General information about the icon

“The Leaping of the Child” is a Russian icon, the prototype of which was the Greek model. It belongs to the type of iconography of Eleus, which means “merciful”. This holy image is one of the common types of images of the Virgin Mary “Tenderness”. All the holy paintings in this category, in one way or another, demonstrate the strength of the emotional and spiritual connection between the Most Pure One and the Infant God, all the thrill of feelings between the Mother of God and little Jesus. At the same time, through these images, icon painters tried to express the love felt by God for humanity.

Holy images like Eleus show a kind of standard of human relationships. This becomes clear just by looking at the already mentioned “Leaping of the Child” icon or the similar “Vladimir” icon, for example: on these canvases, mother and son are depicted cuddling each other cheek to cheek. The Savior sits on the hand of the Mother of God, his head is thrown back, one hand touches his mother’s face. This gesture reveals unspoken tenderness, and the very image of the Infant God expresses the strength of the Savior’s human essence.

According to a number of scientists, the plot of the shrine “Leaping of the Child” was formed under the influence of certain scenes that take place in the Gospel. The prince was surprised and very happy at this sign, considering it a blessing from heaven for the battle. He exclaimed: “This whole sin has warmed my heart!” Afterwards, Dimitri Donskoy swore that if he won the upcoming battle, he would certainly build a monastery on the site of the appearance of the image of the saint of God. As you already understand, the holy prince fulfilled his promise. The revealed icon of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker became the symbol of the above-mentioned monastery.
