Let's learn to draw beautifully. Pencil drawing lessons

First, a little theory. It may probably seem that theory is not very important, but studying theory is one of the main stages in the development of artists. To learn to draw realistic sketches you need to know nine basic laws of drawing:

1. Perspective: those figures that are closer seem large, and those that are far away seem small.

2. Position: those figures that are located lower on the sheet, they visually seem closer.

3. Dimensions: the larger the figure is drawn, the closer it will appear.

4. Overlap: the object that is drawn in front of another object visually appears closer

5. Shadow: the plane on which the figure is located should be darker on the opposite side than the light source.

6. Fill: that part of the figure that will be located on the other side of the source from which the light will come, this part should be the darkest in order to produce the effect of depth.

7. Contour lines: in order to draw round shapes, you need to draw contour lines.

8. Horizon line: you need to draw a horizon line to draw a three-dimensional image.

9. Distance: to create an imitation of the distance between figures, distant figures need to be depicted a little lighter and drawn less clearly.

Without following these laws, you will not be able to draw a picture. Knowledge of the nine basic laws of drawing is the basis for successful learning to draw. The more often you draw and apply these laws, the sooner you will begin to remember them, and it will become increasingly easier to use them and apply them in practice.

Important Principles

The next step after learning the basic laws of drawing is to know the three tricks that you should always remember: attitude, detail and practice.

1. Mood: in order to tune in to positive work, you need to convince yourself that you are ready and say that everything is within your power! Only with positive thoughts can you learn and apply new artistic skills.

2. Details: adding different details makes the drawing more alive, and if you try to add something new, perhaps the drawing will turn out much more unusual.

3. Practice: in order to master perfectly the skills that you have learned, these skills must be used every day at work to consolidate them.

Training these principles is very important for developing artistic skills.

Tools

The next stage is the selection of the necessary drawing tools; they should be convenient and practical:

1. You will need a notebook or album. Although any paper can be used to start drawing, it can be plain white or it can be tinted, thin or thick. If you decide to use special paper, you will certainly be able to achieve much better results than with plain paper. It is important to know what raw materials the drawing paper is made from. Paper tester, test grain size has
greater value.

There are two types of paper, fine grain paper and coarse grain paper. If you take fine-grained paper, then this type of paper will be suitable for any type of drawing, but coarse-grained paper is suitable for writing on it with watercolors. The artist himself chooses to draw on coarse-grained or fine-grained paper. Premium grade paper is marked with a watermark in the corner.

2. School pencils, which have four degrees of hardness: No. 1 - 2B, No. 2-B, No. 3-H, and No. 4 - 2H, are perfect for drawing sketches. In order to succeed good drawings, it is better to use pencils numbered 2 and 3. If you are serious about learning, it would be better to buy a complete set of drawing pencils top quality. There are 19 degrees of hardness: H - hard, HB and F - medium hard, B - soft.

3. Calendar and planning - one of the most important stages. In order to achieve good results in the future, you need to draw for at least twenty minutes every day. So for this you will need to create an action plan and constantly monitor the implementation of the plan.

Drawing stages

First step

First, you will need to take your pencil and calendar - now you will need to create a schedule for the lessons that you will do throughout the week. Of course, you need to take into account that there are other activities besides drawing, so even these twenty minutes can be divided and made into two 10-minute classes.

To achieve success, you need to work hard every day, acquire new skills, study techniques, review work famous artists for inspiration. After just a month of hard work, results will be visible.

Second step

The most important thing is to just sit down at the table and start drawing! When you sit down at the table, you will need to take a deep breath, and then you need to smile. Then take a piece of paper and put it in front of you and now try to draw.

Now you need to check yourself. First you will need to draw several objects. You need to relax! You must also understand that you are doing this for yourself, and only you can draw this picture. It is necessary that you now draw just such a drawing, which will then help you improve your skills in the future. But even if you feel lazy or just don’t want to draw this part of the picture, you will definitely have to force yourself to draw this moment of the picture. Then, by the end of the month, you yourself will understand that this was not done in vain!

Third step

Don't forget to show your work to more experienced artists, ask them for advice and listen carefully to their criticism, and then correct your mistakes. If you don't know any artists, there are many sites on the Internet where you can post your work and ask for advice.

Fourth step

Try it different techniques drawing and choose the most suitable one for yourself. If something doesn’t work out for you, don’t despair and try again, because you’re just learning and the skill will come with time.

You may think that in order to learn how to draw well, you need to take professional lessons, but this is not true. Simple drawing For your own pleasure, you can save money and improve your skills. To learn how to draw without taking a class, sketch with short strokes, apply shadows, highlight individual shapes in objects of various shapes, and practice as much as possible.

Steps

Part 1

Initial sketches

Choose an object to draw from life. If possible, find something meaningful to yourself, such as your favorite flower or your dog. On initial stage you will likely find it easier to draw from life than from memory or imagination. So if you draw something that you enjoy, it will help you concentrate.

    • If you're just trying to draw, you don't need any special ones yet. art materials. Any pen or pencil and paper on hand will do the job.
  1. Draw a general sketch with short strokes. Lightly press the pencil onto the paper. Concentrate on the line you are drawing, forgetting about the object itself. If you're drawing a dog, forget about it. Instead, start drawing its outlines. They represent the boundaries between the dog's body and its environment. Draw these outlines with short strokes.

    • The shorter your strokes are, the more accurate your sketch will be.
    • Don't criticize your work. Move quickly and perfect your strokes as you go.
  2. Draw in the details. Once the sketch of the object is ready in general outline, start drawing out its details. Try to identify distinctive features or marks on an object, for example, a chip on a cup or a tuft of hair on a dog, based on which you can place other nearby details in the drawing.

Apply shadows. Applying shadows will be a little more difficult, but they allow you to reflect the play of light and shadow in the drawing, and also create volume. Look from which side the object is illuminated by the sun. Then take a sharp pencil and evenly shade the penumbra areas. Once the pencil tip becomes dull, move on to shading the darker areas. To make the pencil leave darker strokes, press harder.

    • You can practice applying shadows by drawing a smooth scale of shadows. Start drawing the scale from the edge of the sheet. Move the pencil back and forth as you work. As you work, begin to press harder on the pencil to gradually make the strokes darker.
    • It is also useful to practice drawing a scale of achromatic colors. Divide the elongated rectangle into five sections. Leave the first section white. Paint the last section as much as possible dark color, as far as possible. In between these two sections (in the three central sections), distribute your strokes so that you get transitional (light to dark) shades of gray.
  3. Connect different geometric shapes into shapes. Learn to compose individual blocks from which the contours of an object are formed. For example, a table can be represented as a series of rectangles and cylinders, and a snake as a series of circles. As soon as you learn to identify individual geometric blocks in objects, you will be able to draw them even from memory (without nature).

    • Spend some time looking at the objects carefully and trying to fit them into individual geometric shapes.
  4. Sketch the subject from different angles. Assemble a drawing object from various forms. While working on the sketch, erase the unnecessary ones and draw the necessary lines so that the object in the drawing acquires the required shape. Once you've finished drawing this sketch, try drawing the same subject from other angles. For example, in profile, a horse's head may consist of a square nose, a circle of cheeks and a triangle of ears, but the same head can be drawn from many other angles.

    • Return to these sketches later to improve the rest of your drawings.
  5. Draw the selected object again. Next time, after correcting various errors in sketches from different angles, draw the object again. At first, you can even rely on prepared sketches. Build an object from basic geometric shapes, then draw its details and correct it possible errors. Once you have some experience, you will be able to draw this object in various poses, even from memory.

    • It is quite acceptable to make some simplifications in the drawing, they may even become yours individual style. For example, remembering the location of every single muscle on the body can take too much time.

    Part 3

    Learning drawing techniques
    1. Learn information about various drawing techniques. Your local library should have books about different styles drawing from realism to Japanese manga. Similar books can also be purchased in bookstores. For free drawing ideas and demos, search "how to draw (subject)" on Google or YouTube.

      • Anatomy books can also be a good source of information for realistic drawings. Learn to schematically draw the skeleton and muscles using them.
    2. Start working with additional materials. It's usually best to stick with one thing before you gain experience, such as pencil and paper. Then you can find alternatives that you like better and will help you develop own style, for example, start working with colored pencils or charcoal. In addition, even simple pencils come in different hardnesses, which allows you to expand your options for applying shadows.

      • TM (HB) pencils are considered standard. T-category (H) pencils are harder and suitable for drawing light lines. M-category (B) pencils are softer and suitable for drawing darker lines.
      • The degree of hardness and softness of pencils is expressed by a number. For hard pencils (T or H), the highest hardness is expressed as a nine, while for soft pencils (M or B), a nine indicates the highest softness.
      • Vinyl erasers and scratch marks don't damage paper like regular rubber erasers, but they won't erase colored pencils. Due to the plasticity of such erasers (they have a doughy consistency), they can be given any shape to accurately remove individual small parts pencil sketch.
    3. Learn to imagine the drawing process itself. When you're not busy drawing, look around. Think about how you could reflect the environment in the drawing. For example, imagine how you apply shadows around drawn eyes, draw pupils and irises. This line of thinking will allow you to think about working on the lines and creating your own style.

      • The goal is to learn to see details, not just general forms. Instead of thinking about the eye itself, think about the lines and colors that will allow you to draw that eye.
    4. Practice. Drawing is a lot like skills like playing the piano. musical instrument or cycling. As soon as you have free time, sit down and sketch. Practice shading and using different painting techniques. Work on sketching things from different angles. In between drawing sessions, simply spend time with objects that interest you so you can learn more about them without becoming overwhelmed.

    • Make it a habit to draw every day. With this habit, it will be easier for you to force yourself to practice, and you will improve your skills faster.
    • Don't be upset by the realization mistakes made. This perception stops many aspiring artists. Remember, even experienced artists continue to learn through their creativity.
    • It will take time to master fine hand coordination. Keep practicing, making short strokes on basic geometric shapes, and the results will improve over time.
    • There is no need to purchase expensive art materials. A notepad and simple pencils will be enough for studying.
    • Developing the skill of identifying individual geometric shapes in objects also takes time, but it helps to make more accurate sketches.

    Warnings

    • Someone, or even you yourself, may try to talk yourself out of this idea. But don't listen to those who say you don't have talent. Drawing needs to be learned, and if you enjoy doing it, just keep working on it.

Course No. 1 "LEARNING TO SEE AND DRAW LIKE AN ARTIST"

If you want to quickly learn how to draw, then so that your friends and acquaintances admire your drawings, then my course of 6 drawing lessons based on the method of one of the greatest draftsmen, Albrecht Durer, who worked at the turn of the 15th-16th centuries, will definitely help you.

Even if you don't know how to draw at all!

And if you are already a good drawer, then thanks to the course you will improve your technique and understand that you can draw anything from life - any still life, landscape, and even a portrait.
If you did not have a good artistic foundation, then you will discover a lot of new things for yourself, because I am talking about the basic fundamentals of drawing that are needed by both graphic draftsmen and painters.

The most important thing for an artist is to learn to see like an artist, and then capture what you see on canvas or paper.

.
ARTISTIC VISION

First of all, we will deal with the disclosure of artistic vision in the course, as well as we will learn to draw not objects and forms, but lines and spots.

Teaching a person to draw without developing his artistic vision is a pointless exercise. Because when ordinary person looks at the landscape, he sees the street, houses, trees, people. And when the Artist looks at this landscape, he sees lines and spots. If the Artist draws with a pencil at this moment, he sees dark and light spots; if he paints with paints, he sees colored dark and colored light spots.

The artist sees lines and spots, transfers them to the canvas, and the viewer distinguishes on the canvas - streets, houses, trees, people. This is such a magical transformation, and you can’t go anywhere without it.

If you wish learn to draw from life anything, regardless of shape and material, try to see not objects and objects, but lines and spots.
.
.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO SEE SPOTS AND LINES?

In proper drawing training, they teach general principles (formulas), thanks to which a novice Artist can draw all similar objects from life and imagination.

For example?

For example, if you watched the lessons on the site, you may have seen the following lesson: “SHADOWS ARE DIFFERENT, HOW TO CONVEY VOLUME.” In that lesson, I talked about how to make objects look three-dimensional by placing light and dark spots correctly: a highlight, light around the highlight, halftones (penumbra) around the light and shadow (the darkest places). This is a general formula for adding volume to any shape, from a ball to a person's face.

And it doesn’t even matter whether you know how to hatch or not! The main thing is to correctly find the place of dark and light spots.

I'll try to show with an example that it's as if I don't know how to hatch.
It looks something like this:

But if the object is at least a little transparent, then in our formula the light and shadow change places.

That is, there will always be a dark place around the highlight, and where opaque objects usually have the darkest shadow, transparent ones will have light.

Something like this:

Let's check this formula on grapes:

On an average bottle, everything is the same: there are dark spots around the highlights, halftones around the dark spots, and light spots in the shadow itself, only the shape of the spots changes:

And even the iris of the eye is drawn according to the principle (formula) of transparent objects:

So, just by swapping shadow and light when drawing any object, you can create the illusion of transparency! I hope you noticed that the principle of drawing and the stages of drawing different objects were the same.

It's called general principles.

Knowledge of general principles greatly facilitates the work of an Artist.

There is an even more general principle for drawing from life, and even more so from a photo, thanks to which you can learn to draw ANYTHING from life in a couple of weeks! The main thing is that all this can pose for you for a while

About this general principle I talk on my already famous course

"LET'S LEARN TO SEE AND DRAW LIKE AN ARTIST!"
basic course No. 1

BEFORE the training begins, I ask you to make test drawings so that after training the person can see for himself what he has learned during the course.

Vladimir Pritchenko (Servo-s):

Hurray! Yesterday I had to drive the happy smile off my face all day - otherwise I might have thought something wrong at work! The first, introductory hand, painted out of fear in 20 minutes, was given a large advance in the form of praise. Now we had to prove that it was not in vain that Mila had been fussing with us for two weeks (well, we know for sure that it was not in vain)...

I hoped that maybe they wouldn’t criticize me too much, maybe even praise me, but to be suspected of being an artist in disguise, pretending to be a teapot - I never even dreamed of that!
Mila, thank you for the wonderful course, it simply reveals something in us that we ourselves did not suspect.

Tamara Sh:

The two-week pencil drawing course is over! Thank you, Mila, very much!

I learned so many new things, learned so many new things! I really can't believe it! A little sad! I will now master the technique watercolor painting. ...

Sweet! I bow my head before your teaching talent and am captivated by your dedication and desire to pass on all your knowledge to everyone.

Thank you again.

I became bolder and drew the first portrait of my husband for the competition - I never would have thought that I could do anything at all!
Dear Mila, thank you very much for the course!!! Thank you for your help and guidance in making my first childhood dream come true - to draw beautifully! Therefore, I am now in the period of my second childhood - yay! I probably understood what and how, “enlightenment has come in the mind”! Now the skill needs practice. And for this - time, neck and eyes! AND good tools, and then I seem to understand that I need to fix it, I wipe it, and the paper shrinks, and it doesn’t look the same at all.

Mila, I wish you good luck in all your endeavors, interesting finds and pleasant acquisitions, joy and health!!!

"Learning to draw with a pencil"

The book contains all the lessons of the basic course + shading options.

Each of us made our first sketches as children. During the drawing lessons, not everyone tried to do the work well and did not think about acquiring skills. In adulthood, many people feel the need to create something beautiful, but how to learn to draw with a pencil? After all, any drawing technique is based on the ability to hold the stylus correctly, make basic sketches, and create images. In this article you will find useful tips for learning to draw, as in art school, and independently.

Pencil Drawing Basics

Experts say that anyone, regardless of age, can learn how to draw correctly with a pencil. Learning to paint always begins with getting to know the materials that a beginning artist needs:

  • a sheet of white paper, any format;
  • eraser, also known as a rubber grater;
  • simple pencils.

The first steps in drawing begin with a pencil sketch. Transmitted through meager lines general outline the object being copied, various poses, moments of movement. The sketch is the most quick way put on paper your first thoughts and impressions of what you are drawing. While sketching, you don’t need to pay attention to unnecessary details; it is recommended to draw it for no more than 10 minutes.

How to learn to draw from scratch

Scientific psychologists have proven that during the process of creating a drawing, both hemispheres of the brain are actively working in a person, and the imagination is activated. It’s not for nothing that there is a technique for calming nerves called art therapy - this is drawing for adults and children. Many people want to be able to, but do not know how to learn to draw with a pencil. Learning to draw from scratch is not at all difficult, because the technique of drawing with a pencil is accessible to children and adults.

Art school

How can a child learn to draw with a pencil? The best solution is to send him to an art school. It is designed for teaching children school age from 6 to 17 years old. Upon admission to this institution, the level of knowledge and skills in fine arts. Depending on the child’s skills, they are assigned to the appropriate group of students.

Education at the art school is free and government funded. I visit this place after main school lessons three times a week. The course of study ranges from two to seven years. After graduating from school, the graduate receives a diploma, which opens the door to an artistic future: admission to college or higher institution by specialty.

Courses

How can adults learn to draw with a pencil? You can learn the art of drawing through art courses. They are paid. The course of study ranges from several weeks to four years. During this time, the art studio will teach you the following skills:

  • textbooks and drawing aids;
  • tutorials;
  • drawing instructions;
  • training videos.

Step-by-step drawing technique

A beginner needs to practice drawing by creating sketches. In order for the drawing to be meaningful, the sketch must be created according to the rules that form the plan:

  1. First, choose an object that you will draw, for example, a teapot or vase.
  2. Examine it from all sides, determine its shape, its texture, how the shadows fall on this object.
  3. Determine the composition of the drawing, i.e. how it will be placed on paper, in what format.
  4. After the contours are drawn, draw the details and apply shadows.

Human

In order to draw a person, you need to decide on the composition. This means that you need to analyze the boundaries of the location from head to toe. Once you have a figure in your mind, start composing the body parts. You need to draw a person from a sketch of the contours of the head, going lower. In the image of a person, it is very important to immediately find the image; you should determine the number of details necessary for the finished drawing.

Face

When drawing a person, much attention is paid to the face. To draw it correctly, you need to follow the steps:

  1. Decide how the face will be positioned on the paper. To do this, mentally draw an axis of symmetry; it should pass through the center of the sheet.
  2. Draw with a pencil on paper the outline of the face in the form of an oval (shape chicken egg).
  3. Build the shape of the face, starting from the jawline, moving to the most convex part - the cheekbone area, then to the narrowest - the temporal area.
  4. Align the drawn lines with an eraser; this will noticeably “lighten” the outline of the oval.
  5. Divide the resulting oval into three equal parts using light, barely noticeable lines. The very first line, located closer to the chin, marks the tip of the nose.
  6. Draw the nose, starting from the tip. It always protrudes forward, so it has a round, square, or pointed shape. Then we draw the wings of the nose and the bridge of the nose.
  7. We draw the mouth, starting from the upper bend of the lip, which is located in the middle of the nostrils of the nose.

Eyes

In a portrait of a person, the eyes occupy the most important place; they attract attention, so they need to be given special attention. To draw them using a step-by-step technique, you must adhere to the following plan:

  1. Before drawing the eyes, it is necessary to outline the eyebrows, which are located at the level of the bridge of the nose. Their shape depends on the character that the artist wants to convey in the portrait.
  2. Having outlined the approximate location of the eyes, we draw out their shape in the form of an oval.
  3. Draw the pupil in the shape of a circle.
  4. We line the eyelids and shape the eyelashes.

Anime and Manga

Many young artists begin learning to draw with anime and manga, because... portray people in style bright characters Japanese cartoons much simpler than the classic one. The greatest emphasis in such cartoon characters falls on the head, eyes and hair. Let's sort it out step-by-step scheme drawing, with the help of which a novice artist will learn how to learn to draw anime:

  1. We start drawing the anime with an oval, which will be the head.
  2. Divide the circle in half lengthwise using straight line.
  3. Divide the head crosswise into three parts using light lines.
  4. Next, you need to note the location of the eyes, nose and mouth.
  5. Draw the big eyes, starting from the arc upper eyelid. The distance between them should be equal to one eye. Much attention When drawing pupils, attention is paid to applying highlights. Eyebrows are drawn on these characters classic style: two even arcs.
  6. The nose in anime and manga is drawn small, expressed with a tick.
  7. Lips are drawn with two small lines.
  8. Anime and manga hair should be drawn in flowing triangles that slightly cover the eyes.
  9. Anime girls are depicted in bright clothes, mostly dresses.

3D drawings

Volumetric drawings fascinate with their realism, thanks to the correct construction of the form, the application of shadows and highlights in in the right places. You should learn to draw such pictures from simple geometric shapes: cylinder, rhombus, square. To recreate the 3D illusion of an object, you need to draw it in isometry, when the angles between the coordinate axes are 45 degrees. The volume of the drawing is added by auxiliary lines, which are drawn inside the figure with light pressure, and the outline is drawn in a bold, darker color.

Portraits

Portraits can be drawn both from life and from photographs. Before drawing up an image, carefully consider what message the future drawing will convey. Learn to draw a portrait of a person correctly, not only in terms of proportionality and symmetry, but also to display real emotions. Another task of drawing an image of a person is to convey the maximum similarity of the person being copied. To achieve this, before you start drawing, consider all the details, highlight those features, “highlights” that you will focus on.

Graffiti on paper

Nowadays, graffiti painting is a fashionable movement that is gaining momentum. Many buildings are full of incomprehensible volumetric inscriptions, but you can often find beautiful, professional drawings on the walls. To ensure that your paintings do not disfigure city buildings, and that expensive paints do not go to waste, you need to practice on paper for a long time. First, try drawing the letters of the alphabet using a pencil. To give them volume, use auxiliary lines.
