Just five years ago, the name of Ksenia Dezhneva was known only in narrow musicological circles. And even then among fans of classical opera music.
Today she is known from numerous television broadcasts with Valery Meladze and Nikolai Baskov. - It’s immodest to talk about myself like that, but I’m probably stubborn. And responsible. Although insecure since childhood. And I also have a Volga character.
- So you are practically our countrywoman?
- She could have been. I myself was born in Moscow. I can also consider Zhukovsky, near Moscow, as my homeland, where my parents lived for a long time and met. But they always assured me that I inherited my character from my grandmother, my father’s mother. But she’s just from Saratov. That’s why I love all the Volga cities on a genetic level. I consider each of them family. After all, I could have been born here, after all. And I know firsthand how purposeful and strong-minded all Volga residents are.
- As far as can be judged from the few publications in the press about you so far, you are purposefully aimed at opera.
- Instead of answering, here are two facts from my biography that round out what I’ve lived so far. I started with the role of Suzanne in Mozart’s “The Marriage of Figaro” at the Moussa Jalil Opera and Ballet Theater. And this summer she made her debut as Barbarina in the same opera, but in Bolshoi Theater. I can’t imagine that I could change even for a moment the art that I’ve been pursuing all my life. - It all started when in 2012, while still a student, Alexander Serov invited me to perform backing vocals. It was new, and I took the plunge. And my acquaintance with the pop establishment began. A casual acquaintance, by the way. Although Kolya Baskov and I found several common topics of conversation. He is also an opera singer by training. I can only say that I sang duets only with interesting men. Uninteresting people don't interest me (smiles).
- Was there anything, besides music, that “plowed” you for the rest of your life?
- Good literature- and continues to “plow.” Especially Hemingway. And especially “For Whom the Bell Tolls.”
- Are the cities on tour not yet merging into one?
- No way. I am still a neophyte traveler. And I'm interested in learning everything. And first of all they are interested in the Volga cities for obvious reasons (smiles). Ulyanovsk is extraordinary. – I follow the rule: 99 percent labor and 1 percent talent. If luck accompanies someone in life, then nothing was ever easy for me. I had to work hard and improve. And not only in creativity.
I really didn't like myself when I was growing up. From the age of 14 to 17 I considered myself ugly duckling. I had a pronounced, protruding jaw, like Freddie Mercury. They straightened it for me, but I had to wear braces for two years. suffered overweight. But I signed up for sports and started swimming. And he lost a lot of weight and stretched out. And two years later, even my relatives didn’t recognize me. Now I am 191 cm tall, although my parents are quite short.
– This is my conscious choice since childhood. In my family, no one has a direct connection to music, but we have always loved high-quality pop music, such as Queen and Michael Jackson. I was about five or six years old when my parents bought a stereo system and a microphone. Not for me, but for yourself. But since then I haven’t parted with the microphone. I grew up on the Backstreet Boys, George Michael, Sade.

– I have many favorite compositions in different genres. Crazy about Rachmaninov's second concerto. For me, this is a work of art, a state in which I immerse myself.
I write songs myself. Sometimes it’s words, but more often it’s music. True, for now these compositions are in my personal listening. I am too critical of myself, and especially of my composer’s work. I didn’t dare introduce them to the project. Also because I perform here in the neoclassical style, and my songs are more pop.
– Konstantin Shataevich – well-mannered, modest, kindest person. It creates the most comfortable conditions for the performer. First he listens to the artist’s opinion, and then he speaks his own. This is very important. When it was not he, but I, who chose the song on the project, I heard from him: “Sing it the way you want, the way you hear it.”
– What interests me most is poetry. I recently discovered Arthur Rimbaud. His poems are spiritual. From modern writers I like Coelho. Often, reading a book is inspired by its film adaptation. After watching the films, I read “Eat, Pray, Love” and “Love Lives for Three Years.” Maybe these are not such deep books, but they are realistic and modern. And romantic.
- Mom Julia. She is not just a mother, but a friend. She raised me on trust, never scolded or punished me. Although parents often base their education on fear. And the children don’t tell them much. And I still have no secrets from my mother. We just have a cosmic connection with her. We treat each other with great respect.

– We have many cultures in our family. Mom is Russian. Dad is Armenian. There are also Persian roots. My real name Ishmukhamedov. I don't introduce myself as her because she's hard to remember. We became close later, when Volodya went to Minsk to study at the Academy of Arts as a sound engineer. Then I realized how terribly I miss him. And even if he doesn’t understand everything yet, he’s trying very hard. At least this does not interfere with his studies at the Faculty of Economics at the Ivanovo Agricultural Academy, where he has already become the main star of all creative competitions. Arsen’s friends advised him to audition for the project, and for good reason. “This is absolutely my artist,” Maxim Fadeev exclaimed as soon as he saw him.
