Alexander Georgievich Vasiliev(July 15, 1969, Leningrad) - Russian musician, poet, composer, author and performer of songs, leader of the group “Splin”.

Biography

"On September 28 at 17.30, on the eve of the new concert season, the SPB.AIF.RU press center was visited by the leader of the Russian rock group "Splin" Alexander Vasiliev, who...

Great-grandfather Yakov was born in the village of Beklemishevo, Chita region (now Transbaikal region), Yakov's son - Alexander's grandfather, Vladimir, was also born in this village, was dispossessed and shot in 1938 in the Chernovskie Kopei region (Chita region). In Beklemishevo, my great-grandfather built a house in which, according to rumors, given time placed kindergarten. Rehabilitated in 1958. Alexander’s father was born in Chernovskie Kopi (where the family moved during dispossession) in 2012.

He spent the first five years of his childhood in the city of Freetown (Sierra Leone), where his father (an engineer by profession) worked on the construction of a port, and his mother taught Russian language and literature at a school at the Soviet embassy.

In 1974, all Soviet citizens were evacuated from the country back to the USSR. The Vasiliev family moved to the Lithuanian city of Zarasai, and in 1976 returned to Leningrad.

Since childhood, Sasha has been interested in music, and the desire to write arises in him. In 1980, my sister gave Vasilyev a reel with “Time Machine” on one side and the “Resurrection” group on the other. At the age of 12, he attends the first concert in his life - Time Machine, which impresses him very much - he decides to devote himself completely to rock music. In the seventh grade, an excellent student, Vasiliev, abandoned his studies, as a guitar 2012 came into his life.

In 1986, Alexander entered the Leningrad Institute of Aviation Instrumentation, where he met his future wife Alexandra and Alexander Morozov (Morris). The Mitra group appeared, in which Oleg Kuvaev (future creator of Masyanya) participated, among others. In 1988, the group tries to join the Leningrad rock club, but does not pass the selection process (the group is not allowed in by anyone, but Anatoly Gunitsky from the Aquarium group).

Alexander goes into the army for two years, where he writes songs that will later be included in the album Dusty Story. In 1990, Alexander returned from the army and Oleg Kuvaev hired him as an assembler at the Comedy Theater 2012.

In 1992, Alexander entered the Faculty of Economics Theater Institute. Soon he gets a job at the Buff theater, where Alexander Morozov worked as a sound engineer. Morozov (Morris) introduces Vasiliev to Nikolai Rostovsky, and they begin work on the first album. In May 1994, the album was ready.

On May 27, on the day of the 291st anniversary of St. Petersburg, a party was held dedicated to the completion of the recording of the first album, at which the musicians met Stas Berezovsky. This day is the official birthday of the group “Splin” 2012.

The first one was published in 2004 solo album Alexandra "Drafts".

On September 12, 2006, something happened in the Vasiliev family significant event- son Leonid was born. The song “Son” from the album “Split Personality” is dedicated to this.

Alexander Vasiliev is the leader, vocalist and ideological inspirer of the famous Russian group"Spleen". This project brought our today's hero enormous success, and at the same time great love from listeners.

At the moment, Alexander Vasiliev is one of the most successful Russian musicians in his field. musical style. But what else is worth telling about this? famous artist? Today we will try to find the answer to this question together.

Early years, childhood and family of Alexander Vasiliev

Alexander Vasiliev was born on July 15, 1969 in the city of Leningrad (St. Petersburg). However, in the city above the Neva, our today's hero lived very briefly at first. Almost immediately after the birth of their son, the family of the future musician moved to Sierra Leone, where Alexander’s father, together with other Soviet builders and engineers, was engaged in the construction of a seaport. During the same period, Alexander Vasilyev’s mother taught Russian at one of the local schools.

After work in Sierra Leone was completed, the family of the future musician moved to the Lithuanian town of Zarasai for several years. Thus, our today’s hero returned to his native Leningrad only at the age of seven. IN school years Surprisingly, Alexander was a diligent student who was often set as an example to his peers. For the first seven years, he always studied “excellently”, however, starting from the eighth grade, suddenly, unexpectedly for everyone, he stopped paying due attention to his studies and began to get seriously interested in music. During this period, Alexander Vasiliev began to methodically master the guitar. He played for friends and acquaintances, composed his first songs, and also dreamed of a serious career on stage.

However, after graduating from school, our today’s hero still chose a slightly different specialty for himself. First, the artist studied for a couple of years at the Leningrad Institute of Aviation Instrumentation. During this period, Alexander, together with several like-minded people, performed in music group"Mitra", which, however, disintegrated quite soon due to the fact that Vasiliev was drafted into the army.

Spleen - There is no way out (Invasion 2012) Alexander Vaasiliev

After returning home, the musician again entered college, but this time he decided to choose an economic specialty. By the way, the musician also did not graduate from this university. For some time he worked as an assembler at the Comedy Theater. And subsequently he took up music again. Having gathered several old friends around him, Alexander Vasiliev began recording the album “Dusty True Story”, the presentation of which took place in May 1994. This moment is considered the official date of formation of the Splin group.

Star Trek by Alexander Vasiliev, group "Splin"

The band's first album brought the group its first success. The creativity of the Splin group was highly appreciated by such famous Russian musicians like Boris Grebenshchikov and Konstantin Kinchev. The latter even invited the young St. Petersburg band to perform at his concerts as an “opening act.”

Subsequently, the group signed several lucrative contracts and began working on new records. In 1996, the group’s second album, “Weapon Collector,” appeared on the shelves of the CIS countries, and a year later, the third disc, “Lantern Under the Eye,” was presented to the public. These works were warmly received by the public, but the group “Splin” brought real fame to their fourth album, called “Pomegranate Album.” Largely thanks to her, in the late nineties, the musical group led by Alexander Vasiliev turned into one of the most popular Russian rock groups.

Spleen Romance. Alexander Vasiliev

Subsequently, “Splin” did not give up its position and remained an important unit on the Russian music scene. Over the many years of its existence, the group has released a total of eleven albums, the last of which was presented to the public in 2012. The group often went on tour, filmed videos and recorded soundtracks for famous Russian blockbusters.

In particular, the songs of Alexander Vasiliev can be heard in such famous films like “Brother-2”, “Alive”, “War”, “Swing”, “Day Watch”, “The Irony of Love”, as well as in some other cinematic films. These films starred Sergei Bodrov, Konstantin Khabensky, Vladimir Menshov and others. In addition, the songs of the group "Splin" are heard in the animated series "Masyanya", as well as in the Russian-language version of the popular Grand games Theft Auto IV.

Alexander Vasiliev outside the group "Splin"

As for Alexander Vasiliev himself, in this regard it is worth noting that in addition to musical creativity The artist has been interested in painting for a long time. In November 2008, the first personal exhibition of the artist’s works took place in Moscow at the Vrublevskaya Gallery.

Among the notable “solo” works of the musician is also his album “Drafts”, recorded separately from the group “Splin” and released in 2004. This record received quite flattering reviews from listeners and critics, but still did not gain much popularity.

Alexander Vasiliev today

IN last years our today's hero continues to work with the Splin group on new compositions and albums. The group tours a lot in Russia and other CIS countries. At the time of writing this article, the last striking work in the personal history of the St. Petersburg group was the single “Frost on the Skin,” released in 2013.

Currently, the Splin group is considered the most popular group working in the Russian rock style, according to the authoritative Russian Internet portal Last.fm.

Personal life of Alexander Vasiliev

On the eve of the release of Splina's new album, Signal from Space, team leader Alexander Vasiliev talks about new job, son, other people's concerts, film plans and absurdist festivals.

About the new album “Signal from Space” you say that in it “the split personality came back together.” What is causing these changes in mood? With the fact that “Split Personality” performed a therapeutic function and the sources of depression were eliminated?

One day I heard a story from a certain person. He walked through the forest and ate a quarter of a fly agaric. As he said, “then I walked through the forest together.” I asked what he and his “companion” experienced? The man replied: “Yes, everything was fine, we walked, talked, discussed some things, enjoyed the good weather and the forest.” I asked - what then? He said: “We connected back and I went home alone.” Actually, that’s where I took the name for my previous album, because behind this whole story an absolutely joyful background was discovered. For some reason, people look for a psychiatric illness in split personality. And I think that this whole story is cooler than a fairy tale, than Lewis Carroll, because even he didn’t think of this.

“Signal from Space” had 18 songs, “Split Personality” had 17... You set a goal to definitely include in the album everything new that was written on this moment?

No, I arrange the material that is written into an album, that’s all. In principle, this is acceptable with any material. Especially if the song is well recorded, sounds at the right tempo, the appropriate tonality is chosen and the mood is maintained. As a result, you can make albums from this, and a variety of them. For example, I already know from experience that a lot depends on the first song - that’s how people’s perceptions work. And this time we put such a tough guy in first place! Lovers of light songs will simply run away in panic.

Some songs being prepared for the “Signal from Space” album were included in the Internet bootleg in some completely obscene quality.

Well, people are having fun - well done! This is reminiscent of how children write down the lyrics of their favorite songs in a notebook. It’s just that now it has already entered the virtual space to the level of album compilation. Our children have fun this way, and there is no need to disturb them.

And, for example, Konstantin Kinchev once warned: under no circumstances should you post new songs recorded from concerts on a tape recorder, this will harm your perception when you hear them on the album.

Konstantin Kinchev makes great music. This is characteristic of him; he cannot live without it. This is his style, his life. And I can do without it.

- Does your three-year-old son listen to your works?

No, we don’t introduce him to the work of “Spleen” at all on purpose, but, naturally, he listens to all the rehearsals in the kitchen, remembers the songs that have not yet been completed.

-Have you tried to drag him to any concerts?

The only time he was at our sound check. And then, naturally, it was loud for him, so he didn’t stay there long. But I also pulled him onto the stage to the microphone, because it’s fun for the kids to talk. And how we started playing - Sashka (wife - Note ed.) He was immediately taken away.

- Do you go to other people’s concerts yourself?

Yes, mostly at festivals (laughs). While you're waiting in line, you'll listen to so many bands that there's enough for ten concerts ahead! And so, you know, we’re so, by and large, greedy that when Nick Cave comes to St. Petersburg and the organizers call us with an invitation, you start saying that you’ve already been there twice. I'd rather stay at home with my family.

- Why did you part with your management?

And we happily met again! Here, who the hell are you going to break up with? Fate brought us together again.

- So everything is back to normal?

Yet it always returns in a new quality. In a spiral. I want to say that everything is developing so much at its own pace that if I interfere in the course of events, it is very little. And they didn’t care about me with their interventions! (laughs).

- For the upcoming tribute to “The Time Machine” you performed the song “It Was So Long Ago.”

Yes, it turned out great, crazy song! Actually, this is one of the best songs“Machines” has a very unusual structure, three-part. True, the third part repeats the first, but it doesn’t matter. Naturally, we simplified it as much as possible, because we understood that there would be other groups at the tribute besides us, and to go there with a six-minute piece would be arrogance. We cut it down to four minutes. In general, we did it as dynamically as possible.

-Have you changed it a lot in terms of mood and presentation?

No. The arrangement - yes, they changed it. And the most important thing is that the loud second part of “Machine” began gradually, with some minor strumming - and suddenly it grows into a passage where everyone is acting like crazy! And we started playing right away, without any interludes, so as not to waste the time of other groups on this album.

You took part in the Kalmyk charity festival “Ocean of Compassion” with a Buddhist background...

You see, as soon as you blurt out somewhere in an interview that you are interested in Eastern religions and occult sciences, they immediately take you to the President of Kalmykia, put you in a 600 Mercedes - and you find yourself in such a wild mix of Buddhism with “ United Russia"that Saltykov-Shchedrin and Gogol would simply drink the juice from all this! Unreal geographical, political, social, religious absurdism. This is a cocktail that has literally everything, and we're on top, Mama Mia! But this interesting times, because indeed such distortions of space play the role of a distorting mirror. I have an artist friend (I won’t mention his last name) who likes to penetrate into various areas that are alien to him, because he feels spaceship. For example, he can make friends with a team of loaders in a supermarket, or he can go to the funeral of a thief in law. At the same time, he looks like he belongs everywhere - so that no one will even suspect him. For me, the festival in Kalmykia turned out to be about the same.

You played at a St. Petersburg concert to benefit the homeless. How did you get there, and did this action bring any specific results?

It brought great fruits - and thank God! They bought some buses there. All this came from Grebenshchikov, but you can’t refuse him. We all actually had to go to the shelter for this purpose. There I witnessed another absurdist act, during which Grebenshchikov communicated on bunks with homeless people sitting on the same bunks in underwear. And BG with a beard, in a vest, with rings, earrings, amulets, traveling from India to China and back. I just took the phone, stepped aside and filmed this scene. No one has such a clip anywhere. Moreover, this is not a production - no budget, no money, no film crew is needed.

-Are you not going to give this video a go?

I think Grebenshchikov will not mind. He obviously went there for the same reason. (laughs).

- Your songs were performed in the play “Leningradka”, dedicated to the siege of Leningrad. How did they get there?

I am very grateful to the directors for this. Quiet, modest people called me and explained what they had children's theater on the Fontanka, where they are staging a play about besieged Leningrad, and they want to put my song “Petal” in the final. The performance is very complex, and at the same time it won the “ Golden mask" Unfortunately, I never saw the performance. It so happened that when it was on, I was away all the time. But I like it so much that I haven’t seen it... Thanks to this, the performance is simply super ideal for me.

- They didn’t explain why the choice fell on the song “Petal”?

Probably because of the line “Nobody wants war.” Yes, and the song was written based on children's work Valentina Kataeva. For children - this is it.

- At one time, I was quite impressed by your participation in the film “Alive”.

And I want to quickly forget about it...

- Why?

I can't say anything because I haven't seen the whole film. But just the fact that this is a trailer on Channel One... Is it a good film?

I like it. I especially liked the episode with your participation, where the border between worlds collapses and your hero sees a ghost during a concert.

Well, yes, that’s why I agreed to participate. I was captivated by the fact that they offer me to play not Superman, a businessman or a bandit, but a musician who sees souls of the dead. However, after the release of this film there was such a fuss that I immediately tried to distance myself from it all. But if it worked, I'm happy and glad.

- Were you involved in any other adventures?

It’s not that cinema didn’t work out for me, it’s just that I don’t have to go there on purpose. I have no goal to make a career as an actor. I really want to make a film myself.

- Is your desire to make a film at the dream level or do you already have some specific plans?

There are plans. We even once sat in this very restaurant with cool Russian filmmakers and discussed joint plans. I think it’s more than possible to make a film. I am sure that they will give me money even if I don’t show the script.

- However, do you already have a draft of the script?

I just really love Monty Python. The only thing I want to do is comedies. I don’t want to make problematic films, I have a different mindset. Even if some troubles happen in my life, I still try to look at the situation with humor. But try to outdo Monty Python! But I don’t want to shoot anything lower. It's the same as surpassing Pushkin or Shakespeare in poetry. That’s why I’m somehow going around in circles: yes, they are geniuses, but I have my own niche. I know that in Russian rock music I can really make such a noise that everyone will sit down. I have confidence in this. But about cinema, I have no such confidence.

- Alexander Pushnoy wrote a song parodying you and the group “Korni”. How do you feel about such attacks?

When this person had just appeared, they gave me a link, I listened, and I didn’t like it. And then, when they told me that he had done something about me, I was skeptical about it. If he did something really funny and witty, I would cover it myself at concerts.

You took part quite clearly in the song of the group “Alice” “Rock’n’roll”. How was it and how do you generally feel about Konstantin Kinchev and “Alice”?

I really love “Alice” for the album “Energy”. There is constantly some kind of magic happening in the text and music, off-screen voices throw out some little phrases - and immediately it gives way to songs. The album flies by in one breath. Probably “Energy” is in the top three best albums Russian rock. I can’t say anything similar about Alice’s further albums. The group was cut off. In “Energy” Kinchev had a sense of humor, self-irony, artistry, and clowning, and then things started getting serious. I listen to this seriousness - and I get scared. I cannot condemn this in any way. It's just not my thing - that's all. Although then Kinchev had a period of genius after the death of Bashlachev, when it shocked him very much. At some stage, Kinchev tried to continue this Bashlachev line. Suddenly he began to write “a la Russe”, to Bashlachev, he began to write some kind of folk music. But, we must give Kinchev his due, this was not secondary folk, he found something of his own. He had some ballads with 600 verses, the strongest lyrics. And then bam - and it cut off again. But for those two periods, Kostya was simply respected. As for the song “Rock’n’roll,” Kinchev showed me the lyrics and offered to sing some lines. I answered him that I will never sing these lines in my life. (laughs). But he knows me, and I know him, so he asked me: “Which ones do you want?” I showed them, and Kinchev told me that he had already given them to someone. Then I replied: “Let him sing them to you!” In general, I sang to him the ones I chose myself, he called me back and said that he was keeping my version.

- Kinchev recently produced a tribute to Ricochet, “Enter the Dragon.” You didn't participate there...

At this point I refused. Although Ricochet has a blessed memory... He is a complete bastard, I adore him (laughs). And what Kostya sent me as a tribute to Ricochet is not mine. Once upon a time they recorded the song “My City” together. Super thing! No pathos, nothing! And then he sent me something like that, “boom-boom-boom,” what should I do there? It's not mine.

- What exactly was this song?

Now I can't even remember. Can you imagine? Usually I remember some phrases, but here it went unnoticed.

- What are your memories of Ricochet?

He was such a confident dude! “This is good, this is bad, this is pop, this is rock.” Such a specific guy. Well, in principle, Kostyan is the same dude. He was shaped by a certain Moscow environment. And I have a habit of laughing at everything.

- But you talked with Ricochet?

We have never communicated in our lives! I saw him only once and came at him: “Why, you such a bastard, did you mix Spleen’s “Love Walks on a Wire” so badly?” He: “No, not bad, I mixed it well.” And I continue: “There’s no voice, you can’t hear the guitars, what were you doing?” Ricochet responded: “But we put your song first in our collection.” New wave St. Petersburg rock" was staged!" May the kingdom of heaven rest with him!

Dejection, laziness, lack of faith in one's own strength - these misfortunes are inherent in musicians no less than in other people. It’s just that they are more noticeable among rock stars: rarely anyone today regularly records albums or at least singles... There are few pleasant exceptions: Svetlana Surganova and the Orchestra, “Picnic”, “Bi-2”, “KnyaZz”, “Melnitsa”, “ChaiF”, maybe two or three more musical group. Chizh, for example, has not been pleased with premieres since 2001, “Sunday” - since 2005... But creative insight is a fragile phenomenon, it comes when something excites the artist, inspires and leaves him indifferent.

Alexander Vasiliev: if songs appear, they must be recorded immediately while they are “hot”! Photo: RIA Novosti

"Spleen" is the rare rock band that releases an album every year or two. So at “Invasion” the St. Petersburgers played songs from the new disc “Oncoming Lane”. Wise, meditative, sometimes explosive, with an intense plot, melody and drive. “Shaman”, “When 100 years have passed”, others…

“We’ve been playing hits here for several years, and now we’ve decided to perform songs that I consider little-known. Because they’re from our new album,” Alexander Vasiliev said backstage at the festival.

And then he answered other questions.

At the festival, did you play songs from “Oncoming Lane” for the first time, and at the same time you were preparing for the upcoming tour?

Alexander Vasiliev: Yes, we haven't performed these songs in public yet. But soon the program will expand, and on tour we will present “Oncoming Lane” wider, bigger and better. In September we will play these new songs in Helsinki.

You started recording the disc when radio stations were still broadcasting hits from the previous one - “The Key to the Cipher”. This record sold well, and your fans were still getting used to the new songs, trying to feel them more deeply... Maybe you should have waited with “Oncoming Lane,” at least for commercial purposes?

Alexander Vasiliev: It’s completely normal for us when, having finished one album, we immediately begin writing the next one, albeit in parts. I don't understand why wait? If songs appear, they must be recorded immediately while they are “hot”! And not to gain something and calculate... Now “Oncoming Lane” has been released, and in September we have a new studio session planned.

Few people record albums regularly these days. "Spleen" is a rare band that releases albums every year or two

Let's return to "Invasion". Since this year, a third stage has appeared here - “Vysotsky”. In addition to concerts and lectures, it also hosted competitions for new performers: bards, rock bands, rappers, even actors and poets... How do you yourself feel about competitions, which are increasing in number every year?

Alexander Vasiliev: I am close to Vysotsky’s work, and once we sang his song “On mass graves"But after that they closed the topic - they didn’t perform anything from Vladimir Semenovich’s work. Competitions? For God’s sake, let them be! The main thing is that everyone is happy.

Three bands out of 150 refused to play at the festival because of the exhibition being held by the Ministry of Defense at Nashestvo. What do you think of it? (The exhibition was organized, by the way, very far from the stages - on the edge of the festival field, almost in the forest... Therefore, some spectators did not even know about it, while others specially came to see modern technology, take part in master classes, undergo training for survival in the forest, gain knowledge and even experience in physical training. - approx. "RG")

Alexander Vasiliev: Tanks are everywhere on the ground. And we should be glad that they are at the exhibition, and not burning somewhere on the battlefield...

Tell us about yours main love in life?

Alexander Vasiliev: This...(after a pause) is the love of life.

Previously, Splin's songs were full of melancholy, sometimes even depressiveness. Nowadays the music is different. Tell us how you get out of depression if you have it?

Alexander Vasiliev: Now there is simply no time for this. Life is so busy, and there are so many events, meetings, concerts in it that there is no time for depression. What about our creativity? There is such a definition: philosophical lyrics. I didn’t come up with this (smiles). I read it on the Internet.

Came out new album, at “Invasion” you are sold out again, there is a big tour ahead. What will happen next?
