to attack when they stop. Desperate to find Nathaniel and stopping at the barn, Jesus' group decides to return. At this moment, Darius is attacked by the “talking dead”, cutting him to pieces with knives. They attack two other patrolmen as well. With the words “And now you too will die,” one of the “whisperers” rushes at Jesus.

Jesus manages to fight off the dead and those who pretend to be them. He saves his wounded partner, moreover, Jesus even manages to neutralize and capture the leader of the “talking dead”, after which he, along with the wounded man and the captive, goes back to Hilltop.

Meanwhile, in Hilltop, Karl and Sofia, who have secluded themselves, are attacked by two hooligans, they beat Karl, and then begin to mock Sofia, taking revenge on her for protecting Brian. Suddenly, Karl pounces on the hooligans and beats them both with a shovel, very possibly to death.

Jesus comes to Hilltop. The wounded man is sent for treatment, the captive is sent for interrogation, but Jesus and Maggie do not have time to find out anything. Karl and Sofia appear and tell them about what happened to them.

At Hilltop, after a fight with some bullies, Carl and Sofia head to see Maggie. Sofia loses consciousness and is taken to Dr. Carson. The doctor assumes that Sofia has a concussion, but reassures her that everything will be fine.

Parents of hooligans burst into the hospital, dragging their injured sons on a tarpaulin - they are unconscious. Karl tries to justify himself, but he is called a monster and accused of attempted murder. They insist that the bullies were simply defending themselves and that Sofia and Karl attacked them. Maggie tries to calm everyone down and prevents them from starting a fight. Angry parents demand Carl's arrest and preferences for themselves - equipment for trailers, non-participation in patrols outside the Hilltop.

Jesus interrogates a captive of the “whisperers.” The girl says that her name is Lydia and that she is 16 years old. Explains that the skin of the dead protects the whisperers from the walkers and even helps them coexist. Jesus suggests that the Whisperers don't have many people if they send children to the vanguard. Lydia explains that in their group there is no concept of “childhood.”

Maggie takes Carl to prison. It’s not easy for her to do this, the guy is outraged, but Maggie explains to him the rules: in the new society no one kills anyone. Even Rick spared Negan, and Carl, although defending himself, went too far. Maggie asks you to trust her.

As Maggie and Carl pass by the cell where Jesus is being interrogated, Lydia notices Carl. Maggie and Jesus leave to discuss the appearance of the Whisperers. Lydia and Karl find themselves in neighboring cells, they strike up an acquaintance.

Meanwhile, the parents of the bullies, who appear to be quite marginal, express their dissatisfaction with Maggie's management. Gregory suggests killing her.

At Hilltop, Gregory tries to convince Tammy and the other parents of the bullies, who were hospitalized after attacking Carl and Sophia, that it is necessary to kill Maggie. Gregory wants to take her place. They tell him that these measures are too radical.

Marco tells Maggie and Jesus how he and Ken were pursued by the Whisperers. Jesus tells him what they know about the new group. He assumes that there are many Whisperers, since their attacks occurred far from each other.

Karl talks through the wall in prison with Lydia. Karl explains to her the rules in their group, says that they do not kill criminals. Lydia is surprised by this. Lydia reveals that this was her first foray with the Whisperers and that she helped kill. Karl assures that she will not be killed and offers to help the survivors by telling about the Whisperers.

Sofia wakes up in the hospital. She tells Maggie how the bullies attacked them. Maggie becomes convinced that her story and Carl's story match and decides to free Carl. In the next room, hooligans lie unconscious. Karl asks Maggie to release Lydia too, but she is against it. She agrees only to untie Lydia. Carl brings her his lucky hat.

Jesus visits Darius in the hospital. Carson says Darius' injuries aren't too bad. Alex appears. He kisses Jesus and says they can be friends.

Hilltop is being watched by two Whisperers. They are waiting for their leader.

In Alexandria, Andrea and Magna are harvesting corn and discussing how they have plenty of food. A sad Eugene walks by. Rick returns and Andrea throws herself on his neck.

Carl talks to Earl. He says that the incident with the hooligans will not affect their relationship. One of the bullies' parents is watching them. He comes to Gregory and says that he is ready to support Maggie's murder. He offers to kill Karl as well.

At Hilltop, Carl communicates through a door with Lydia, who is locked in a prison cell. He convinces Maggie and Jesus, who have approached, that she can be released. Lydia refuses to communicate with them.

Alex tells Maggie that the bullies at the hospital have come to their senses. At the hospital, Tammy yells at Maggie for letting Carl out. Maggie suggests that the dissatisfied change their place of residence. Gregory tries to calm the quarrel and invites Maggie to come to him, promising a solution to the problem. Carson asks Maggie where his brother is. Jesus tells her that he was unable to get answers from Lydia.

Sofia gives Karl his glasses and thanks him for saving him. In agreement with Maggie, Carl releases Lydia and tells her that she is released under his responsibility and if she tries to harm anyone, he will kill her. This scares Lydia a little. He shows her around. Lydia says that the Whisperers eat berries and mushrooms, hunt, and sometimes share their prey with zombies, but they never kill people for food. Carl explains to her the principles of life in the Hilltop. At the chicken coop, on the grass, Lydia invites him to have sex, he agrees.

Maggie comes to Gregory. He offers her a glass of wine, Maggie agrees. Gregory puts poison in her glass. At first he says that there is no need to kick Tammy and the others out, but after the poison affects Maggie, he declares that Hilltop is his city. Jesus appears at the door.

At Hilltop, Jesus catches Gregory red-handed. Fortunately, the poison either turned out to be weak, or Maggie’s body turned out to be stronger than the conspirator expected, nevertheless, the woman escaped with fainting, and grief - the poisoner went to jail.

Karl spends time with Lydia and she admits to him that she does not want to return back to the Whisperers. But they come themselves to the gates of Hilltop. Their leader turns out to be a bald-shaven woman who introduces herself as Alpha. Alpha informs Maggie who came to the negotiations that she is Lydia’s mother and demands the return of the girl, offering in exchange to give up Dante and Ken, who were previously captured, and at the same time to delimit the spheres of habitat. Maggie isn't going to take any chances and gets Lydia out of the Hilltop despite Carl's protests. Having received her daughter back, Alpha forbids the girl to call her mother, demanding that she be addressed only by her first name. Later Maggie questions former prisoners what those know. Dante says that he was in a closed tent the whole time and did not see them, but by the sounds he determined that there were thousands of them. The Whisperers took good care of them. Sofia goes to look for Carl, but does not find him, as he went outside the Hilltop to save his new girlfriend.

Life And Death / Life and Death (139-144)

A small group from the Kingdom makes their way to shore. It is led by Ezekiel, who has fun killing zombies with Michonne's sword. At the dock, they meet a group from Alexandria, including Rick, Heath, Aaron and Magna. Rick tells Ezekiel that thanks to production they have a lot of bullets and they are going to clear the coast of walkers. Ezekiel hints that the price of bullets should be lowered, and Rick responds rather harshly, but then softens.

A sailboat approaches the shore. Ezekiel begins to worry. Michonne appears on board the ship. She is cold to Ezekiel, but friendly to Rick. Pete says the catch was very successful. Michonne wonders who Magna is and says that she likes to go to sea to fish, because at sea you have to work a lot and there is no time for different thoughts. She admits to Rick that she left Ezekiel because “she couldn’t live like this anymore,” and says that before the apocalypse she had daughters, whom she left with her husband Dominic, and she devoted herself entirely to work. Now they are most likely dead, and it eats at her. That's why she left Ezekiel because she doesn't think she deserves to be happy. Rick says that's not true and asks Michonne to come home.

Carl's disappearance is discovered at Hilltop. Brianna assumes that Carl is just hiding, but Jesus replies that Carl skipped breakfast and lunch. Sofia notes that Karl is brave, so he went behind the wall, and Dante tries to joke that Karl went after Lydia, since she is his first girlfriend. Maggie says that because of what Carl did, they could have very big problems with the Whisperers.

Karl is sitting in the forest under a tree. Alpha approaches him with the whisperers. Karl explains that he is following them of his own accord and that no one sent him, and that he wants to make sure that Lydia is okay. Although he pulls a gun on Alpha, she eventually invites him to join the Whisperers.

Michonne doesn't want to return to Alexandria or the Kingdom. Rick, having failed to convince her, prepares to leave.

Meanwhile, at Hilltop, Dr. Carson is interrogating Gregory. He makes excuses in every possible way and shifts his blame onto others, including Maggie herself, who is present during the interrogation and in the end directly accuses Gregory of attempting to commit suicide. Later, in a conversation with Jesus, weighing all her options, Maggie is inclined to execute Gregory. She also understands that she will have to punish his accomplices - the families of teenagers crippled by Karl, since they knew about Gregory’s plan, but did not take action to stop him.

And Karl, not thinking about the worries caused by his departure, together with Lydia ends up in a large camp of the Whisperers, where there are many dozens of people, there are cows and horses.

Meanwhile, in Alexandria, Andrea and Olivia gave Negan a bath, washing and shaving him. He is then forced back into his cell. When the women leave, Negan leans on the bars, they open...

Rick returns with the group to Alexandria. Dwight is waiting for him at the gate. He tells Rick that Sherry left him. Dwight complains to Rick that the leader's burden is too heavy and asks Rick to free him from it. Rick replies that he cannot appoint a new leader for the Saviors - they must choose one themselves.

In Alexandria, Rick goes down to Negan's basement and finds him sitting in an open cell. However, Negan makes no attempt to escape and allows Rick to lock him up. He tells Rick that he didn't run away so they can build trust. Naturally, Rick thinks this is nonsense.

Rosita announces to everyone that she and Eugene are having a baby. Rick finds Olivia and chastises her for not checking the lock on Negan's cage. This upsets Olivia greatly and she leaves in tears. Andrea tells Rick that they must kill Negan, but Rick refuses, noting that he is taking the right path, not the easy one.

Meanwhile, at Hilltop, Maggie and the rest of the community hang Gregory. The community is shocked by Gregory's execution.

After Gregory is hanged, Maggie tries to convince the rest of the Hilltop residents that she didn't want to do this, but was forced to. Maggie expresses hope that the rest of the community will cooperate for the common good. Her speech does not meet with support.

Alexandria is preparing for a fair, which will also include the residents of Hilltop and the Kingdom. Andrea discusses preparations with Siddiq. Seeing the work in full swing, Andrea sheds a tear.

Meanwhile, Karl gets acquainted with the life of the Whisperers. Before his eyes, they skin the dead man and offer it to Lydia. Alpha explains to him that the animal lifestyle is their way of surviving, and then asks Carl about how he and his friends survived. Karl replies that his father helped him. Karl again rejects the offer to return and convey to Maggie the requirement to maintain neutrality, as he is worried about Lydia, which surprises Alpha. He implies that Lydia was raped by Whisperer men.

Jesus, Dante, Brianna, Maggie and their children Sophia and Hershel travel to Alexandria. Maggie tells Rick about the Whisperers and that they have Carl. Rick, outraged that he was only now told about this, saddles his horse to go in search. Andrea, Dante, who hopes to gain Meggie’s favor, and Michonne, who has arrived in Alexandria, volunteer to go with him. Meanwhile, Alpha, under the guise of a buyer, talks with the blacksmith Earl at his shop with tools and weapons.

At the fair in Alexandria, having met Earl Sutton, the leader of the Whisperers Alpha leaves, and at this time Ezekiel approaches him, interested in the affairs of the blacksmith, noticing something wrong in him. Earl tells him that the woman was a little strange. Soon Ezekiel finds Pete and is also interested in his affairs. Pete replies that everything is fine with him and when asked: “Where is the boat?”, he replies that several of his guys are watching it, also adding that Michonne is also at the fair. Ezekiel begins to feel out of place, but Pete tells him that Michonne lacks the femininity to confess her love to him. Having perked up, the king thanks his friend by hugging him. And, presumably, he leaves to look for her.

Meanwhile, Rick's group, consisting of Andrea, Michonne and Dante, walks through the suburbs, heading for Carl. Dante says that the Whisperers' lair is already far away. Rick apologizes to him for being harsh with him. Dante understands him and says that when he was looking for Karl recently, he went quite far into foreign territory and got scared. Michonne tells him to control himself. Dante also says that they are very dangerous and can hardly be called human. But Rick remains hopeful that his son is okay. But then several whisperers appear, one of whom says that Rick's son is quite useful to them. The elder Grimes pulls out a pistol and orders him to be taken to Carl. The Whisperer says that he is not in a position to dictate terms, also saying that he will take only him alone to his son, and the rest will remain here.

Meanwhile, in Alexandria at the fair, Paul Monroe asks Maggie if she will tell Rick when he returns that they hanged Gregory. Greene replies that she has not avoided the topic and that she is responsible for everything that happens in Hilltop after they find out what happened to Carl. If something is bad, then the conversation will have to be postponed. Jesus encourages Maggie, saying that he doesn't know Carl as well as she does, but he has noticed that when he is alone, he becomes stronger. And Maggie replies with a smile that it sounded like he had known Carl for a long time.

At the Whisperers' camp, Grimes Jr. asks one of the Whisperers in a raised voice where his father is. Lydia tries to calm him down, telling him to stop screaming, because they shouldn't scream. The Whisperer tells Karl that he shouldn't know what the others are doing. But Karl does not back down, insisting on his own. Here Rick appears, accompanied by three whisperers. Rick says he scared the hell out of him, but doesn't hug him, asking where his glasses are. To which Karl replies that he no longer needs them.

Meanwhile, Rosita and Eugene are walking around the fair. Eugene says they don't need to buy any more clothes because they don't have enough space. But Espinoza can’t help it, saying that soon she won’t fit into any of her sweaters. And after the birth of the child, she will need an incentive to lose weight. But Eugene tells her that he will accept her for who she is, it is important for him that she be happy. Rosita says she's a terrible person and starts crying, she says she doesn't want to ruin his holiday and leaves crying. Porter goes to the store, asking how much he can buy the radio for. The seller replies that since it doesn’t work, then for a bottle of beer. Eugene agrees to this.

Rick asks Carl if he was harmed. Karl says no. Grimes Sr. says that at the first opportunity they will need to return to their own, since they are keeping Michonne and Andrea (he didn’t say anything about Dante). But Karl says that he will not leave Lydia and leave, offering to create a diversion. Rick can't leave him. But Karl replies: “This is my world, father, and he is watching over me.” Rick doesn't understand what he wants to tell him. Carl says that he sees that Rick is uncomfortable looking at him and wants to hide how Carl looks. Rick says now is not the time for this. Karl explains that Lydia is the only one who looks at him normally. Then Alpha appears, surrounded by whisperers, and Rick sees a bloody knife. She says she had to face some troubles along the way. Rick starts yelling at her, but is hit by one of the Whisperers. Alpha says they need to walk a bit. They climb onto an unfinished building and from the roof Alpha says that these are not empty threats, targeting Rick and forcing him to look at the crowd of thousands of walkers in the backyard.

Having intimidated Rick with a horde of the dead capable of wiping Alexandria and Hilltop from the face of the earth under the leadership of her people, Alpha rejects any proposals from Rick, demanding only one thing - not to meddle in the territory of the Whisperers. Rick demands that Carl come back with him, even if he has to drag him by the collar. Carl then tells Rick that Lydia is being sexually assaulted at camp. Rick demands an explanation from Alpha. She tells Rick that their community lives by new rules that are more suitable for the new world, while Rick is simply clinging to the past. Alpha says that Lydia is too weak for their community and invites her to leave with Rick.

Lydia, Carl and Rick return to the place where the latter left Dante, Andrea and Michonne, but they find only their horses there. After driving a little more, Rick discovers a long row of severed heads impaled on stakes - the border of the Whisperers' territory. The 12 zombie heads are Olivia, Josh, Carson, Tammy Rose, Luke, Erin, Ken, Amber, Louis, Oscar, Rosita Espinosa, Ezekiel. Relatives and friends of the murdered are trying to find them at a fair in Alexandria.

Soon, Andrea, Michonne and Dante approach the shocked Rick. Andrea asks what they will do now.

No way back / No way back (145-150)

The group is shocked. Michonne loses her composure, realizing that she missed her chance at happiness with Ezekiel. She takes out a knife to kill Ezekiel's zombified head, but Rick offers to do it for her. Michonne gets angry and pushes Rick away, but then runs into his arms, sobbing. Andrea takes the knife from Michonne, pierces Ezekiel's head and asks the others to help remove the heads from the pikes. Suddenly, Michonne lunges at Lydia, knocking her to the ground and demanding to know if Lydia knew about Alpha's murder plans. Michonne asks if the Whisperers have done this before. Karl takes out a gun. Dante tells Michonne to stop.

Lydia holds a knife to Michonne's throat and says she knew nothing about the murder plans. Lydia believes that Alpha is scared, because the Whisperers have never met such large groups before. Those they met either joined them or died. Michonne realizes that she lost her temper and lets go of Lydia, helping her up. She tells Carl to hide the gun, and he obeys. When asked what happened to the bodies of those killed, Lydia replies that they were probably skinned. The group decides to bury the heads where they found them. They leave sticks marking the boundaries of the Whisperers' domain. Michonne is unhappy with this, it seems to her that Rick does not want to take revenge on those who killed their friends. She says that if it were Carl or Andrea who were killed, he would probably have acted differently. Rick agrees with this.

Michonne runs off into the woods to be alone. Rick asks Andrea what she thinks should be done. Andrea says that, on the one hand, she wants to go back and kill all the Whisperers, but, on the other hand, she understands that this is recklessness. Rick replies that he understands that his people will want revenge. He worries that people will turn on him if he doesn't want to support their revenge. Dante heads over to Michonne to check on her, but Michonne responds with rudeness and then offers to join him in digging graves.

Lydia finds Carl crying - he discovered Josh's head. Karl explains to her that they were friends. Lydia sympathizes with him.

Rick and the others return to Alexandria. Everyone is already starting to worry when they discover that their family and friends are missing. Rick tells the crowd that he has some very bad news.

Residents of Alexandria and Hilltop are shocked by the mass execution. They mourn and demand revenge from Rick. Rick asks him to take his time and think things through carefully. Maggie and Rick begin to argue, then fight. They quickly make up and apologize to each other.

Eugene comes to Rick. He offers to use Lydia in the fight against the Whisperers, because Lydia is the daughter of their leader, Alpha.

After a conversation with Eugene, Rick and Andrea realize that Lydia's presence in Alexandria is undesirable, and decide to transport her and Carl to Hilltop. Andrea volunteers to escort the teenagers, and at night all three leave Alexandria. This is done in time, because some time later Michonne enters Rick’s house with a drawn sword for unclear purposes. Rick manages to notice her. Michonne explains that she wanted to take Lydia out of town herself. Rick and Michonne spend the rest of the night in the kitchen drinking and discussing their lives.

Meanwhile, Andrea and her companions meet a mounted guard named Gus at dawn. Andrea asks him not to tell anyone that they passed here. This makes Lydia worry. When the trio enters an abandoned factory, Lydia begins to panic, deciding that they want to give her to the whisperers. She points a gun at Andrea and demands an explanation.

Carl and Andrea explain to a frightened Lydia that what they are doing now is for her good.

Meanwhile, in the Whisperers' camp, Alpha cries, tormented by her conscience. One of her people, who happens to be nearby, consoles her, but she, in gratitude, cuts his throat so that there is no witness to her weakness.

Alexandria is uneasy. People thirst for revenge, riots begin, which can hardly be suppressed by the power of persuasion.

Realizing that he can’t do anything about the mood of the crowd, Rick decides to turn to Negan, who is in prison, for help.

In Alexandria, Rick comes to Negan to ask for leadership advice.

Dwight argues with Laura, one of the members of the Saviors group. Dwight says he is leaving and doesn't want to be a leader, Laura persuades him to stay. At the end of the conversation, she kisses Dwight.

Andrea, Carl Grimes and Lydia approach the Hilltop. Eduardo meets them. Andrea asks him not to talk about their arrival. Karl and Lydia talk alone. Lydia says that Karl is very good. He replies that he follows the example of his father.

Brianna shares her experiences with Maggie Greene. She says people will get more and more angry and something bad will happen. Maggie replies that Rick will come up with a plan and inform everyone, after which the Hilltop residents will return home.

Rick talks to Negan. He worries that people might turn against him. Negan says that Rick can deceive his people into thinking they are safe.

Eugene Porter turns on the radio and tries to find any signs of radio signals. Rick comes to him and tells him that he has a plan for revenge. A regular army will be created and trained.

Josh's parents Vincent and Julia discuss a plan to avenge their son's death. Morton Rose and his son appear on the threshold.

At the end of the episode, Dwight takes Negan's weapon, Lucille's bat, out of the closet.

Dwight abandons his group, the Saviors. Laura volunteers to go with him.

In Alexandria, Rick and Eugene talk about creating an army. Eugene likes this idea. Rick leaves Eugene's house and is soon attacked by Morton Rose and Vincent. They wanted to remain unrecognized under the cover of darkness, but it didn’t work out. Morton decides to kill Rick, Vincent dissuades him. The attackers begin to fight each other. As Morton leans over Rick to pick up his beating stick, Rick bites him on the neck, severing his enemy's artery. Morton dies, Vincent escapes. Rick is found unconscious by Maggie. He is taken to the hospital. Rick decides to hold a community meeting immediately.

At Hilltop, Andrea walks into Carl's room and sees him making love to Lydia. Andrea leaves without drawing attention to herself.

Michonne chases after Vincent and brings him back to the community. At the meeting, Vincent begs not to kill him. Rick spares him. He announces to those present that an armed detachment will be created that will be able to destroy the Slivers. Dwight and Laura make it to Alexandria and attend Rick's meeting near the end of his speech. The Alexandrians greet the news of the creation of the army with joyful cries. They chant Rick's name.

Call To Arms / Call to Arms (151-156)

A small group of people from Alexandria and Hilltop are at the shooting range. Something goes wrong, and walkers surround people, but they shoot back. Dwight says he can't handle being a leader.

Eugene tries to fix the radio. He tries to get in touch with someone, but to no avail.

Maggie is about to leave Alexandria. Rick says goodbye to her and says that Carl can go home with Lydia. Jesus remains in Alexandria.

Vincent asks Rick for forgiveness. He says everything is fine.

Rick goes into the basement with Negan, and after standing for a while, he leaves.

Gabriel tells Rick that he thanks him and wants to learn how to defend himself, so he will come to the shooting range.

Rick returns home. There he sees Michonne. He tells her that the Kingdom now needs a new leader. Michonne agrees. Then it comes to the chapter of the Saviors. Dwight turned down the position, and Rick doesn't know who could replace him. Michonne says she'll tell him when she comes up with it and asks how old Carl is.

Eugene tries to radio again and someone answers.

Eugene talks on the radio to a stranger. A stranger cannot tell about his community. They agree that they will contact each other at the same time every day, and their leaders will not know about it.

Dwight and Laura train Gabriel. He's making progress. Dwight worries about what will happen when it comes to killing a person. After training, Gabriel prays for forgiveness for the murder.

Rick meets Brandon. He asks for forgiveness for what he did to his father. He attacks Rick and hits him. When he gets tired, Rick hits him with a cane and reminds him that his parents wanted to kill Maggie, his father tried to kill him, and he hit Carl with a brick. Rick threatens Brandon, but Michonne runs up and calms him down. Rick plans to keep Brandon in Alexandria under his supervision.

While everyone is busy leaving, Brandon steals the keys to the cage. He sneaks into the basement and suggests that Negan escape and tell the Whisperers about the preparations for war. Negan says he'll think about it.

Rick and Michonne talk about people's moods. A woman runs up to them. She says the keys to the cage were stolen. Michonne and Rick run to the basement. They go down and find that Negan has escaped.

The Hilltop group returns home. While Maggie isn't looking, Brandon goes into the woods. There he gives Negan his jacket. The two of them head towards the Whisperers.

In Alexandria, Rick sends Aaron and Michonne to find Negan.

Eugene talks to the stranger on the radio. Suddenly a shot is heard. On the street, Paul (one of the residents of Alexandria) shoots Marco because he thinks he is the Whisperer. Marco is taken to the infirmary, Paul is taken for questioning.

A cleanup team, including Magna's group, under the leadership of Dwight, shoots walkers in the forest.

Dwight uses Lucille as a weapon. Laura asks him why. Dwight says that Lucille is a symbol of authority, a "leader's staff", and that he must fix that.

Kelly and Connie are outraged that they have to kill walkers for the Alexandrians. Magna objects and says that they should be glad that they were accepted, even after talking to Negan.

Michonne and Aaron find traces of Negan and Brandon. They determine that the fugitives are heading towards the Whisperers' camp and follow them.

Brandon and Negan approach the border. Brandon sees poles, on one of which his mother's head hung. Negan says that many mothers are dead now. Brandon starts crying. Negan apologizes and hugs him. The boy says that he wants the Alexandrians and the Whisperers to kill each other. Negan says this good plan, or rather was plan, and stabs Brandon in the stomach.

Andrea talks to Maggie who returned from Alexandria with her team. Carl tells Maggie that he wants to stay at Hilltop with Lydia instead of returning to Alexandria. Negan finds the Whisperers and speaks with Beta, presumably one of Alpha's lieutenants. Andrea arrives back in Alexandria and is shocked to see Rick's wounded face. Michonne and Aaron find Brandon's corpse and talk about possibly starting a relationship with Paul. However, they are ambushed by the Travelers and the Whisperers, and while they are fighting back, Beta arrives, stabbing Aaron in the intestines. Negan reveals his name and that he is in love before Alpha.

Beta and his men try to capture Michonne, who defends both herself and the wounded Aaron. Dwight and his men arrive in time to the scene of the fight and save them, and Beta has to flee. Michonne takes Aaron to Hilltop, instructing Dwight to detain Beta, he promises to fulfill, but when Michonne leaves, he orders his people to retreat beyond the border of the whisperers, since instead of luring them into their territory, they carried out a massacre on their field. Meanwhile, in Alexandria, Andrea reproaches Rick for the consequences that his tactics led to and declares that he is doing business like Negan, Rick immediately remembers that he did not tell Andrea about Negan's escape.

Meanwhile, Negan himself is pushing wedges against Alpha, though to no avail. And soon Beta, who appeared, rushes at Negan and accuses him of leading the chase. Alpha demands an explanation from Negan.

Michonne brings Aaron, barely alive, to Hilopp and hands him over to Dr. Carson.

The saviors, meanwhile, are returning to the outskirts, having simultaneously killed Brandon, who has become a walker, and are now awaiting the consequences of their actions, since, according to Dwight, they committed an act of aggression against the whisperers...

Beta tells Alpha that he does not like Negan's presence in the Whisperer group. Alpha asks if Beta really wants to question her authority. Beta denies this and bows to Alpha. Alpha tells Negan that he can stay with the group and gives him a knife. According to her, the “leather outfit” still has to be earned. Negan helps the group hunt and chop wood. The attack of zombies, who do not touch the Whisperers, becomes a test for Negan, who easily deals with the walkers.

One night, Negan sees two men trying to rape a woman. Negan intervenes and beats up one of the rapists. Negan gets hit by Beta. Alpha explains that the Whisperers' strategy is not to interfere, that they need to protect themselves on their own. Negan calls bullshit on this. According to Negan, he did terrible things, but there was a reason for everything. Alpha replies that the Whisperers obey only animal instincts. Alpha says he misses his daughter. Alpha cries and says she is not strong enough. Negan reveals that he, too, lost a loved one.

Negan slits Alpha's throat, he cuts off her head and remarks, "We'll see what happens when Rick sees you."

The Whisperer War / War with the Whisperers (157-162)

Fleeing from the whisperers, Negan comes across a patrol of saviors led by Dwight, who sends him to Rick. At the sight of Alpha's severed head, Rick is both happy and alarmed at the same time. Negan tells him what Brandon wanted by freeing him, as well as everything he learned while among the whisperers. They have already found Alpha's body and now Beta is ready to lead them. Realizing that the whisperers' response will not be long in coming, Rick announces mobilization. Negan is paroled from further imprisonment and placed under Dwight's supervision. Meanwhile, in the Kingdom, Ezekiel's successors debate whether they should participate in the upcoming war and help Riku with resources.

Gabriel finally climbs the water tower and immediately sees a crowd of walkers heading towards him. He begins to climb down the stairs and call for help, but due to carelessness he falls and breaks his leg. Beta arrives and stabs him in the stomach.

Kingdom. Vincent arrived in the Kingdom and is confused by the fact that Tara and the others do not want to give him help. After which he leaves, but John stops him and demands that he leave the horse with them. After which Vincent is forced to get to Alexandria on foot.

Alexandria. The meeting where Rick instilled hope in the people of Alexandria ended. Eugene approaches him. They talk a little. Rick notices that he is being secretive about something, but Eugene is hesitant to reveal the truth.

Kingdom. William, as the boss, finds out how their situation is. Zachary resents the fact that Rick has their best people on his defense. William tells him that they have already discussed this and sends Zachary away. He follows him and says that he will regret it, but William doesn’t think so and grins. He was clearly up to something evil.

While Negan and Dwight are in ambush, Negan asks him for a weapon, but he does not give it to him because... doesn't trust. Negan thinks it's all because of Sherry. Laura comes running and reports that a crowd of walkers is approaching them. Dwight is hesitant because Gabriel would have warned them already. Dwyatt orders everyone to disperse. A shootout begins.

The Whisperers lurk in the crowd of walkers. They attack Dwight's group. They kill one of the women, so Negan gets a rifle. Magna's group arrives to help, then a group from Korolevtsva.

Alexandria. Eugene comes to the workshop and decides to expand production.

Kingdom. While Tara and the others play cards, Sherry listens to their conversation about the fact that Rick's enemies can deal with him, and then they will come for their souls. Sherry starts to worry.

Michonne and Jesus come to Dwight's aid.

Unnoticed from the crowd of walkers, Dwight's people are attacked by Beta, and then he himself. Negan helps Dwight by hitting Beta in the head with a rifle.

Negan begins to fight Beta. At that time, Dwyatt is attacked by walkers. He throws his bat to Lucille to help Negan. He is glad to have her back. A couple of minutes later, help arrives in the form of Michonne, Jesus, Laura Magna. Negan gets the better of Beta and beats him with his bat. Yes, it hits so hard that it... breaks! Negan is shocked! He is very disappointed and starts screaming. Blames Beta for everything. Afterwards, a crowd of walkers attacks Negan, and help comes to Beta. Negan can't calm down. He demands to leave Beta, because... not finished with him.

Soon, Dwight and the others defeat the crowd of walkers. Everyone sees the Whisperers running away in a hurry into the forest. But the walkers do not allow the heroes to catch their breath, and a new wave attacks them.

At the same time, the Whisperers are dragging the beaten Beta. The question arises between them: “Has anyone seen Beta’s face?” It turns out not. Still, one decides to take off his mask, but the other stabs him right in the head with a knife for this. Apparently no one needs to know what Beta looks like.

Dwyatt's got it brewing new plan against the walkers - to divide them: he gives the order to Jesus to go to the east, Michonne - to the west, Magne - to the north, and he himself will go to the place of retreat.

Hilltop. Karl and Lydia argue about future fate. She says that the Whisperers should be feared because... they do not consider themselves human, they have no purpose in life, they will easily kill and die for her mother Alpha. They have nothing to lose. But Karl responds to this that there is no need to scare people, their group is larger, they are more collected and stronger. Lydia says that they all have a weakness too - they are caring. Lydia feels sorry for Karl and tells him that she does not love him.

Alexandria. Vincent returns to Alexandria on foot, exhausted.

Eugene teaches people how to make bullets in the workshop.

Aaron's wound has almost healed. He's on the mend. He tells Maggie that if something goes wrong, he wants to be ready.

Rick looks at the cards to find any advantage over the Whisperers.

Kingdom. Sherry ordered Tara to go after Vincent, because... doesn't want to turn Rick against them.

While Zachary is eating, William quietly sneaks into his house and puts a knife to his throat. He tells him that he sent his the best people not at all to protect Rick, but so that they would help him. William is extremely reluctant to let his enemies attack them too. He threatens to kill Zachary if he says anything else undesirable to him.

The Whisperers wander through the crowd of walkers. They understand that they have been separated. One of them decides to go to the edge and reconnoiter the situation, but... an arrow from Dwight flies into his head. Dwight and his men drag the dead Whisperer into the forest. He orders his clothes to be taken off, after which he puts on a mask made from the skin of walkers.

Vincent returns on foot to Alexandria. On the way to him, Heath rushes on a horse. He picks him up and they leave for Alexandria together.

Several Whisperers walk among the crowd of walkers and talk to each other. They suspect something is wrong. They were supposed to catch up with their own, but they were separated. Dwight and Michonne disguised themselves among them. Then, when one of the Whisperers hears that Michonne was called by name (even though, as we know, Whisperers do not call each other by names), Michonne attacks them.

The other Whisperers drag the wounded Beta behind them. Finally he woke up. First of all, he asks them if they have seen his face? To which everyone answers that no. They tell him what happened after he lost consciousness. He further reports that since everything is going according to plan, the others should soon reach Hilltop and return Alpha’s daughter back to their community.

William walks around the Kingdom and tells Taylor that everyone needs to be on duty.

Dante comes to Maggie and tells her that he needs to talk to her.

Dwyatt tells Laura that they won't use walker skin masks all the time. It's disrespectful to those people. They are then going to set up camp at a retreat location.

Dante admits to Maggie that he really likes her and that he wants to be with her. But Maggie turns him down, saying that she has always loved Glenn and will never love anyone else.

In the middle of the night, Carl goes out into the Hilltop courtyard and sees fire arrows falling from the sky. It was the Whisperers who came for Lydia. Karl begins to scream in order to notify everyone that they are under attack.

Tara, following the horse's hoofprints, catches up with Heath and Vincent. Vincent tells Heath that she can't be trusted. Tara reports that she did not come to quarrel, but to return the horse to Vincent. Next, Heath asks if she would provide help to fight the Whisperers, but Tara refuses. Everyone is leaving.

At Hilltop, the main gate collapses. The Whisperers continue to attack. Maggie rushes to save her son and Sophia, who are in the house. Karl helps her. Next, one of the Whisperers grabs Lydia and tells her that he will save her, that she must come with them because her mother wanted it that way. Lydia learns from him that her mother has died. She points a gun at the Whisperer, saying that her home is now in the Hilltop, and that they should not have come here. He threatens to announce that the end has come for the Whisperers, and then kills the Whisperer in the head.

Hilltop

Lydia and all the residents of Hilltop continue to fight the Whisperers who attacked their colony.

Maggie and Carl rescue her son Hershel Jr. and Sofia from a burning house. Carl says he's staying behind to find the rest of the survivors. Of course Maggie is against this. She says they need to save themselves. But Karl remains at all costs. He saves several residents and directs them to the exit of the building. Then he discovers Brianna lying unconscious on the floor in one of the rooms and her son Johnny next to her. Carl and Johnny take Brianna by the arms and carry her out of the house. The house begins to gradually collapse, and burning boards fall on top of Karl. Karl is passed out. Johnny can't help him. He picks up his mother and they both sneak out of the house.

A moment later, Aaron comes to Carl's aid. He saves him. Harlan Carson is giving him CPR. Karl comes to his senses.

Little by little, the Whisperers retreat. It seems that everything is over.

Alexandria

Finally, Heath and Vincent returned to Alexandria. They come to Rick and tell him everything that happened. Heath thinks Tara is worried about trouble brewing between the camps.

Kingdom

Taylor comes running to William and reports that Martin has returned from a patrol, and he saw a herd of walkers, among which there could be Whisperers. He then followed them to Hilltop and saw that the colony was under attack. William orders everyone to be gathered.

Foray led by Dwight

It turns out that Connie was bitten on the hand by a walker. No one from her group dares to amputate it for her. Magna says she will do it herself. She picks up an ax and chops off her hand, thereby saving Connie's life from turning into a walker.

Dwight berates Negan for crying over a broken bat while a woman's arm was cut off. Negan tells him that he will never understand why Lucille meant so much to him.

After all, Dwyatt says that at sunrise it is time for them to return home.

As the Whisperers and Beta watch the Hilltop burn, they do not think that the Hilltop residents have defeated them. Beta says they should go back to their camp and end this.

War factory

At night, Eugene loaded up a cart with ammunition to take it to Alexandria and distribute ammunition to everyone. The Alexandria man says he should wait until morning and not risk himself for a bunch of ammo. Eugene, in response to this, tells him that cartridges are everything to them, that he lives to make them for people, and will die for this. After all, other people keep them safe.

Alexandria

Rick tells Andrea to keep an eye on Tara, Sherry, John, Hal, Mark and the other Saviors when he's at the bell tower because... suggests that they are planning something evil. He says things can get bad and they should be prepared for anything.

Sanctuary

Tara returns to the Kingdom. John meets her at the gate. She asks him where she can find Sherry. Then she comes to her and reports that the horse could not be returned, because... they didn’t take him. She also says that she is worried about Rick's people because... there's a lot at stake. To everything Tara said, Sherry replies that she believes in Rick Grimes. Rick will win at all costs, even though many will have to die in the war. And when it's all over, when the Whisperers are gone, when Rick's people are tired and weak, then they will take over what's left.

Negan holds a farewell funeral for Lucille. He puts her in the ground and regrets that he did not bury his wife (as it turns out later). After all, it was in her honor that he named his baseball bat. He says he will miss her.

Meanwhile, a group from the Kingdom, led by William, races to help the people of Hilltop. They see from afar that Hilltop has fallen, it is destroyed and all on fire. Next they meet with the surviving residents. William regrets to Maggie that they didn't come to help sooner. To which Maggie replies that they are not to blame for anything. William offers his help. Maggie explains to him that they have several horses missing and asks him to give them one to find them. And after the fire is over, they are going to check the surviving supplies and go to Alexandria. Maggie says that soon they will rebuild the Hilltop, just like they did with Alexandria, and that they will make it better.

Karl calms Lydia down. He tells her that they will survive everything. Lydia admits that this is not the first time the Whisperers have fought with other people. She had never been on the other side or seen what happened after them. She wounded many and killed many. To which Karl replies that he also had a hard time, that he can say the same about himself. He explains to her that all the terrible things they did were in order to be in their current place, so as not to do such things again and live happily.

The Whisperers drag Beta to their camp. They see that Beta is very tired and offer him a rest, but he is determined to continue going faster to finish off all the survivors.

Alexandria

Rick and Andrea come to the conclusion that if she fires 2 shots from the bell tower, it will mean that the Whisperers are approaching, and if she fires 3, then the Saviors. After all, Rick suspects that some of the Saviors are behaving very strangely towards his group. Rick admits to Andrea that he cares about people and that he has gone soft behind the walls of Alexandria, but Andrea assures him that this is not the case.

And at this time Eugene returns on a cart with horses, which contains the ammunition that he made. After he greeted everyone, he faints, managing to explain this by saying that he had not slept. After all, he wanted to make sure that the ammunition would be in the community by morning. Rick advises him to rest.

Afterwards, Rick and Eugene talk at the table. Eugene says that helping them is very important to him.

Then they hear a shot from Andrea, which meant that Dwight's group had returned. Rick realizes that Dwight has succeeded with the Whisperers. They won. Dwight says that they still lost several, incl. and Father Gabriel, because he didn't return. Rick promises that as soon as everything calms down, they will go and check if this is true. Dwight tells how things went with the Whisperers while he was on the outing, and that they dealt with everyone. After each of Dwight’s answers, Rick asks him if he’s sure it’s all over? But Dwight is confident. He tells him that they had to deal with hundreds of dead people, and it wasn't easy. After this, Rick comes into a daze, because... what he saw before cannot be called hundreds of dead people. According to him, there are many more of them. Rick hurries Dwight to go back. Dwight is shocked.

A huge herd of the dead is approaching Alexandria. The Whisperers say that nothing will stop the herd, and Beta, in turn, adds that they have done their job, and that what they started will be completed by the dead.

Certain Doom / Certain Death (163-168)

Rick and Dwight watch as an ocean of dead people approaches Alexandria. Andrea joins them and says that she will harness the horses. Dwight says he will help Eugene and the others turn the herd around. After some time, part of the Alexandria settlement is sent on this mission.

Eugene tells everyone that the best solution is to take the herd into the ocean. They won’t be able to take everyone away, so you need to try to distract as many dead people as possible.

At the same time, Rick tells the Alexandrians that if the rest of the crowd goes towards the community, they will shoot them. Negan comes to the noise around him. He doesn't understand what's happening. Rick tells him he won't get the gun.

Andrea suggests breaking up into pairs to lead the herd in small groups. Michonne teams up with Jesus, Andrea teams up with Dwight. Michonne decides to make things easier. She gets off her horse and asks Jesus to cover her while she cuts up the walkers. After this, she tells Jesus that it is his turn to cut them up.

The people remaining in Alexandria armed themselves with knives to silently eliminate the walkers standing at the main gate. Negan has no intention of sitting still, so he enters the fight first. A couple of minutes later, a crowd of walkers breaks down the gate and enters the streets of Alexandria. Rick orders everyone to move back as quickly as possible. Annie suggests setting the walkers on fire so they can each set each other on fire and that way they will get rid of them. Rick refuses this and says that if they do this, the whole city will burn down. Rick sees Paula being attacked by the dead and rushes to her to pull her away from them, but it is too late. She manages to tell Rick to find her son Mikey and save him, and then she is eaten alive. Rick accidentally falls to the ground. He is surrounded by the dead. Suddenly, Negan helps him out. He asks him if he justified himself to him?

At the same time, in the Sanctuary, Tara stands next to John, who watches through binoculars as a crowd of the dead surround Alexandria. John admires the whole picture with a grin.

After the Hilltop fire ended, its residents traveled to Alexandria. As they approached it, they were shocked by how the herd of walkers had overrun the community. Carl is worried about what happened to his father, but Maggie and Lydia convince him that he is alive. Michonne and Jesus join them. The latter will be assured that their people probably managed to hide in the houses and offers to continue taking the walkers apart piece by piece. Maggie wants to help them. She leaves Karl in charge of the camp.

While in Alexandria, Negan and Rick are trying to escape a herd of walkers. Negan runs into the house and grabs Rick with him, then closes the door. Now they are forced to sit in shelter. He still reminds Rick that he saved him, unlike the Alexandrians, who were scared and didn't even think of giving him a helping hand. He also says that they are similar to each other in that they feel calmer in such a situation than other people.

Negan asks Rick to name the worst thing he has ever done in his life. Rick rudely refuses him this. Negan notices that Rick has been swearing more often since he came into his life, and yet he insists that Rick tell him the worst thing he has ever done. Rick collects his thoughts and tells him that he is ashamed that he is alive while his friends died. Negan admits that he is familiar with this, that he was surrounded by wimps who were torn to pieces by walkers every now and then, and over time he became disillusioned with people and lost respect for them. He understands that he has done a lot of nasty things, for which he is destined for a cauldron in hell, and admits that it was Rick who helped him realize all this, he changed his thinking. Then he talks about his worst thing- about leaving his wife to die, that he couldn’t kill her himself and asked another guy to do it, and also that he couldn’t bury her.

Eugene and Heath completed their task - they led the herd of walkers into the ocean, but Heath suggests continuing to pull them away from the community and, at the end, checking that they are following the given course.

Dwight and Laura are not sitting still either. They also take away walkers. Afterwards they meet Andrea, Magna and Yumiko and invite them to continue this matter, but instead they will try to get behind the wall. Then they meet Eugene and Heath on their way. Dwight takes Heath to his team, and Eugene joins Andrea and the others.

Negan notices that the herd is beginning to thin out. Rick understands that he cannot sit idly by, and therefore he needs to go get weapons to help Dwight and the others. Negan stops Rick and says that he will go on this mission himself. He walks out the door and tells Rick to cover for him.

While at the camp, Carl realizes that they have been standing on the sidelines for too long and commands the Hilltop residents to get their weapons to help the rest of the people who are fighting for them.

While madness is happening in Alexandria, the Saviors gather together in their Sanctuary to observe what is happening there. John looks down on him through binoculars and orders everyone to start packing up because... he sees that the situation there is more or less calming down. In a few hours they should move out and clean up what's left there. This is a hint that they are going to war against Alexandria.

After Negan came out of hiding, and Rick remained to cover him, he entered into battle with the dead, and he was amused by it. Suddenly a dead man comes at him from behind, and Rick saves his life by firing a pistol at the dead man. Rick then suggests opening other doors to get out.

Siddiq checks the radio at Eugene's house and it turns out to be working because... Stephanie answers the call. Siddiq also answers her, but Annie calls him to return to fight the dead. The connection is interrupted.

A herd of dead people moves towards the ocean, and then many of them fall into it from a cliff. Everything is going as Eugene planned. But not all dead people go to the ocean. Some headed in the other direction. Eugene, Andrea, Magna and Yumiko decide to lead the stragglers back to the herd, since they can lead those remaining on the cliff. They can do it. And then Eugene feels tired.

Maggie and Dante separated from Michonne with Jesus.

The dead continue to break through the gates of Alexandria.

Out of nowhere, Laura, Dwight and Heath are attacked by the Saviors, led by Sherry. She says Dwight chose his side. A fight breaks out between Dwight and John.

Maggie and Dante reunite with Michonne and Jesus. They decide to stay and make sure that the dead are heading towards the ocean. Jesus notices horses in the distance.

Eugene, Andrea, Magna and Yumiko are surrounded by the dead. Eugene asks Andrea to give him the forge in order to distract them, and thus she will not have to break through the herd. He assures her that he will find a way, that he can slip through the gap and will not be delayed. He takes the forge from her and leaves on horseback. He then blows a horn and slides off his horse. The dead surround him. Andrea helps him by shooting at them and tells him to run. Magna and Yumiko help her in the shootout while she rides to Eugene's aid. She catches up with him, but he asks her to leave him. Andrea refuses. There are too many dead people, so they need to fight to get to the edge. Then Eugene and Andrea manage to climb onto a horse and ride away from the dead. Magna meets them. She notices that Andrea was bitten on the neck.

Andrea, despite the bite on her neck, resolutely continues her work - she needs to take the walkers to the coast.

Meanwhile, in Alexandria, Rick and Negan continue to fight off walkers and are called out by Siddiq, Vincent and other members of the group. Negan reproaches them for hiding, but Rick only gives the command to clear out the rest of the walkers to clear the way to the gate. Karl and Lydia appear, followed by another group of dead people. But the Alexandrians don’t have to get their hands dirty - the situation is saved by the arriving Saviors, and with them Heath, Laura and Dwight hostage.

Sherry tells Rick that from now on they are not part of their alliance, and, noticing Negan, asks in a rather rude manner why he is free. The conversation is interrupted by Dwight, who, seizing the moment, disarms Mark. Laura does the same. Rick demands that everyone lay down their weapons, but Dwight does not obey immediately.

Rick and Sherry go to the house for negotiations, in which the newly minted leader of the Saviors makes it clear that if they are not left alone, they will "gladly begin to understand how nice it is to live in this nice place instead of the old dirty factory." Since it is impossible to reach an agreement peacefully, Sherry begins to threaten Rick, saying that he should be afraid of her. A fight breaks out between them, as a result of which Sherry almost strangles her opponent, but by luck, Rick manages to break free, breaking Sherry's neck by hitting her on the table.

At this time, Andrea, who can barely stand on her feet, enters the room and sees Sherr lying dead on the floor. Rick tells her it was an accident. She then shows him the bite on his neck.

Andrea passes out in Rick's arms. Michonne and Dwight arrive at the house. The latter, seeing the murdered woman, Sherry demands an explanation. Rick says Sherry tried to kill him and she had an accident that resulted in her death. This explanation does not suit Dwight, but he decides to leave the showdown for later. Rick and Michonne carry Andrea into the bedroom.

Eugene arrives and confesses to Rick that what happened is the result of his mistake. But Rick believes that no one is to blame for what happened.

The dying Andrea is visited by everyone who knew her. Even Negan came and said goodbye to her in his own way. Finally, Rick is alone with her. Before his death, Andrea asks him not to stop and to lead people further. Soon she dies and then comes back to life. Rick does not immediately find the strength to kill her completely, struggling with her corpse for quite a long time until he finally pierces her temple with a knife.

Then he leaves the house and sees everyone he knew lined up in front of him. There are tears in everyone's eyes. Rick remembers the words Andrea told him. Then he kneels down and everyone bows their heads before him. Then he gets up and tells everyone to follow him, because... they have a lot to do.

Rick and his people go to the gates of Alexandria, where the residents, together with some Saviors, have already begun to restore order: burning the dead and rebuilding the walls. John asks Rick where their leader Sherry is. Having learned that she is dead, John and the other Saviors, without waiting for an explanation, are immediately going to start another bloodshed. Negan intervenes, using his charisma to cool down the hotheads. He announces that there will be no return to the past, beats Mark for being a toady, and finds the right words for John. After this, the Saviors go back, and Rick and the others go to bury the dead.

Years These are classic “slow zombies” who died and rose again. These zombies are quite tenacious, able to withstand severe cold in winter, while freezing, they reduce their activity, but are able to restore it with the onset of the warm season. Zombies do not distinguish human speech, reacting only to loud sounds. The main way to identify zombies among themselves is a specific smell; transferring this smell to his clothes, a person becomes invisible to them. This feature helped Glenn and Rick get into the depths of Atlanta in search of weapons, and also Michonne spend several months surrounded by zombies, with virtually no shelter.

Zombies are shown in varying degrees of decomposition, up to complete skeletonization of the body, but even then they retain some motor ability. The greatest speed of movement and reaction is shown immediately after conversion, in the first months of existence, due to the best preservation of the body. The only way to permanently kill a zombie is to severely damage the central nervous system by breaking the head with a heavy object such as a shovel or hammer (Tyrese's favorite weapon). Cutting off a zombie's head is not enough to kill it completely, as the head still shows some signs of activity afterwards.

Another important feature is the route of infection, one of which is believed by most to be the bite (although in fact the bite only kills!). It is known that the reason for everything was military developments in the field of biological weapons (though according to Eugene, which cannot be considered true). In general, it is not known exactly how infection occurs; most likely - by airborne droplets (through the air), since all the heroes of the series were infected, even those who avoided direct contact with zombies. The only way to avoid death after a bite/scratch is surgical amputation of the damaged part of the body, if possible, in the first hours after the injury. Under proper operating conditions, a person survives, as was proven in the example of the amputation of Allen's right leg. But regardless of the cause of death, all people will be resurrected as zombies, which echoes the concept of zombies in the work of George Romero, where the same principles apply.

Zombies are attracted not only to people, but also to animals as food, although it is not shown that any of them turn into “undead” (later, in one of the issues of The Talking Dead, Robert Kirkman, answering a question from a viewer, reports that animals cannot turn into zombies). Zombies can be divided into two main categories: “wandering” and “guarding”. The first ones are in constant movement, the main stimulating factor of which is loud sounds and the direction of movement of their kind, as the plot develops, “herds” are mentioned - huge groups of zombies, reaching several thousand. “Guarding” zombies are motionless and become active upon direct contact with a person or animal.

The Walking Dead(The Walking Dead) is a long-running comic book series created by Robert Kirkman and illustrated by Tony Moore. It tells the story of police officer Rick Grimes, who awakens from a coma during the zombie apocalypse. He finds his wife and son, and meets other survivors, gradually taking on the role of leader of the group, and later of the entire community.

The Walking Dead first released in 2003 with Volume 1: Days Gone (#1 - 6) and Volume 2: Miles Behind (#7 onwards). Moore continued to provide covers for all 24 issues.
In 2007 and 2010, he received the long-awaited and well-deserved Eisner Award for the best long-running series. The award was presented at Comic-Con International in San Diego.
The comic continues its release until December 2015. There were 149 issues in total.

The main idea of the comic

The Walking Dead comic book tells about a world that is formed in the wake of a zombie apocalypse. The exact reason why people turned into zombies was never established. The source of the epidemic itself has also not been discovered.

The basis of the plot is that people who are not subject to the zombie apocalypse are in a constant struggle for survival.

The main idea of the comic is to show the full human essence and the evil that is inherent in many from the very beginning. The survival of the characters is shown in conditions with limited supplies of resources, minimal social connections and conditions of habitual life, while people forget about moral standards, and the other side of people, real human evil, is revealed. Not everyone is able to endure such changes, as a result of which they go crazy, change in character, psyche, or go to extreme measures - suicide.

The plot of the comic book The Walking Dead

Rick Grimes is the main character of the comic, who later becomes the leader of the survivors of the zombie invasion. Rick was in a coma when the zombie apocalypse begins. After emerging from his coma, Rick, his wife Lori, and their son Carl join a group of other survivors. This group included former best friend Shane, who secretly dated Laurie when Rick was in a coma, young courier Glenn, college graduate Andrea and her sister Amy, mechanic Jim, car salesman Dale, shoe salesman Allen and his wife Donna, and also their children - Ben and Billy and others.

Zombies are described in the comic as very "slow zombies" who are resurrected after they die. Zombies cannot understand human language and only respond to sound. The main way to recognize zombies and their own kind among themselves is a specific terrible smell. However, if you transfer the smell to human clothing, it immediately becomes invisible to them. You can kill a zombie only by hitting the head with a heavy object so that it breaks. A person can become infected by a zombie through a bite, after which after some time he turns into a zombie.

General information

The Walking Dead comic shows the world after zombie apocalypse, the chain of events that led to the “fall” of the world is not told, but from the memories of survivors it can be indirectly judged that the crisis developed over at least several weeks. The exact reason for people turning into zombies has not been revealed, and the source is also unknown epidemics.

The main storyline of the comic is the struggle for survival of a group of people. The central character of the comic is Rick Grimes, a former police officer turned leader of a group of survivors seeking permanent refuge.

The main idea developed in the comic is “ evil", inherent in all people initially, but for the majority it is restrained by the norms and rules of behavior of peaceful life. It is shown that with the destruction of social connections, with the destruction of the usual way of life, in conditions of limited resources and the struggle for the survival of the norm morality cease to exist, their “ dark side" As a result, other survivors become the main existential threat along with the zombie threat. Not all people are able to endure this, many commit suicide, “taking” the whole family with them, many experience irreversible changes in psyche, changing people so much that they are unable to return to their previous lives.

Chapters

Days Gone Bye / Good days have passed (1-6)

The story begins when, while chasing and apprehending a dangerous criminal, a policeman from a small town in Kentucky- Rick Grimes - gets it hard wound and loses consciousness. After an unknown period of time, he comes to his senses in the ward hospitals. No one responds to his calls for help. Then he himself begins to look for help, but sees that the hospital is abandoned. Opening the locked cafeteria, he sees a group of zombies attacking him. He miraculously escapes death, after which he goes to his home, but sees only desolation. On the threshold of the house, he is hit in the head with a shovel by Dwayne, a boy of about eight, who mistook him for a zombie. Together with his father, Morgan Jones, they use their neighbors' house as shelter. Morgan tells Rick what happened. In accordance with the plan, the surviving people began to be evacuated to major cities to better coordinate their defense; Rick's wife and son are most likely in Atlanta.

Taking a car from the police station and weapon, Rick heads out to find his family. Along the way he ends petrol, and he finds it on a nearby farm horse, which gets to Atlanta. On the outskirts of the city, he sees complete desolation, and upon entering the city, he is attacked by a whole crowd of zombies. He is rescued by Glen, a young guy who takes him to a small camp of survivors on the outskirts of the city. There Rick finds his wife, Laurie, and seven-year-old son, Carl. They evacuated along with Shane, Rick’s partner, but were too late: when they approached Atlanta, the city was already “dead.” They are living in a trailer and tents and are waiting for the army to arrive to evacuate them to a safer place.

Among them, Dale is a man of retirement age, he traveled with his wife around the country in his trailer, his wife died at a campsite near Atlanta. He stays together with two young sisters who help him: Andrea, who worked as a clerk in a law firm, and Amy, a college student. Also living at the camp are Allen and Donna, a couple in their forties, with twins Ben and Billy, about seven; Carol is a middle-aged woman with a daughter, Sophie, about seven years old (her husband committed suicide, unable to bear what was happening). Jim is a middle aged man ( mechanic from Atlanta), he lost all his relatives and miraculously escaped from the infected city. Each of them tells their own story of survival, in which they lose all their loved ones.

At night, when everyone is asleep, Dale stands guard with a rifle on the roof of the trailer. They don't have enough weapons, and Rick and Glen decide to sneak into a gun store in the city. Concluding that zombies identify themselves by smell, they smear the insides of a recently killed zombie on their clothes, and it works: as they make their way closer to the city center, the zombies do not notice them. Having collected carts full of weapons, they move back, but a strong attack begins rain, and their clothes become wet, they narrowly escape from the zombies, losing most of their weapons in the process.

A month after Rick's appearance, a conflict grows between him and Shane over Shane's sympathy for Lori. Rick guesses that there was some kind of relationship between them. One night they are attacked by a whole group of zombies, which has never happened before. Before everyone can react, one of the zombies mortally wounds Amy and bites Jim. The next day, Jim goes further into the forest with a gun in his hand. The contradictions between Shane and Rick, who considers it necessary to take the group away in search of a safer place, reach a climax. Shane points a gun at Rick, wanting to shoot him, when Carl shoots and shoots Shane in the throat, killing him. The group decides to start searching for a safer place.

Miles Behind Us/ Miles Behind (7-12)

Made To Suffer/Born To Suffer (43-48)

The Governor survived being mutilated by Michonie. Having recovered from his wounds, he tells his men a tale about the supposedly evil inhabitants of the prison. Soon, scouts from Woodberry find the location of the prison and the Governor and his army arrive there. The assault begins, which soon fizzles out. People living in prison do not intend to give up and fight off the attack. Having lost a dozen people, the Governor retreats. Rick's team also suffered damage, Excel, Andrea and himself were injured.

Immediately after this, Tyreese and Michonee decide to counterattack and escape from the prison to the Governor's location. Their plan fails. Tyreese is captured and after negotiations with Rick about surrendering the prison fail, the Governor beheads him with the sword of Michoni, who managed to escape.

Meanwhile, Dale, Andrea, Glenn, Maggie and Allen's children and Sophia leave the prison in a trailer, fearing another attack. Soon it happens again and this time it is more violent. Unable to withstand the pressure of the attackers, the defenders of the prison die, even Lori and her newborn daughter. Only Rick and Carl manage to escape. But the Governor's cruelty turns against him. One of his fighters, seeing Lori and Judy killed, realizes that he was following the monster and kills his former leader. After this, the remnants of the Governor's army barricade themselves in the prison building, where they find themselves trapped without food or ammunition.

Here We Remain / Here we are the same (49-54)

During the next game hunt, they find a car in good condition and take it to themselves.

Some time later, Michonni, who escaped from the Governor, comes to their hideout, after which they decide to go in search of people who left the prison after the Governor’s first attack. In the car Rick found, they hit the road and soon find Dale, Andreu, Glenn, Maggie and the children on Hershel's farm.

What We Become / Who we have become (55-60)

Rick, Carl and Michonnie are once again among friends, although the meeting is far from joyful due to the news brought by Rick. For Maggie, what happened turns into a shock when she learns that all members of her family are dead. Dale is also unhappy, he begins to be afraid of Rick and admits this to Andrey.

After several days of travel, the Group arrives at Rick's hometown. He suggests going there to pick up weapons and ammunition from an abandoned police station. Abraham and Karl go with him, and the rest remain waiting for them at the gas station.

While Rick, Carl and Abraham are away, the others are waiting for them at an abandoned farm along the road. Dale again confides in Andrea his concerns about Rick.

Fear The Hunters / Fear the hunters (61-66)

During the next stop, a terrible event occurs - for unknown reasons, little Ben kills his brother Billy. This puts Rick in a difficult position. Ben can harm any member of the group and no one will understand it. Abraham suggests killing the boy, which understandably draws protest from Dale, Andrea and Rick, but some agree with Abraham, but no one can bring themselves to do it. The dispute is unexpectedly resolved by Carl, who kills Ben early in the morning while everyone is sleeping. No one sees this; the boy was able to sneak through Glen, who was on duty, unnoticed.

As it turns out, they were the ones who kidnapped Dale, and what's worse, they are cannibals. They ate Dale's other leg, although they didn't eat any more. As it turned out, Dale deliberately lagged behind the group, as he was bitten during the last attack of the dead. Soon Rick, Abraham and Andrea come out to the cannibals, who brutally deal with them.

Rick gradually begins to fear himself after what he did, Carl confesses to him about killing Ben, and this upsets Rick the most.

The survivors begin to become despondent when a certain Aron comes out to meet them. As it turned out, one of the suburbs of Washington was cleared and surrounded by an impenetrable fence. About fifty people live there under the leadership of former Senator Douglas. From time to time, special groups make forays into Washington for food, medicine, clothing and other items. After Abraham and Rick rescue the ambushed miners, Aron declares trust in Rick and his companions and invites them to join the community.

The town really looks peaceful, just like it did before the zombie outbreak. As it turned out, Aron is a scout who is looking for survivors and if they have positive qualities, he invites them to the community to expand it. There is a place for every new person here. So Rick and Michoni become local guardians of order, Gabriel, respectively, is a priest, Abraham is a builder, Morgan is a cook, etc. The leader of the community, Douglas, makes a good impression.

Rick and his friends' harrowing journey has come to an end, but are they ready to return to peaceful life?

Too Far Gone / We went nowhere further (73-78)

On his first trip, Abraham finds himself in a situation where their company is attacked by walkers.

Douglas's son hit on Andrea. His mother (Regina) notices this and begins to woo him, but her son says that this is just communication. Glenn, under the pretext of replenishing supplies, ends up in the armory when Olivia was issuing weapons. Rick, having acquired a weapon, offers it to Andrea, but she refuses and starts a conversation in which she points out that they are safe here and nothing bad should happen.

After meeting Pete, he learns that he had a quarrel with his wife and therefore spends the night here. Rick later remembers that he noticed a bruise on Ron (Pete's son). After drawing analogies and talking with Pete's wife Jaycee, he comes to Pete and begins a showdown, which results in a fight. (Small aside: after this scene, a joke was added to the comic in the form of a color fragment). Result: Jaycee and his son move away from Pete, Rick already feels like a complete psycho.

But he declares that the leader is now RICK!..

No Way Out (79-84)

Calm is slowly returning to the town of the living. Only Douglas still cannot get over his loss. Aaron warns him that he can no longer go beyond the wall to look for survivors. Meanwhile, Abraham and his men decide to drive away the dead gathered at the gate. As usual, Andrea goes to the bell tower, and everyone else, armed with crowbars, knives and other quiet weapons, goes to battle.

Unexpectedly for everyone, a herd of dead people wanders into the town. Abraham and his comrades barely have time to return before the herd takes the town under a tight siege. Andrea finds herself trapped in the bell tower.

Rick is urgently taking action to ensure people's safety. Additional armed posts are set up, and several families are concentrated in one house. Jaycee and Ron move into Rick and Carl's house.

They kill Tobin and bite Morgan, and Michonni cuts off his bitten hand.

Having captured one of the walkers, he smears himself with the dead man's entrails, as he did before, and goes out to help with Carl, Jesse, Ron and Michonni.

We Find Ourselves / We found ourselves (85-90)

After the battle, Rick, again forced to take on the role of leader, announces that the community will be restored and that no dead will drive them away from here. Abraham, Glenn, Spencer, Aaron and other survivors collect the corpses to burn them.

Rick, sitting in the infirmary, admits to Denise that Ron and Jesse died because of him. Glenn apologizes to Maggie for leaving, and Maggie understands. Later, everyone attends the funeral of Tobin, Morgan, Douglas, Jesse and Ron. Rick says that all his decisions were wrong and suggests that everyone present their own idea for further survival.

Sitting in the infirmary, Rick begins to talk to an unconscious Carl when suddenly Carl starts coughing. Rick tells Denise about this and she, having examined Karl, says that Karl is still in a coma and no changes have occurred. While walking near the graves, Rick notices Michoni near Morgan's grave.

A Larger World (91-96)

The group that went to the city returns with a large supply of provisions, but Rick realizes that soon there will be no food at all and decides to establish agriculture. Andrea finally decides to forget about Dale's death. Carl has nightmares and remembers how he killed Ben.

Abraham and Michonni go to the city to investigate. All this time, a stranger armed with a revolver is watching them. Abraham and Miccioni meet him after a short skirmish with zombies. He turns out to be a rather clever guy, he takes the sword from Michonni and takes Abraham hostage.

Michoni, Abraham and Rick decide to find the communities Paul was talking about under Andrea's cover. Having reached the review site, Rick begins to believe that the stranger was telling the truth, and their whole life could change.

Returning to Alexandria, Rick notices Carl communicating with a tied-up Paul. After a short conversation, Rick agrees to the deal and begins to gather the group for a hike. After going through a rather difficult path, Rick, along with Paul, Michoni, Glenn, Carl and Andrea, reach the wanderer’s community. There they are met by the community leader Gregory, who is very similar to Douglas. But as soon as Rick manages to get to know him, a certain member of the community attacks Gregory and, muttering some nonsense about blackmail, stabs him with a knife. Rick has to kill the attacker, which, as always, almost ruins the good relationship that had just begun. Paul manages to calm his comrades, after which he explains to Rick what could have happened.

It turns out that the community led by Gregory is protected by a gang of a certain Negan, calling themselves the “Saviors”. They clear the area around the community of zombies, demanding in exchange tribute in the form of half of the products produced in the community.

Something To Fear/ Reason for Fear (97-102)

People are worried about the group not returning. Abraham comes to visit Eugene, and he tells how and where you can get things to make cartridges. Rick and the people are attacked by Negan's gang. The group kills all but one so that he can pass on the information that the Hilltop community is now under Rick's protection. The group returns and Maggie reveals that she is pregnant. Abraham and Eugene go into town to get their things. While discussing Eugene and Rosita's relationship, Abraham and Eugene are attacked by unknown "Saviors" who have been secretly following them all the way.

In a minibus, they travel to the streets of Washington, where they are ambushed by the Saviors, led by Negan. Negan decides to kill one of the members of Rick's group, thereby avenging the people he recently lost. He wants to choose a victim using a counting rhyme and his bat, which he named “Lucille.” The countdown ends with Glenn, and Negan beats him to death. In the end, Negan announces that he will return to Alexandria in a week and take half of the property from its residents. Furious, Maggie hits Rick for not being able to do anything about it.

Unexpectedly for everyone, the next day Rick decides to free the marauder, because he is tired of suffering losses among the people dear to him. As the men in whose eyes Rick's status as a leader has visibly eroded (including Carl, Andrea, and Michonne) disperse, Rick tells Jesus to follow Dwight and find out the whereabouts of the Saviors.

(103-108)

While Jesus follows Dwight, Negan's company arrives in Alexandria along with himself. Rick has to open the gate and let them inside. Negan's gang goes into every house and takes whatever they want. Negan personally lets Rick hold his bat, thereby leaving him without a weapon. But realizing that his people could harm the residents of the city, Rick just stands there and does not try to kill Negan. As the gang loads their "loot" into a van, Negan gets into one of them and drives off. At this time, Rick returns home and does not find Carl. Jesus is discovered and Dwight takes him to Negan's base. But Jesus manages to escape unnoticed. As the Saviors unload the van, they notice Carl sneaking into the Saviors' van along with Abraham's machine gun. He kills several "Saviors". But Dwight, who arrived at the unloading site, manages to disarm the guy. Negan shows his possessions to Carl, as well as his "wives". Negan says that if he liked some girl in society, he “takes her as his wife” and then rapes her to his heart’s content. After the tour, Negan brings Carl to his room and begins asking him questions related to the past. He asks Carl to take off the bandage (this is how the disfigured part of Carl's face is shown for the first time), and when Negan is brought a bat, he asks Carl to sing her a song. The conversation is interrupted by a message from one of his subordinates that a certain Mark is ready. Negan reveals that if his new "wife" had a husband or boyfriend, Negan will burn half of his face, showing that the new girl is now completely at Negan's mercy. Negan publicly burns the tied up guy's face and then takes Carl to talk about plans for the future...

Zombie world

The zombie image developed in The Walking Dead is most similar to the zombie image created by George Romero in her first films 1970s years. These are classic "slow zombies" dead and risen again. These zombies are quite tenacious, able to withstand extreme cold in winter, freezing or reducing activity, and restore it with the onset of the warm season. Zombies do not distinguish between humans speech, reacting only to loud sounds. The main way to identify zombies among themselves is a specific smell; transferring this smell to his clothes, a person becomes invisible to them. This feature helped Glen and Rick get into the depths of Atlanta in search of weapons, and also Michonie spend several months surrounded by zombies, with virtually no shelter.

Zombies are shown in varying degrees decomposition, up to full skeletonization body, but even so they retain some motor ability. The greatest speed of movement and reaction is shown immediately after conversion, in the first months of existence, due to the best preservation of the body. The only way to permanently kill a zombie is through heavy damage CNS, as a result of breaking the head with a heavy object, such as shovel or hammer(Tyreese's favorite weapon). Cutting off a zombie's head is not enough to kill it completely, as the head still shows some signs of activity afterwards.

Another important feature is the route of infection, one of which is the bite. A person bitten by a zombie usually turns into one within about a day. The only way to avoid this is prompt amputation damaged part of the body, if possible, in the first hours after injury. Under proper operating conditions, a person survives, as was proven in the example of the amputation of Dale's right leg. But, as it turns out, the bite only significantly speeds up the conversion process; Regardless of the cause of death, all people will be resurrected as zombies, which echoes the concept of zombies in the work of George Romero, where the same principles apply.
