Cooking oatmeal in a slow cooker and microwave

Of course, preparing any dish takes some time. And even for simple oatmeal you will need about 20 minutes, and in the morning, unfortunately, not every one of us can afford this. Therefore our irreplaceable assistants become representatives of the kitchen household appliances. For example, a multicooker is a very convenient device that will almost independently prepare several dishes for you at once.

To prepare oatmeal in a slow cooker, take the following products:

  • 1 cup oatmeal;
  • 3 glasses of milk;
  • 30 grams of butter;
  • 1 tablespoon sugar;
  • salt to taste.

To supplement, you can take berries, fruits, jam, honey, marmalade, candied fruits and other things that your imagination tells you.

Take the multicooker bowl and grease it in a circle with butter so that the milk does not escape. Place another piece of butter on the bottom. Pour in oatmeal and pour in milk diluted with water in a 1:1 ratio. You can also add cream, the oatmeal will be even tastier and richer.

Close the multicooker lid, select the “Porridge” mode. Usually it is designed for 40 minutes, but in this case, most likely, it means porridge made from cereals, which take much longer to cook. For oatmeal, 10 minutes will be enough. I encourage you to experiment to find the right time for your device model. After the cooking time has passed, leave the porridge for another 5 minutes to allow it to heat up.

Cook at the ratio:

  • for 1 cup of cereal

  • salt to taste
  • butter - 30-40 g

I soak the cereal in the evening. I drain the water from the cereal and pour fresh water, for 1 glass of cereal - 3 glasses of water. I put it on the fire, bring it to a boil, reduce the heat to low, add some salt and cook for 30 minutes, until there is no water left in the pan. At the end of cooking, add a piece of butter and close the lid tightly. Let it brew. I do not add sugar or honey to non-dairy oatmeal, but use your own discretion.

Useful properties of oats

Here are 9 scientifically proven healing properties of oats.

1. Oats are incredibly nutritious

The nutritional composition of oats is well balanced. This grain is a good source of carbohydrates and fiber, including powerful beta-glucan. They also contain more protein and fat than most grains. Oats are rich in important vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

Oatmeal

100 grams of dry oats contain:

  • Manganese: 244% of RDI
  • Phosphorus: 52% of RDI
  • Magnesium: 43% of RDI
  • Copper: 31% of RDI
  • Iron: 25% of RDI
  • Zinc: 25% of RDI

  • Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid): 13% of the RDI
  • Smaller amounts of calcium, potassium, vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) and vitamin B3 (niacin)

This amount of oats contains 66 grams of carbohydrates, 16 grams of protein, 7 grams of fat and 10 grams of fiber, and only 389 calories.

This means that oats are one of the most nutritious foods you can eat.

Summary:

Oats are rich in carbohydrates and fiber, but also contain more protein and fat than most other grains. It is very rich in many vitamins and minerals.

2. Whole oats are rich in antioxidants, including aventramides

What are the benefits of oats? Whole oats contain significant amounts of antioxidants and beneficial plant compounds called polyphenols. Most notable is a unique group of antioxidants called aventramides, which are found almost exclusively in oats.

Aventramides may help lower blood pressure levels by increasing nitric oxide production. Nitric oxide gas molecules help dilate blood vessels, resulting in better blood circulation. In addition, aventramides have anti-inflammatory and antipruritic effects.

Oats also contain ferulic acid in large quantities, which is also an antioxidant.

Summary:

Oats contain many powerful antioxidants, including aventramides. These compounds can help lower blood pressure, improve circulation, and prevent inflammation and itching.

3. Oats contain soluble fiber beta-glucan

Oats contain high amounts of beta-glucan, which is a type of soluble fiber. Beta-glucan is partially soluble in water and forms a thick gel-like solution in the intestines.

Here are the health benefits of beta-glucan dietary fiber:

  • reduce LDL and total cholesterol levels
  • reduce blood sugar and insulin response
  • increase the feeling of fullness in the stomach
  • increase the growth of beneficial bacteria in the digestive tract

Summary:

Oats are rich in beta-glucan, a type of soluble fiber that is very beneficial for human health. It helps lower cholesterol and blood sugar levels, helps normalize intestinal microflora and increases the feeling of fullness in the stomach.

4. Oats Lower Cholesterol and Protect LDL Cholesterol from Oxidation

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide. One of the main risk factors for developing heart and blood vessel diseases is high blood cholesterol levels.

Many studies have shown that the beta-glucan in oats is effective in lowering both total cholesterol and “bad” LDL cholesterol. Beta-glucan can increase the secretion of cholesterol-rich bile, thereby lowering blood cholesterol levels.

Oxidation of LDL cholesterol, which occurs when it reacts with free radicals, is another important step in the development of heart disease. This causes inflammation in the arteries, damages tissue, and can increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

One study reports that the antioxidants in oats work together with vitamin C to prevent LDL oxidation.

Summary:

Oats may reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering both total cholesterol and bad LDL cholesterol, and protect LDL cholesterol from oxidation.

Oatmeal cookies are also very beneficial for the human body.

5. Oats may improve blood sugar control

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a common disease characterized by significantly elevated blood sugar levels. This is usually a consequence of decreased sensitivity to the hormone insulin.

Oats may help lower blood sugar, especially in people who are overweight or have type 2 diabetes. It may also improve insulin sensitivity. These effects are mainly attributed to beta-glucan's ability to form a thick gel, which delays gastric emptying and the absorption of glucose into the blood.

Summary:

Thanks to the soluble fiber beta-glucan, oats may improve insulin sensitivity and lower blood sugar levels.

6. Oats for weight loss

Oatmeal is not just a tasty breakfast - it also fills the stomach very well. This may help you eat fewer calories and lose weight. By delaying the time it takes for your stomach to empty, the beta-glucan in oatmeal can increase your feeling of fullness.

Beta-glucan may also promote the release of peptide YY (PYY), a hormone produced in the intestines, in response to food intake. This satiety hormone has been shown to reduce calorie intake and may reduce the risk of obesity.

Summary:

Oatmeal can help you lose weight by making you feel fuller. It does this by slowing stomach emptying and increasing production of the satiety hormone YY.

7. Milled oats help in skin care

It's no coincidence that oats can be found in numerous skin care products. Manufacturers of these products often label finely ground oats as “colloidal oatmeal.”

The FDA approved colloidal oatmeal as a skin protectant back in 2003. But in fact, oats have a long history of use as a remedy for itching and irritation for various skin conditions. For example, oat-based products can relieve the symptoms of eczema.

Please note that the benefits of oats for the skin are associated only with applying it to the skin, and not with its consumption.

Summary:

Colloidal oatmeal (finely ground oats) has long been used to treat dry and itchy skin. This remedy can help relieve symptoms of various skin conditions, including eczema.

8. Oats reduce the risk of asthma in children

Asthma is the most common chronic disease in children. This is an inflammatory disease of the airways - the tubes through which air enters and exits a person's lungs.

Although not all children have the same symptoms, many experience recurrent coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath.

Many researchers believe that early introduction of solid foods into the diet may increase a child's risk of developing asthma and other allergic diseases. However, research shows that this does not apply to everyone food products. Early introduction of oats into the diet, for example, may have a truly protective effect.

One study reported that feeding oats to infants under 6 months of age was associated with a reduced risk of childhood asthma.

Summary:

Some studies suggest that oats may help prevent asthma in children when fed to infants.

9. Oats help relieve constipation

Older people often experience constipation, in the form of infrequent, irregular, difficult bowel movements. Laxatives are often used to relieve constipation in older adults. However, although they are effective, they are also associated with weight loss and decreased quality of life.

Research shows that oat bran (the fiber-rich outer layer of the grain) may help relieve constipation in older adults.

One study found that 30 elderly patients who consumed oat bran soup or dessert daily for 12 weeks experienced improved overall health and relief from constipation symptoms.

Moreover, 59% of these patients were able to stop using laxatives after the 3-month study, while overall laxative use increased by 8% in the control group.

Summary:

Research shows that oat bran may help relieve constipation in older adults, significantly reducing the need to use laxatives.

Harm of oatmeal: who should not eat it

Oatmeal is beneficial to the body, but you should not make it the basis of your diet. When consuming the product in large quantities and for a long time, the absorption of vitamin D and calcium is impaired. It is caused by the accumulation of phytic acid. This leads to weakening of the skeletal system.

The main contraindication is gluten intolerance (celiac disease). But we should also not forget that instant oatmeal without cooking and flavored dishes from bags do not provide any benefit and can cause allergies, indigestion, and thereby cause harm to the body.

Oatmeal can be prepared either from whole grains or oatmeal, using water, milk or a mixture of both. You can add sugar or honey, dried fruits, and nuts to it. It can be prepared on the stove, in the oven, in the slow cooker, and even in the microwave.

From oatmeal you can make granola or, more commonly, muesli. It turns out much tastier than store bought! Whole grains take much longer to cook and are best soaked in advance. I'll tell you how I cook this porridge.

Cooking oatmeal porridge

If you are going to cook whole oatmeal, you should sort it out, rinse it very thoroughly in several waters and soak it in water.

Cook at the ratio:

  • for 1 cup of cereal
  • 3 glasses of water
  • salt to taste
  • butter - 30-40 g

I soak the cereal in the evening. I drain the water from the cereal and pour fresh water, for 1 glass of cereal - 3 glasses of water. I put it on the fire, bring it to a boil, reduce the heat to low, add some salt and cook for 30 minutes, until there is no water left in the pan. Watch the process carefully, otherwise your porridge will burn. Do not close the lid tightly, leave a crack, it can easily float away.

This porridge is very good to cook in the oven. To do this, after boiling, you need to put it in it - already heated.

At the end of cooking, add a piece of butter and close the lid tightly. Let it brew. I do not add sugar or honey to non-dairy oatmeal, but use your own discretion.

Making oatmeal porridge

If you need to cook rolled oats, pour water into a saucepan:

  • for 1 glass of rolled oats
  • 2 glasses of water
  • salt to taste
  • butter to taste

I bring the water to a boil, add some salt and add rolled oats. After boiling, reduce the heat to low and cook until done with the lid ajar. I determine readiness by the tooth. I stir the porridge periodically to prevent it from burning.

You can add less or more water. Its thickness will depend on this. And, as usual, it’s also to your taste. Don't forget to add butter, unless you don't mind it, of course.

But now, from this porridge, you can make milk, sweet, and in addition with fruits and nuts.
