This work of the St. Petersburg poet, historian, translator Evgeniy Lukin is addressed specifically to teenagers and high school students. For many years he collected material for this publication bit by bit. Let's give the floor to the author himself: “When creating each legend, I used many sources and materials. First of all, these are ancient Russian chronicles. They are known to be primary sources for all historians. Secondly, the lives of the saints. They also contain many legends and traditions. It will be absolutely wonderful if this book turns out to be a book for family reading, when both adults and children are nearby and busy with one thing. They read and then discuss what they read. And how many new, unexpected things any reader will discover there - both young and adult. From this book you will learn that it was on the Kulikovo field that the great-power triad “For Faith, Tsar and Fatherland!” was born, which at first was a battle cry... But how many people know where the cruel Mamai, whose name frightened many generations of children in Rus', found his peace? and whose name remains in the proverb “As if Mamai had passed by”?
In every legend there is a feat of a Russian person - military or spiritual. And how has the feat been glorified since the beginning of any civilization? Songs, epics, poems... So the author of this unique work tried to decorate the ending of his story about almost every legend with poems corresponding to it. And here we give a special bow to Evgeniy Lukin. The transition from a prosaic text to a poetic text is always organic. And these two texts are connected not only plot-wise, but also emotionally and spiritually.
It must be said that, compositionally, each chapter-legend is built unusually well. Firstly, the name contains all the names that the city has ever had. As a preface, a short historical background about the city: where, when and by whom it was founded, when and where it was first mentioned, its place and role in the history of Rus'. In the center of this small text is an image of the coat of arms. Next comes the legend itself, artistically processed by the author. But in general, we are faced with the history of Rus' at several stages - formation, gathering of lands, struggle with foreigners, expansion of the Muscovite kingdom.
All this is written in a living, full-blooded modern language, without any stylization, but in such a way that the ancient time continues to live in its own way and remains ours.
And - separately - about the illustrative series. Each page is carefully and lovingly constructed, and city plans, ancient engravings, household and religious objects, sculptural images, monuments, and modern photographs, and an absolutely amazing abundance historical painting. Many readers will be surprised to see paintings by artists familiar from childhood, previously unseen either in museums or in art albums.
The only thing that confuses me is the price of the book. For many lovers of Russian history, it is simply too much to bear. It is clear that the publication is a gift, representative, and, accordingly, published luxuriously. But shouldn't it be republished in a more modest and accessible form for the general reader? So that the book reaches everyone Russian family, has become her own for the young reader since childhood. After all, without knowing your roots, your history, patriotism will remain just one of the tourist terms.
