Andrei Malakhov was born on January 11, 1972 in the northern town of Apatity, where his father Nikolai Dmitrievich Malakhov, a geophysicist, was assigned. While studying, Andrei interned at the University of Michigan: students were provided with housing and sent to the States for a year with a monthly allowance of $200. But on summer holidays they didn’t provide housing, and we had to pay for the hostel. He learned about Malakhov’s deplorable financial situation, the dean of the journalism department allowed him to live in his cottage, instructing the student to feed the cat and water the flowers, while he and his family went to Miami for the summer.
