To date Hip-hop one of the most popular modern dance styles. This style is very interesting and multifaceted. He absorbed the manners and movements of many street styles that appeared earlier: breaking, popping, locking. The enormous popularity of Hip-Hop dancing is directly related to the versatility and diversity of this dance style. You can improvise in it, dance any movements, but in an appropriate manner and to the appropriate music that is inherent in this movement.

Now this style can be seen everywhere: in music videos popular stars, and at advanced events and parties, at presentations, in Hollywood and domestic cinema.

The origins of this movement go back to the gateways of the black ghettos of New York in the 70s of the 20th century. Hip-hop originated among Latinos and African Americans, becoming a kind of alternative to street violence and growing into a whole subculture for young people around the world. Kul Herk is considered one of the founders of hip-hop culture. It was he who coined the term B-Boying. He also became the first m-si, mixed various recordings, read rhythmic texts. This was the birth of rap. The entire culture of the then b-boy generation consisted of forms and styles of self-expression that existed independently from each other: b-boying, popping, electric boogaloo, locking, MCing, up-procking, graffiti and DJing. The famous Africa Baambata became " godfather"Hip-Hop culture, bringing all these concepts together, and christening it with one name "Hip-Hop". Since the unification of all elements into one, a universal spirit of competition has increased in Hip-Hop. They created their own different, unique styles. One of unspoken rules Hip-hop: "peace, love, unity and fun." Hip-hop is characterized by: its own music, its own jargon, its own fashion and its own graphic art. Hip-hop culture quickly became famous and spread throughout the world.

One general culture Hip-hop brings together many genres :

  1. Musical direction - Beatbox, Rap, Funk.
  2. Dance direction - Breakdancing, C-Walk, Crump, waving.
  3. Fine art – Graffiti.

Hip-hop dance has been constantly evolving over the years, incorporating more and more new elements. He creates his own movements and also borrows them from others. dance schools. Despite the ability to improvise and a huge variety of movements, Hip-Hop, like any dance, has its own basic movements that have been formed over the years. The most basic basic movements that are the foundation of Hip-Hop are body swaying (“swing”) and steps (“steps”). That is, this is dynamic and precise work of the body and legs. These movements appeared along with the style, and, despite their simplicity, they look very impressive from the outside. Already knowing how to perform this important set of elements, you can safely perform at an amateur club party.

One of the main dance skills is the ability to hear music. Here they dance not to a melody, not to words, but to a beat that is hidden behind a million different sounds. This is the bass of the music and its rhythmic basis. It is from this basis that the rhythmic movements of the dance itself will come.

Since Hip-Hop culture is still at the stage of its formation, there are no strict canons in it yet. Today here you can find many movements from completely different, and not only street, styles, but also from classical ballet And sports ballroom dancing. The number of substyles in Hip-Hop is growing every day, and each dancer brings something new and unusual to it.

Basic styles used in Hip-Hop dance :

  • Breakdancing - This form of Hip-Hop dance includes movement groups such as freezes, toprock, power moves, and Brooklyn uprock.
    • - toprock – movement of the dancer on his feet, friezes are performed with the help of arms and legs;
    • - power moves – these are flare, swipe, windmill;
    • - Brooklyn uprock is the same toprock, only it involves a battle of dancers - a battle.
  • Locking - this form of dance is characterized by a freezing movement - a “lock”. The dancer makes a sudden pause, just like in the frieze - freezing. The lock is the main movement in this form.
  • Popping: the basis of the technique is sharp tension and relaxation of muscles - “contractions” to the beat of the music. Many subtypes of popping are also used, for example, liquid, animation.
  • Krump is the freest form of dance. This is an emotional mood, constant movements of the chest, vibrations of the arms, movements of the legs.

In Hip-Hop, as in any show, clothing is very important. Baggy pants, sweatshirts, baseball caps with straight peaks, usually from well-known sports companies (Reebok, Nike, Adidas, etc.), sneakers, ski caps, and wide T-shirts are traditional here. Short hairstyles or short African braids are popular.

The most valuable quality is that during dance, with the help of it, absolutely any person will be able to open up, look at himself in a new way, understand himself and his inner essence, feel free and significant.

Hip-hop is a social dance. What is social dance? First of all, this is a dance that is practiced not for competition, but for leisure, for communication and the exchange of positive emotions. A dance that is accessible to everyone, regardless of age, physical qualities, or social status.
The history of hip-hop dance goes back almost three decades.

Founders of hip-hop style

Buddha Stretch, who is one of the founders this direction, says that hip-hop dance emerged towards the end of 1984.

By this time, the era of breakdancing and funk styles (bboying, funkstyles) had come to an end; the musical styles of funk and disco were no longer so popular, they were replaced by hip-hop music. The music has changed - the dance has changed. The birthplace of hip-hop dance was New York, there in various clubs in Harlem Various danced social dancing, such as The Prep, Rambo (The Fila) and many others. A significant number of them were invented back in the 70s, when the funk era was in its heyday; over time they changed, acquired new details, and were performed a little differently.

In clubs such as "Roxy", "Inferno", "Union Square" started playing hip hop music, and a new generation of dancers improvised, mixing old dances, inventing new ones. Gradually, by 1986, a group was formed at the Union Square club that danced in a new style. By 1987, many hip-hop dancers began working with various hip-hop artists (Whodini, Scoob & Scrap, Big Daddy Kane, Salt & Pepa and others).

In 1991, the Mop Top/Elite Force team was formed, who has worked with many famous artists (Michael Jackson, Will Smith, Mariah Carey) and popularized hip-hop dance with the help of clips. The members of the team were Budda Stretch, Link, Caleaf, Ejoe, as well as Peter Paul, Ramir, Tone, Casper, Aid and Luz Joint, Ruberband, Pikabu, Marquez, Quito and Prancer - they were from the Mystidious Misfits team.

If initially hip-hop dance was only in clubs and they learned it from each other there, then with the increased popularity of the dance there was a need to learn it. Hip-hop began to be taught in dance studios, making it accessible all over the world. More about hip-hop and RnB.

The basis of hip-hop dance

The basis of hip-hop dance is quality (groove)- this is a feeling of body movement to the beat of music; for a dancer this is not only some kind of constant movement, which keeps the tempo, and on which basic movements are then superimposed, but a deeper experience of involvement in the music. There can be no other opinion here - no groove, no hip-hop. For comparison, you can watch other dances with groove (there are many videos on the Divadance website different styles dance): house, dancehall, locking, popping, breaking, and styles that do not have groove: jazz, contemporary dance, classical dance.

Hip-hop dance has its own basics that every dancer should know. Not knowing basic movements is like trying to speak another language without knowing a single word or knowing only a few.

Types of hip-hop base:

The base of hip-hop is divided by the time when the movements were invented:

  • old school- 80s,
  • middle school- 90s,
  • new school- after 2000.

To the old school include Smurf, The Prep, Fila (The Rambo), Happy Feet, Cabbage Patch, Reebok and others.

TO high school : Running Man, Roger Rabbit, Party Machine, Bart Simpson, Steve Martin and others.

The new school includes: Tone-Whop, Monestary, Harlem Shake, Walk it out, ATL Stomp, etc.

New movements continue to be created to this day, and the style continues to evolve.

Hip-hop dance was and remains an improvisational style to dance here and now, create something new, express yourself, immersing yourself in music. There is nothing wrong with hip-hop choreography if it is based on knowledge and understanding of the basics, but, unfortunately, there are too many teachers who do not know the basics, do not know how to improvise, and dance only in combinations. This is not hip-hop, something only vaguely reminiscent of it. If you love what you do, devote a lot of time to it, understand, learn new things, do not deceive yourself and others.

Hip-hop dance is considered a youth phenomenon, a temporary phenomenon, but this is not so. People who started dancing it in the 80s continue to dance it today (and we are glad to see this in Divadance) and do not look stupid, but only command respect and admiration.

Age is not important, the only thing that matters is what hip-hop dance carries in itself - it is freedom to move, freedom to express yourself, understanding music, respect for yourself and others, positive communication!
