The Mariinsky Theater poster for December is new. History, description and detailed plan of the Mariinsky Theater. "classical guitar sounds"

Opera Madame Butterfly(Chio-Chio-San) G. Puccini
July 27, 2017
Main stage of the Mariinsky Theater

This performance is true artwork! Amazing Japanese aesthetics maintained in everything and in every detail.

The Czech team of artists and production director brilliantly coped with the task of realizing subtle, harmonious and minimalistic Japanese taste. Every scene is impeccably balanced artistic composition by the relationship between colors, shapes and meaning that they carry. If the play didn't have Puccini's grandiose music and talented vocal performance, the organization of space itself, the costumes of the characters, the movements of scenery objects on the stage, ideally calibrated in terms of the speed and time of their appearance, would alone be capable of charm and immerse in the subtle world of feng shui art. I would especially like to note the scenes of the arrival of the boats with the bride in the first act and a quietly gliding boat - there is no doubt that on the water (!)- at the conclusion of the second act.

Played the title role Victoria Yastrebova and she was absolutely incomparable! Great acting, accurately conveying gestures and movements fragile, young, silent, tender and loving Japanese girl . And the singer expresses the same thing in her voice, in a surprisingly reverent singing! Don't doubt her for a second sincerity. How many compassion, tenderness this heroine calls! And it’s absolutely stunning integrity, purity and fortitude.

From the impression that remains after the performance, we can say that this is not just a performance, but some kind of religious-mystical symbolic drama, mystery. Plunging into her, deeply you are imbued with subtle spiritual trepidation, the energy of a whole spirit, and you leave the theater with a feeling of fullness, renewal and cleansing.

In addition, the plot of the play (those who wish can read it on the Internet) interesting from historical, cultural and political point of view. So, main character American Pinkerton (in a wonderful performance Dmitry Voropaev) embodies the aggressive, predatory spirit of the Western world. One of his remarks is very eloquent: “After all, life would be insignificant if you didn’t pick flowers wherever possible.”. And fragile, meek, full of heartfelt tenderness, Madame Butterfly, embodies the natural, not yet “civilized” world, and, wanting to please the American, renounces her own faith, which leads to a break with her relatives and, as if between the lines, with herself , blocking all the ways back. But nevertheless, closeness to nature and primordial religion nurtured in her integrity and courageous spirit, which was expressed in the heroine’s last dying remark: "He who cannot live with honor must die with honor" .

This is a performance for which you want to learn Italian and buy tickets to the stalls again!

The theater is deservedly considered one of the oldest in Russia and thanks to high level training opera singers and choreographic troupes known throughout the world.

Guests of the Northern capital who want to join the world of art should find out in advance where the Mariinsky Theater is located in St. Petersburg. The main building is located on Theater Square, but lovers of opera and ballet can also visit branches of the Mariinsky Theater (as the theater is popularly called). At:

  • Second stage (Mariinsky-2): st. Dekabristov, 34;
  • Concert Hall (Mariinsky-3): st. Dekabristov, 37;
  • Primorskaya stage: Vladivostok, st. Fastovskaya, 20.

Although the current building was opened to the public in 1860 with the premiere of the famous opera A Life for the Tsar, the official date of birth of the Mariinsky Theater is considered to be the end of the 18th century. The grand opening took place in October 1783. Bolshoi Theater, built on the personal orders of Empress Catherine and designed by the famous Italian architect Rinaldi. Italian and French operas were often performed here, and vocal concerts and musical evenings.

In the 19th century, most performances were held on the stage of the Circus Theatre, built opposite the Bolshoi and almost completely destroyed by the fire of 1859. At the same time, work began on the construction of a new imperial theater, which became a real architectural decoration of the city. They were led by the talented Italian architect Alberto Cavosa.

Most visitors are interested in who the Mariinsky Theater is named after. The euphonious name was given to him in honor of the wife of the Russian monarch, Maria. The wife of the then ruler Alexander II was considered a real patroness fine arts. Therefore, the first performers of the Mariinsky Theater were the singers and choreographers of its personal troupe.

Theater interior

The Mariinsky building is interesting not only for its unusual semicircular shape, but also for its interior furnishings. When visiting the performance, you should pay attention to the following attractions:

Royal box. It is one of the largest and most pompous in the building. The box was once decorated with a monogram, which picturesquely combined the first letters of the names of Tsar Alexander II and his wife. IN Soviet times it was replaced by the hammer and sickle emblem, but in the 90s of the twentieth century the original decoration of the box was restored. Now you can purchase tickets for it on the official website of the Mariinsky Theater, located in the center of St. Petersburg. ordinary people, unless seats are reserved for diplomats and government members. The cost of tickets to the royal box is 4100-4400 RUB. In the wall of the box you can see a secret door behind the scenes, which leads directly to the actresses’ dressing rooms, to the “women’s part” of the theater. According to legend, this is how Russian tsars visited their beloved ballerinas incognito.

An orchestra pit with a rising and falling floor. For this purpose, hydraulic lifts are built into it. During the restoration of the building, a layer of fragments of broken crystal glassware was discovered under the floor covering. As it turns out, more than 200 years ago, architects used it to improve room acoustics.

Alexander Golovin Hall, built directly under the roof of the theater and bearing the name of the outstanding Russian painter late XIX- first half of the twentieth century. Nowadays, most of the sets for operas and ballets are created here. Many of them can easily be called masterpieces fine arts. The room still houses a chair in which the artist painted a portrait by his colleague Yakovlev. This painting can be seen in the foyer of the 3rd tier.

The room is famous for the fact that it was in it that Golovin painted his famous painting, in which the brilliant Chaliapin is depicted in the image of the usurper Godunov from the opera of the same name. Here the outstanding Russian poets Voloshin and Gumilyov quarreled, and it came to bloodshed and a duel.

Curtain. Its author is the same Golovin, who executed it surprisingly skillfully in the 1910s. The curtain is considered a symbol of the Mariinsky Theater and combines traditional fine art and appliques, exactly reproducing the design of the train from one of the ceremonial outfits of Empress Maria.

Three-tier chandelier, made of bronze and illuminating auditorium. Its weight is more than 2 tons. The lamp contains more than 200 light bulbs, giving extraordinary bright light thanks to more than 2000 crystal pendants. The latter decorate all tiers of the chandelier, and the lampshade is painted with images of merry nymphs and cupids, as well as portraits of famous Russian playwrights of past centuries.

Bell, “living” in the theater for more than 200 years. It is used in opera productions of Khovanshchina and Boris Godunov. According to legend, immediately after the revolution he was removed from one of the churches and thrown into the Neva. He was pulled out of there shortly before the start of the Great Patriotic War and donated it to the Mariinsky Theater.

  • "Carmen" IN new version The opera features the same famous opera parts, but its action is somewhat modernized and evokes more associations with our reality. The director’s special find is the use of large quantity stairs According to him, they symbolize the desire human soul to something sublime and divine.
  • "Salome". This is one of the most anticipated productions of the New Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre. Bible story Herod's beautiful stepdaughter, who demanded the prophet's head on a platter, turns into a struggle of global ideas on which human society is based: selfishness and altruism. Modern video graphics add to the spectacle of the opera.
  • "Jenufa." The story of a lonely pregnant girl who was abandoned by her lover is as old as the world, but the Mariinsky artists managed to give it a new sound. In the complex family ups and downs of this opera, many of the audience will recognize what happened to them or their friends.
