Dad is the head of the popular VIA Gems in the 70s, Yuri Malikov, his older brother is pop singer, composer and pianist Dmitry Malikov. With such “heredity,” Inna Malikova, of course, could not pass by the music school. She graduated from college at the Moscow Conservatory, but then chose a theater university - GITIS. Her acting skills came in handy on stage, because the group led by Inna, “New Gems,” specializes in performing hits from the 70s and 80s. Ten years ago, Inna created “New Gems” with her father’s blessing. And today, in her opinion, this is the best cover band in the country. But our conversation is not only about a successful career. Now that Dima’s son is already quite an adult, Inna is ready to talk about the dramatic events of the recent past...
Inna, ten years is still a milestone. Where will the New Gems go next?
We have dedicated ten years to giving new life beautiful songs of the Soviet past. And I believe that we have coped with this task. This spring we are opening new page stories: now our repertoire includes not only old, favorite hits, but also songs created especially for us.
Who creates these songs for you? Not your brother?
No, we have wonderful authors. My brother and I don’t overlap in terms of creativity. Dima has his own way, I have mine. I have been working with my team for ten years, Dima devoted these ten years to educational programs, traveled to more than 100 cities in Russia with master classes. It would be wrong to load it with “New Gems” as well.

Everyone in your family is musicians. Why did your son, who, by the way, is also named Dima, break tradition?
Dima plays the piano beautifully and has performed several times with his uncle Dima on his solo concerts. At one time he really wanted to go on stage, but not to sing, but to play, because, despite his musicality and excellent hearing, he (smiles), like everyone else in the Malikov family, does not have outstanding vocal abilities. But it so happened that one day my son was left at home alone... cold, hungry... (Smiles.) And for the first time he decided to cook his own food. Then I cooked it again, but this time for the family. And he realized that cooking was his life’s work.
And what are his plans for the future?
Last summer, while he was interning in Italy, his mentors advised him to enroll at The Institute Paul Bocuse in France. Dima was fired up by this idea. I learned French in six months, because they only accept people with knowledge of the language. And now he has already entered there.
What dishes does he please you with?
He cooks everything from salads to pasta. Even a simple potato can be made extraordinary.
Aren't you afraid to gain weight?
Afraid. (Smiles.) It’s hard for me, but I’m holding on. Sometimes I come home late on purpose. Luckily, he doesn't cook every day. Sometimes he can go somewhere with friends to a cafe to have a snack.
So you are completely free from cooking at home?
Cooking is not my thing at all. I have always been the head of cleaning in the house. The ability to cook deliciously was passed on to Dima from his dad.
Is Dima's father also a fan of his culinary creativity?
Vladimir, Dima’s dad, and I broke up five years ago. Dima was 12 years old then. Now they communicate very little. But I'm sure everything will change.
Why did you split up with your husband?
It turned out that we are complete opposites in everything. When we met, when he was courting me, I didn’t see it. He was very gentle, attentive and kind with me. I was 21 years old at the time, he was five years older. He is an accomplished businessman, and I studied at GITIS and was just starting my singing career. But love is one thing, but family life- completely different. Gradually, traits of his character began to appear that I could not reconcile with. I am a creative person, very sociable. He is not creative, not very sociable, and also quite tough. And I had other examples before my eyes. There has always been complete equality in our family. No one dominated anyone, relatively speaking, did not hit the table with their fist: “It must be as I said.” Vladimir has been trying to change me all these years. Useless. Did not work out. We, of course, tried to maintain the relationship: there were comings and goings, conversations, persuasion. But suddenly the moment came when I realized that was it. Point of no return. Then I just packed my things, closed the door behind me and went to my parents. Since that moment we have not communicated with him.
In what ways did your spouse limit you? Did he not want you to perform?
Yes, I didn't want to. But that's not the point. He was jealous of everything that surrounded me, be it work or friends. For him, only he, me and our son existed. But for me this is not enough. I am very attached to my parents, I have many friends, girlfriends, I have a wonderful team, an interesting, eventful life. And for me this is all important too.
Probably, such a powerful person is unlikely to easily come to terms with the fact that you are leaving and your son is staying with you?
Yes, the first year after the breakup was difficult. There really was a question about who Dima would live with next. Vladimir tried to defend his right to raise a child. But in the end everything was resolved successfully - Dima stayed with me.
Does Dima have some kind of grudge against his father?
I don't think he has any deep grudge against him. They just didn't have enough mutual understanding. IN family relationships the main thing is mutual understanding. Anything can happen, but if people are able to negotiate with each other, then this is a huge plus. Dima’s dad didn’t want to negotiate with any of us. He wanted both Dima and I to be the way he wanted us to be. He demanded our absolute submission, and Dima and I each have our own character. Although we get along well with each other.
Dima probably wants his mother to be happy not only with him.
Of course, although it seems to me that he doesn’t think much about my personal life. He cares more about his own matters of the heart, believe me.
But now you have a loved one...
Yes, I have. (Smiles.) Although, in general, I am absolutely self-sufficient. I feel good on my own. And yet it is impossible to be alone all the time. Thank God I met a man I can trust. Our relationship is just beginning. But I am absolutely sure that the best in my life is yet to come.

Inna Malikova was born on January 1, 1977 in Moscow, in the family of Yuri Malikov, People's Artist of Russia, founder of the VIA "Gems", and Lyudmila Vyunkova, former soloist Moscow Music Hall.
