Old Russian names are rare and beautiful. How to choose the best among rare and beautiful Orthodox names for girls

Female Russian names of Slavic origin are distinguished by the presence of two stems. These are such wonderful names as Miroslava, Svetlana, Yaroslava. A Russian female name always has good meaning, which can be seen even with the naked eye. Russian Orthodox names are still relevant.

The secret of the two foundations lies in the fact that the Slavs believed in the unity of the name and its owner. To a wide circle They gave a false name, and only close relatives knew the real one. The child was given a middle name already in adolescence, because it was associated with his character, habits and views. There were funny names and downright strong ones. The tradition has survived to this day, and many parents give their children other names at baptism in order to protect them from the evil eye and damage. Therefore, Russian female names have become popular far beyond the borders of the country.

Origin of female names

The most surprising thing is that most of the names are not Russian at all. The stream that brought new things to the Russian people in names was Christianity. After the adoption of the new faith, the culture was enriched with various Byzantine, Greek and Jewish names. It's hard to imagine that many of them that surround us today were once part of someone else's history.

The list of original Slavic names has characteristic meanings:

  • Bogdana.
  • Wanda.
  • Lada.
  • Hope.
  • Love.
  • Faith.
  • Mila.
  • Vlada.
  • Ruslana.

  • Lyudmila.

Among the Slavic options there are also unusual female names. These are Assol, Vanda, Zabava, Milana, Radmila, Tsvetana, Yesenia, Iskra, Veselina, Berislava, Radosveta.

Many species were borrowed from the Greeks. They predominate among foreign names that have taken root on Russian soil. You might be surprised to look at the list and find such familiar words.

Traditional name choice

The Slavs, like other ancient peoples, carefully chose the names of their children. They believed that a name brings meaning to a person’s life, so they tried to name babies favorably. It was a whole ritual with its own characteristics and rules. Today, this ritual is neglected and sometimes given downright funny names. Girls are called whatever the parents want, without worrying about the fate of the child. People think that by naming a child after a celebrity or relative, they are giving him a good destiny.

Despite the fact that there are truly a lot of Russian names, it is sometimes difficult for parents to choose the right one for their beloved daughter. You can choose the first one you come across, but often it just doesn’t fit your tongue. It is worth remembering the nuance of the choice - the rougher it sounds, the more audacity and strength is put into it. Soft names with vowel sounds endow the girl with softness and tenderness.

IN recent years There has been a tendency to call girls by old names, which many have already forgotten. These are such wonderful names as Yarina, Lyubomira, Milana, Zlata, Milena. These are mostly Orthodox names.

When we receive a name at birth, we receive character, talents, and abilities. This set makes every name...

After the introduction of Christianity in Rus', children at birth began to be given names according to the Orthodox calendar in honor of Orthodox saints. The child receives the heavenly protection of the chosen saint, and a close spiritual connection is created between them. The saint becomes for the child his guardian angel for life.

Every day Russian Orthodox Church honors the memory of a saint, sometimes several saints. On these days of remembrance, corresponding to their names, people celebrate name days.

You can choose a name for your child based on the Orthodox calendar (saints). It contains full list Orthodox names for both girls and boys. When choosing a name, they usually focus on the date of birth. The calendar provides a list of months and the days they contain. For each day, the names of the saints whose memory is honored on a particular day are indicated.

If for some reason the parents are not satisfied with the names suitable for the child, you can choose names from other days or the eighth day from the moment the child is born. Our ancestors named babies on the eighth day after birth. If names intended for the birthday or the eighth day are not suitable, you can name the baby with a name that falls on the fortieth day after birth.

Every year Orthodox calendars names are updated. The 2018 calendar includes more male names than female ones. In this regard, girls are often called female names derived from male ones, for example, Alexander, John, Eugene. Then a male patron saint is chosen for the girl.

The choice of name depends largely on the time of year in which the child was born.

  • Girls born in winter are physically and mentally strong, purposeful, assertive and have a strong will. Therefore, they try to give softer names in order to give the girl more femininity and tenderness.
  • In the spring, girls are born who are selfish, vulnerable, timid, and afraid of change. In the future, these girls often find it difficult to arrange their personal life. They are given names such as to give the child confidence and decisiveness in character.
  • Summer children have a bright temperament and love adventure. Such girls usually become leaders in any team. They are recommended to be given calm names to balance their choleric temperament.
  • Autumn girls are endowed with such character traits as integrity, independence, and coldness. Usually there is no sense of tact. To compensate for the missing softness and femininity, gentle names are chosen.

What is better: rare church ones or Russian women's ones of today?

There are many beautiful female names, both familiar Orthodox ones and non-standard, rare ones that came from antiquity.

Most of the names that are used today in everyday life appeared in Russian culture from antiquity. Many of them have no Slavic origin. Russian female names appeared as a result of the development of ancient Slavic culture, associated with the customs, life, and faith of the ancient Slavs.

When choosing a name for a girl, you need to imagine how comfortable the child will feel with it in life and in society. Sometimes, in pursuit of originality, parents choose pretentious names, because of which their children suffer in the future. The name must correspond to the traditions of the area and belong to the culture in which the girl lives.

The key factors when choosing a name are its melody and harmony, as well as consonance with the surname and patronymic. The name should emphasize the baby’s individuality and endow the girl with beauty and femininity.

In ancient times, the meaning of a woman’s life was motherhood and maintaining the family hearth, therefore the meaning of many names contained the purpose of a woman - creating a family and its well-being.

A significant part of the ancient church names is of Greek origin, for example, Inessa, Evdokia, Veronica. Although they are considered ancient, they can often be heard in society, so they can be safely chosen for a child.

Today, many parents are returning to their roots and Russian culture, so today you can often hear old names. Especially often they use such names as Zlatotsveta, Vera, Dobromila, which do not hurt the ears and are positively perceived by society.

However, many ancient church names can be difficult to understand. A name that is too complicated can lead to the fact that in the future it will be difficult for the child to get along with the children's team.

Most people choose familiar and modern Russian names:

  • Catherine.
  • Elena.
  • Xenia.
  • Daria.
  • Elizabeth.
  • Sophia.

The choice depends on the preferences of the parents, the degree of religiosity and cultural values.

How to choose Slavic names for girls

Rare Slavic names for girls (Vedagora, Gorislava and others) or common ones, such as Lada, for example, were chosen according to a special principle. It consisted of the following:

  1. A temporary name was given. From the moment of birth until a certain age, girls were not called anything specific name, but were simply called “child”, “child”, “girl”, or even just a number - “second”, “third”.
  2. Naming. After observing what inclinations the girl showed and what she was striving for, the parents could help choose a name.
  3. Honor your ancestors. Could they name the girl by any name? outstanding personality in the family. For example, great-grandmothers-handicraftsmen, grandmothers-witches, and so on.
  4. Honor the ancestral God. When a particular god or deities were worshiped in a Slavic family, their names could also be passed on to people at the request of parents or grown-up children.

Naming was carried out for a girl in such a way as to first “wash away” the temporary name in a lake where there is no flowing water (for boys - in a river with flowing water). Then they “attached” the new name through a special ritual. The sorcerer performed the ritual at the temple. This is all done when the girl reaches a certain age:

  • if the qualities of a future sorceress, priestess, or sorceress manifested themselves, then the girl was named at the age of 9;
  • when a child shows all the qualities of a warrior, or she was a princess - at 12 years old;
  • children showing qualities of other classes - at 16 years old.

Slavic mythology describes a number of conditions in the traditions of the ancient Slavs, when children or adults could be renamed. This usually happened if a new name “from the language of the people” was already fixed in a girl or woman, taking into account the passage of one or another stage of life, where she showed herself in a special way. They could carry out new naming rituals when, for some reason, the previously given name was not suitable. It rarely happens that a temporary name is assigned to a child for life.

The name of a girl, girl, woman must definitely sound! Our Slavic ancestors believed that spoken words had magical power, including this also applied to names, which were repeated out loud more often than other words. The future mother and wife must receive strength from Nature, the elements, and the gods in order to successfully create virtuous offspring. Slavic culture In many ways, the Russian North has now most fully preserved these traditions, especially in the villages.
