: I would say about the Germans what Voltaire said about God: if the Germans did not exist, it would be worth inventing them, for nothing unites the Slavs so successfully as the hatred of the Germans that is ingrained in them.

Bakunin:
The Slavs are politically children.
Bakunin:
Damn all the Slavs, with all their military future, if after many years of slavery, torment, silence they must bring new chains to humanity!
Bakunin:
Among our Slavophiles there are several honest people, who seriously believe that the Russian people are eager to fly to the aid of the “brothers Slavs,” whose existence they do not even know. He would be extremely surprised if they told him that he himself is a Slavic people.
Bakunin:
It is true that not a single Slavic tribe created a state by itself.
Bakunin:
In German blood, in German instinct, in German tradition have passion public order and state discipline, but in the Slavs not only does this passion not exist, but completely opposite passions act and live; therefore, in order to discipline them, one must keep them under the stick, while every German, with conviction, freely ate the stick. His freedom lies precisely in the fact that he is trained and willingly bows down to any authority...
Bakunin:
The Germans seek their life and freedom in the state; For the Slavs, the state is a coffin.
Bakunin:
The Slavs... will remain extremely insignificant and poor as long as they continue to fuss over their narrow, egoistic and at the same time abstract Slavism.
Bakunin:
Bakunin:
Education great Slavic state is nothing more than the formation of a huge Slavic people's slavery.
Nikolay Nekrasov:
Where, if not in a storm, can Slavic nature turn around?
N.Ya. Danilevsky:
The fight against the West is the only saving grace both for curing our Russian cultural ills and for the development of pan-Slavic sympathies, for them to absorb petty discord between different Slavic tribes and directions.

Despite the fact that the history of the Slavic peoples goes back to ancient times, official science is in no hurry to popularize this fact. To this day, some publications refer to the German historians Miller and Schlozer, thanks to whom an extremely dishonest and one-sided version of the history of Rus' became widespread; it is not for nothing that the great Lomonosov considered their works a collection of absurdities and fabrications:

“In Miller, on almost every page, Russians are beaten, robbed safely... This is so wonderful that if Miller had been able to portray a living calm, he would have made Russia such a poor people as no other (...) people from any writer has yet presented..."

Schlozer stated without a shadow of a doubt: “In Rus' before Rurik there were, of course, people, but people without a state; they lived like forest animals, did not stand out in any way, without any communication with the world and therefore were not noted or described by any of the cultured Europeans... Wild, rude Slavs began to become public people only through the mediation of the Germans, who were destined to scatter the first seeds of civilization in the northwestern and northeastern worlds.”

And this is written by a man who not only did not read the ancient chronicles, but also failed to learn the Russian language, despite the fact that he lived in Russia until the end of his days!

August Schlozer and Gerhard Miller

It is difficult to argue with the fact that the antiquity of Slavic roots was deliberately hidden for centuries. But are there really no sources confirming the true age of the history of the Aryan Slavs, which, of course, is not limited to the one and a half thousand years allotted to it by the Millers and Schläzers?

Of course, we should not forget that many ancient sources have disappeared or been destroyed. The famous Alexandria, Constantinople, and Athens libraries burned down. Traces of the book depositories of Ivan the Terrible and Yaroslav the Wise have been lost. And how many other valuable chronicle materials were destroyed in Rus'!

But, nevertheless, today we can find in ancient and later authors whole line confirmations of antiquity and the great past of the Slavic peoples. Many famous historians, writers, rulers or generals have not ignored this topic.

Homer and Herodotus were among the first to do this. True, in their works the Slavic-Aryan peoples are mentioned under the names Wends, Venets, Wends, Ants, Enets, Rugs, Scythians and Serbs.

Herodotus, nicknamed the father of history, gave one of the first descriptions of the ancient inhabitants of the Black Sea region: “Among all the peoples known to us, only the Scythians have one, but the most important art. It consists in the fact that they do not allow any enemy who attacks their country to escape.”.

Almost two and a half millennia later, the King of Prussia, Frederick II, famous for his belligerence, practically repeated these words: “Avoid collisions with cruel and invincible people. Russians descend from the Scythians, who destroyed the Roman Empire..."

Frederick II

As we can see, Frederick has no shadow of doubt about the Scythian roots of the Russians. But in order to clarify the topic of the alleged “cruelty” of Slavic warriors, we cite the words of another author - Mauritius the Strategist (6-7 centuries AD, Byzantium), who wrote the famous treatise on the art of war “Strategikon”. In the treatise, a rather impressive part is devoted to the Slavic peoples; from this document we learn that “the tribes of the Slavs and Ants... are numerous and hardy, easily enduring heat, cold, rain, nakedness of the body, and lack of food. They are kind and friendly towards foreigners who come to them. They do not hold those who are in captivity in slavery for an indefinite period of time, like other tribes, but, having determined an exact period for them, leave them at their discretion: either they wish to return home for a certain ransom, or they will remain there as free people and friends…"

A little earlier, almost the same thing was stated by the Byzantine historian and writer Procopius of Caesarea (507 - 565): “The laws prohibit attacking others in order to take possession of their property and people, just as they prohibit trafficking in people. Therefore, they do not have slaves, but they all work without distinction of position or position...”

Procopius notes not only fearlessness and peacefulness, but also the high spirituality of the Slavic peoples.

Many ancient Roman, Gothic, Italian, Arab, German, as well as Russian and other famous historians, travelers, geographers, writers and other outstanding people of their time wrote about their power, way of life, and territory.

But, perhaps, the Italian priest Mauro Orbini spoke most unequivocally about 400 years ago in his book "The Slavic Kingdom" (published in 1601): "The Slavic race is older than the pyramids and so numerous that it inhabited half the world".

Under the heading “Greats of the Slavs” there should undoubtedly be later names of the first magnitude - Catherine the Great and Mikhail Vasilyevich Lomonosov.

The Russian Empress wrote: “The Slavs in the east, west and north possessed so many regions that there was hardly a piece of land left in Europe that they did not touch.”.

M.V. Lomonosov, a Russian genius and universal scientist, in his historical research had the opportunity to work with now disappeared chronicles and ancient sources, in particular, he relied on the works of Pliny, Ptolemy, Strabo. He presented his conclusions in an extensive historical work, of which a small part has survived to this day, but the surviving information is enough to seriously reconsider many of the postulates of modern historical science.

Scientists of subsequent centuries spoke about the antiquity and greatness of the Slavs - Chertkov, Klassen, Volansky and many others.

The topic “Greats of the Slavs,” of course, is not limited to the cited authors and their quotes. Contrary to the idea that too little information about the antiquity of the Slavic peoples has survived to this day, there is a lot of such materials. For example, quite a lot of Serbian and Bulgarian sources have survived, from which one can glean rich information about the distant past of the Slavic Ancestors. That is why scientists from these countries almost immediately recognized the authenticity of the “Book of Veles” - they found in it direct confirmation of the information contained in their chronicles and legends.

Today, scientists are discovering more and more new materials. The first version of Orbini’s works was found and translated into Russian, making it possible to read this work in its original form, without abbreviations. Archaeological finds of the current decades have caused a new surge of interest in the history of the Slavic peoples, and hundreds of books exploring this topic have been published. Thanks to these studies, we can say with confidence that the roots of the Slavs-Aryans go back to the deep past, which dates back no less than 4-5 tens of thousands of years, and, according to a number of experts, this age is an order of magnitude older. In our next articles we will talk in more detail about outstanding people who touched on this topic in different countries, V different times and eras.

Humanity, responsiveness and sympathy for joys and suffering are generally inherent in the soul of a Slav. This soul is least susceptible to outbursts of crude egoism, so characteristic of the Germanic race, or arrogant affectation, so characteristic of the Romanesque. The Slav’s responsiveness and sympathy for others reaches the point of self-forgetfulness, to complete disregard for one’s own self. This can be clearly established by general character cultural development in Russia, as to a large extent in other nationalities of the Slavic tribe.

Slaveykov Pencho - Bulgarian poet, XIX-XX centuries.

Tokutomi I. - Japanese historian, 20th century.

Our artillery was captured in the battle of Tarutino, the artillerymen were disarmed and taken away. That same evening, the Cossacks who captured them, celebrating their victory, decided to end the day, joyful for them and bitter for us, national dances, and, of course, the drink was not forgotten. Their hearts softened, they wanted to make everyone part of the fun and joy, they remembered their prisoners and invited them to take part in the fun. Our poor artillerymen at first took advantage of this offer as a respite from their mortal fatigue, but then little by little, impressed by the friendly treatment, they joined in the dancing and took a sincere part in it. The Cossacks liked it so much that they became completely relaxed, and when mutual friendship reached highest point, our French dressed in full form, took up arms and, after the most cordial handshakes, hugs and kisses, parted with the Cossacks and were sent home.

And here is how the French treated our prisoners:

“In Mozhaisk there were more than 10,000 wounded Russians, housed in houses and churches, all of them were mercilessly expelled, and wounded French were placed in their beds. This measure cost the lives of the unfortunate Russians; they all died in terrible agony.”

Everywhere the French prisoners were treated very kindly and even well. For each prisoner, with a free apartment and heating, 50 kopecks were given. per officer and 15 kopecks. on a soldier. Those prisoners who knew any skill or had any talent were very much valued and earned good money.

In Ungheni I noticed a sentry guarding two Turkish prisoners. I had beef pies and offered them to the sentry. Thinking that I had only one pie, he refused and invited me to give it to the Turk, who, in his opinion, was hungrier than he. When the Turk, having received the pie, began to pray, the sentry, turning to his other comrades, said in a whisper: “Hush, be silent, the Turk is praying.” Everyone fell silent.

The ship's visit, as they said in the city's prefecture, evoked two feelings: delight and annoyance. Delight in the fact that Toulonians did not know such correct, well-mannered and delicate military sailors as the Soviet ones. And the annoyance for wasted francs. The fact is that the prefecture, before similar visits from other fleets, pays for additional forces to restore order in the city. The city especially “shudders” during the arrival of British warships. This time the prefect was very sad for the money wasted from the city treasury. It would be better, he noted, if they went towards gifts for Soviet sailors.

Russian law establishes that any find is immediately included in the Prikaz, where the name of the person who brought it, the day the item was found and brought, as well as the item itself are recorded. Inanimate things are kept in the Prikaz, and animals are kept in the royal stable. Therefore, anyone who has lost any thing inquires about it in the Order, and if it is an animal, then looks for it in the royal stable.

In one of these expeditions, the Emperor’s favorite, who was in charge of his personal guard, Colonel Rato, died. Seeing a hundred or one and a half Cossacks in front of him, who also began to retreat, Rato chased after them and was ambushed. All the dragoons were cut down, Rato was seriously wounded and captured, where he died a few days later.

The dragoon regiment, believing that their comrade had only been captured, collected and sent him 1,200 francs. This money was received by Prince Kutuzov after the death of Rato and was immediately returned to the regiment with notification of the death of the brave officer.

“The Slavs earned themselves this glorious name thanks to weapons, and the hereditary right to bear weapons belongs to the Slavs in to a greater extent than all other peoples in the world."

Bernard Justinian

“However, leaving aside the above interpretations of the name of the Slavs, I dare to say that it came from nothing other than glory, since Slav means “glorious.” After such frequent triumphs over their enemies, as evidenced by the huge number of conquered kingdoms and countries, this most valiant people appropriated to themselves the very name of glory. The names of many noble and eminent men end with “glory”: Stanislav, Wenceslaus, Ladislav, Dobroslav, Radoslav, Boleslav.”

Mauro Orbini

“Then the proud Slavic people invaded Istria and reached the borders of Venetia. At that time, many tribes attacked the Roman Empire, but the Slavs, a people of Scythian origin, earned themselves a glorious name for their military prowess. Thus, this valiant people should have been called nothing other than the Slavs, and that is exactly what many learned men called them... If the name of the Slavs is new, then the glory won by arms and blood is inherent in them and inherited from their ancestors who won glorious victories. victories in Asia, Europe and Africa. They were called Vandals, Goths, Alans, Dacians, Normans. They were all Slavs and had the same language.”

Bernard Justinian, Venetian historian, writer

“The Slavic people embittered almost all the peoples in the Universe with their weapons; He ruined Persia: he ruled Asia and Africa, he fought with the Egyptians and with the great Alexander; conquered Greece, Macedonia, Illyrian land; he took possession of Moravia, the land of Schlaen, Czech, Polish, and the shores of the Baltic Sea, went to Italy, where he fought against the Romans for a long time. Sometimes he was defeated, sometimes, fighting in battle, he took revenge on the Romans with a great massacre; sometimes, fighting in battle, he was equal. Finally, having subdued the Roman Empire, he took possession of many of their provinces, ruined Rome, making the Caesars of Rome tributaries, which no other people in the whole world had done. He owned France, England, and established power in Spain; took possession of the best provinces in Europe."

Mauro Orbini, Italian historian (1601)

“In 480 before the founding of Rome, the Egyptian king Vesos, wanting to confuse the south and north, separated by almost an entire sky and sea belt, by war, and annex them to his kingdom, was the first to declare war on the Scythians, sending envoys ahead to announce to the enemies the terms of submission. To this the Scythians respond that it was stupid for the richest king to undertake a war against the poor, for he, on the contrary, should be afraid that, in view of the unknown outcome of the war, he would be left without any benefits and with obvious losses. Then they don’t have to wait for someone to come to them, but they themselves will go towards the prey. They do not hesitate, and action follows their word. First of all, they force Vesoz himself to flee in fear to his kingdom, attack the abandoned army and take away all military supplies. Returning immediately, they conquered all of Asia and made it their tributary..."

Pavel Orosiy, ancient Roman historian

“Egypt is an Old Russian, Old Slavonic word. Some argue that the term "Egypt" (Aigyptos) comes from the Phoenician "Hikupta" - a corruption of the Egyptian "Hatkapta" (lit. Hatka Pta, "Temple of Ptah") From this it can be seen that the first part of the word "hatkapta", hatka -, is derived from Russian khata and literally means “house, mansion, temple.” The second part - pta - Russian. bird, birdie, birdie. Thus, the “Egyptian” “khatkapta” in Russian means “house of the bird”, “temple of the bird”.

Max Vasmer, German linguist (1886 - 1962)

“This people is courageous to the point of madness, brave and strong... The Russians, who acquired the glory of victors from neighboring peoples, they considered it a terrible disaster to lose it, they fought desperately... They say that defeated Scythians never surrender to the enemy alive, but by plunging swords into their bellies, they kill themselves. They do this because of their opinion that those killed in battle after their death or separation of soul from body serve their killers in hell, therefore, fearing this slavery, fearing to serve their enemies, they stab themselves to death.”

Leo Deacon, Byzantine historian (971)

“For a long time we, the Greeks, have called these heroes Rossichs, or Russ. Russian men are valiant warriors. During raids, few slaves can be taken from these Slavs, and they all prefer death to captivity.”

Zachary, rhetorician (5th century AD)

“They (Scythians, Alans) had no concept of slavery, being all of the same noble origin, and they still choose as judges persons who have long been distinguished by military exploits.”

Ammianus Marcellinus, ancient Roman historian

“The tribes of the Sklavs and Ants (Slavs) are the same in their way of life and in their morals; free, they are in no way inclined either to become slaves or to obey, especially in their own land. They are numerous and hardy, easily enduring heat, cold, rain, nakedness of the body, and lack of food. They are kind and friendly towards foreigners who arrive to them, escorting them one by one from place to place, wherever they need to go; so if harm is caused to a guest through the carelessness of the one who received him, the one who brought the guest begins to enmity against him, considering revenge for him a sacred duty. They do not keep those who are in captivity in slavery for an indefinite period, like other tribes, but, having determined an exact period for them, leave them at their discretion: either they wish to return home for a certain ransom, or they will remain there as free people and friends. They have a variety of livestock and grains stored in stacks, especially millet and spelt. Their wives are chaste beyond all human nature, so that many of them honor the death of their husbands own death and voluntarily strangle themselves, not considering life in widowhood. They live among forests, rivers, swamps and difficult lakes, arranging many exits from their homes from different sides due to the dangers that usually overtake them..."

Mauritius, Byzantine emperor (VI century)

“The Slavs are excellent warriors, because with them military science becomes a harsh science in every detail. The highest happiness in their eyes is to die in battle. To die of old age or from any accident is a shame, nothing more humiliating than which can be. They are generally handsome and tall; their hair is light brown. Their look is more warlike than ferocious... They often make raids, surprise attacks and various tricks day and night and, so to speak, play with war... Their greatest art is that they know how to hide in rivers under water. Often, caught by the enemy, they lie for a very long time at the bottom and breathe with the help of long reed tubes, the end of which they take into their mouths, and the other sticks out to the surface of the water and thus hide in the depths.”

Antique sources

“Among all the peoples known to us, only the Scythians have one, but the most important art. It consists in the fact that they do not allow any enemy who attacks their country to escape.”

Herodotus, ancient Greek historian

“Russ are snow, fields, amazing musical instruments, joy at funerals, linen shirts, boots, wine, honey. And they are also the sadness of kings, since it is difficult to defeat them.”

Al-Gharnati, Arab geographer

“Russia extends to the north “all the way.” This is a vast country and is extremely richly endowed by nature with everything that is necessary for life. Its inhabitants have bad character- disobedient, defiant, love to argue, belligerent. They fight with all the infidels who live around their country and win victories. The Russians respect their Magi."

Arab-Persian sources

“This people is powerful, they have a large physique, great courage, they do not know flight, not one of them runs away until they kill or are killed. It is their custom for everyone to carry weapons... I heard from people who witnessed these Rus, amazing stories about their courage and their disdain for the Muslims gathered against them. One day, five Rus people gathered in one of the gardens of Berdaa; Among them was a beardless young man, clean-faced, the son of one of their commanders, and with them several female captives. When the Muslims learned of their presence, they surrounded the garden. Gathered big number Daylemites and others to fight these five people. They tried to get at least one prisoner from them, but there was no approach to this, because not one of them surrendered. And until then they could not be killed until they killed several times larger number Muslims The beardless youth was the last one alive. When he noticed that he would be taken prisoner, he climbed a tree that was close to him and stabbed himself with his dagger in fatal places until he fell dead.”

Ibn Miskaweih, Arab historian (944)

“The ancient custom of the Slavs was not to live constantly in one place... They always lived in tents, fought, were free and indomitable. During the time of Augustus Caesar and after him, the Slavs conquered almost all of Europe, and most of Asia and Africa... This brave Slavic people was never at peace... They intended to leave the Sarmatian deserts, divided into 2 parts, one went to the North and populated the shores Baltic Sea for 250 German miles across Germany, Prussia, Livonia and the shores opposite Denmark and Finland, right up to Vyborg, and this country was called Veneda, in German Wenden, in Italian Glory, and other peoples called them Vandals... Another part of the Sarmatian Slavs went to the south, populated the banks of the Danube and from there made attempts to take possession of the Roman state, the lands and provinces of which were so weakened that they finally conquered many of them... The Slavic people did not have an autocratic system, but from ancient times they enjoyed universal freedom. All actions, useful or harmful, were discussed at their general council. The elders among the Slavs recognized only Perun (that is, the Thunderer) as God, the Lord of the one universe, to whom bulls and other animals were to be sacrificed.”

Mauro Orbini, Italian historian (1601)

“The concept of justice was instilled in the Scythians by their own minds, and not by laws. Their most serious crime is theft. They do not have a passion for gold and silver, like other mortals..."

Pompey Trog, ancient Roman historian

“These peoples, the Slavs and Antes, are not subject to autocratic power, but from ancient times they have lived under the command of the whole people. Benefits and harms are universally accepted. Also, other affairs of both peoples have been maintained since ancient times. The Lord professes one God, the creator of thunder and the whole world. They offer him oxen and other sacrifices. The destinies do not recognize and do not attribute to her any actions in the human race. Having fallen into illness or preparing for war and seeing death close, they make a promise to God that if they are freed from it, they will immediately make a sacrifice. Having received what they wanted, they quickly fulfill their promise and believe that their lives were saved by this sacrifice. Moreover, they worship rivers and other waters, as well as some other gods, whom they all serve and, by making sacrifices, they guess about the future. They live in huts, scattered separately and often move from one place to another... The warriors’ shields are made of ox leather, light, and all their weapons are light. Elbow-length swords and short knives. The iron is sonorous and such that our sword can cut, but it will not become jagged. When they go out to battle, many go on foot with shields and spears; they don't wear armor. Others, without clothes on their shoulders, fight the enemy in only their pants. Both have the same language - strange. All of them are tall and have immeasurably strong limbs, with light brown hair. The laws prohibit attacking others in order to take possession of their property and people, just as they prohibit trafficking in people. Therefore, they do not have slaves, but they all work without distinction of position or position... Prisoners, if they want to stay with them and get married, enjoy the same equality, while others are released and provided for everyone on the road... They are not evil and not cunning, but frank and good-natured..."

Procopius of Caesarea, Byzantine historian

“This people professes the religion of magicians (as the Arabs called supporters of the Aryan religion). Among the tribes of these places there is no people of more refined appearance, with purer faces, no more handsome men and more beautiful women. More slender, thinner in the waist, with a clearer line of hips and buttocks, and no people at all better looking than this one. They dress in white, in Rum brocade, in bright scarlet fabric...”

Masudi, Arab traveler

“When I arrived in the country of the Slavs, I saw that this country was vast, abundant in honey and wheat, and barley and big apples, better than which there is nothing. They pay each other with old squirrel skins, which can never be used for anything. And for each of these skins they give an excellent round bread, which is enough for a strong man.”

Abu Hamid al Garnati, Arabic writer, traveler

“I saw the Rus when they arrived on their trading business and settled down near the Atyl River. I have not seen people with more perfect bodies than them. They are like palm trees, fair-haired, beautiful in face and white in body. They wear neither jackets nor hats, but their man wears a pussy, which covers one side, with one of the arms coming out of it. And each of them has an axe, a sword and a knife, and he never parted with all this.”

Ibn Fadlan, Arab merchant (922)

“No nation was as great as the Vandals, who brought their colonies to Asia, Africa and Europe. In Europe they settled all the way from north to south, from the German Sea to the Mediterranean. Therefore, Muscovites, Russians, Poles, Bohemians, Cherkasy, Bulgarians and many other peoples, although they differ in name, are nevertheless all one Vandal nation. This also proves their mutual language and adverb."

Mauro Orbini, Italian historian (1601)

“In former times there were many Gothic tribes, and there are many of them now, but the largest and most powerful of them were the Goths, the Vandals, formerly called Sarmatians. They all differed in name, but agreed on everything else. They all had fair skin, long brown hair reaching to their shoulders, a large build and a pleasant appearance. They had the same laws, they all professed Arianism, had the same language, and, it seems to me, they came from the same tribe, later accepting various names by the names of their commanders."

Procopius of Caesarea, Byzantine historian

“They, having left Scandinavia, the common fatherland of all Slavs, divided into two parts. One part went to Asia and settled near the Northern Mountains; now they are called Tatars. Others, uniting with the Vandals and Burgundians, expelled the French and called themselves Scythians, but some writers call them Dacians. But it would be better to call them Goths, since both spoke the same language. The Alans, the Slavs, were neighbors of the Amazons... even spread to the Ganges River, which divides India into two parts and flows into the South Sea... They did not build any tents or houses, did not plow the land, but ate meat and a lot of milk. They constantly lived on carts covered with tree bark and carried these carts with them across the vast steppes... Every country they came to seemed to them their own... Young people learned to ride horses, since walking on foot was considered humiliating among them. Almost all of them were skilled warriors, tall, had very beautiful faces, medium brown hair, beautiful and menacing eyes. They were very fast... hunting animals, they reached the Meotian (Azov) Sea, the Throat of the Cimmerian (Kerch Strait), Armenia and Media... Those who died of old age were considered fools and slackers. Glorious among them was the one who was killed in the war. They did not take prisoners, but cut off the head of the defeated enemy, tore off his skin and put it on their horses, and with such decorations they led the horses into battle. They had neither a Church, nor a Temple, nor Priests, nor special Gods, but taking sabers out of their scabbards and sticking them into the ground, they worshiped them as God Mars, in whom they believed as the patron of all those places where they fought. They had wondrous knowledge about the future, which they divined by collecting certain straight twigs and disassembling them at a certain time, accompanying this with certain spells. Serfdom was not used among them, since they believed that they all belonged to a noble family. They had elected rulers and judges, choosing them from the most skillful and knowledgeable in military affairs. They attacked Palestine, Egypt and Judea, which suffered terrible destruction during the time of King Vespasian. They ravaged Media, Armenia, during the time of Decius they took Byzantium... The Alans, joining other Slavic peoples - the Vandals, the Burgundians - under the leadership of their common prince Simgiban, took possession of Gaul (France). From there they marched into Spain and captured part of Spain, calling it Alania, which is now mispronounced Catalonia. Not satisfied with this, they advanced on Portugal, where they established their Kingdom for some time ... "

Mauro Orbini, Italian historian (1601)

“Glory from the same Scandinavia burst into Pannonia during the time of Justinian; then this people flooded all of Europe, bringing their own language and names. I heard that Bohemians, Poles, Lithuanians, Dalmatians, Muscovites, Bosnians, Bulgarians, Serbs and Vandals spoke this Slavic language, which they brought from Scandinavia and differs only in dialects. No one sought to settle in Scythia, although the Scythians themselves conquered Spain, Italy and Greece.”

Jean Bodin, French historian (1530 - 1596)
