When Marshall was 12 years old, he and Debbie finally settled on the East Side of Detroit, Michigan. Here the boy got into a lot of trouble. In the fourth grade, he was terrorized every day by a high school student named DiAngelo Bailey. It was no better at school. Marshall had to change schools every two or three months, and it was difficult for him to make friends, do well in school, and stay out of trouble.
In the winter of 1983, Marshall was beaten so severely that he lay in a coma for ten days. Years of suffering will have a serious impact on Eminem's entire work. In 1984, Marshall and his mother return to Kansas City, and Marshall again meets with his uncle Ronnie. “My uncle was actually my best friend,” Marshall recalls. Ronnie was a fan of rap music and recorded several of his rap tapes for Marshall. In general, Ronnie had a great influence on Eminem's subsequent work. When Marshall was still 9 years old, Ronnie brought a tape that changed everything Marshall thought about rap: Ice T's "Reckless." At the age of 13, Marshall began to invent and record his own raps. Marshall became interested in rap music, he began rapping in school cafeterias, doing freestyles there, and eventually gained a reputation as a capable rapper. He takes the name Eminem.
At age 15, Marshall met his future wife, Kim Scott, at school. That same year he founded his first rap group.
“I would never do it without him,” Eminem says about Ronnie: “If it weren’t for him, I would never do this.”
At the age of 17, Marshall left school, after which he tried several strange low-paid professions. Eminem performs live every night on one of the local radio stations.
In 1995, Eminem made his debut as part of the group Soul Intent, which also included Proof (former member of the group D-12 and best friend Eminem) and DJ Butterfingers. Almost nothing is known about this release today, except for a few facts: 1. The disc contained the track Fucking backstabber dedicated to the African-American rapper Champtown, with whom Eminem recorded several tracks in the past, but who subsequently tried to molest Eminem’s wife Kim. 2. One of the tracks was called Biterphobia, which few who listened to it call one of the best tracks of the then-beginning rapper. 3. Today this disc is almost impossible to find, since its circulation was negligible, due to the lack of sponsors from the group.
In 1996, Eminem recorded his first album, Infinite, which went unnoticed due to Detroit's oversaturation of hip-hop. Moreover, he was even accused of copying the style of rappers Nas and Az. Eminem recalls: "'Infinite' was an album where I wanted to figure out what style of rap I would perform in, how I would sound and present myself." Solo debut Eminem took place in 1996, when his album “Infinite” was released on an independent label. Eminem himself now views it more as a demo, but at that time he was very upset by the cold reception this record received.
Just for himself, he began working on the next EP, “Slim Shady.”
Legend has it that the famous black rapper Dr. Dre accidentally discovered Eminem's demo tape in Interscope boss Jimmy Iovine's garage and immediately became interested in the young talented newcomer. However, according to the facts, the Doctor did not sign a contract with Eminem until he won the Los Angeles Battle. Then the couple began working together. Dr. Dre felt that the songs from the Slim Shady EP needed to be re-released. This is how “Slim Shady LP” (1999) was born, which became a bestseller. The popularity of the disc was especially facilitated by the success of the video clip for “My Name Is,” which was often played on MTV. Eminem's controversial and edgy lyrics began to cause widespread controversy. Some believed that the rapper was exposing the ulcers of society, others that he was inciting hatred towards individual categories society (women, gays) and people in general. Some found him witty and impudent, others rude and narrow-minded. The artist himself spoke about this as follows: “I say things that shock people. But I don't do things that shock people. I'm not trying to be the next Tupac, but I don't know how long I'm going to be on this planet. So while I’m here, I try to do as much as I can.”
Dr. Dre completely changed Eminem's life. They say that after hearing a freestyle by a guy hiding under the pseudonym Slim Shady on one of the many radio Los Angeles, Dre launched a real hunt for the white rapper from Michigan. He, of course, achieved his goal, and soon Eminem signed a contract with the Aftermath label. And from that moment on, things went uphill for Slim Shady. The pair began working together, and soon the first single from the new album, "the Slim Shady LP", was released, containing two tracks "I Just Dont Give a Fuck" and "Brain Damage". And then there was the super-successful release of the album, videos for “My Name Is”, “Guilty Conscience”, “Role Model”, performances with such performers as Dr. Dre, Limp Bizkit, Kid Rock, Xzibit.
Between the first and second albums, Eminem managed to appear on the disc of his teacher “Dr. Dre 2001." Eminem's second full-length work, The Marshall Mathers LP, appeared in the spring of 2000 and again caused a lot of controversy. As the title implies, here the rapper spoke not on behalf of a fictional character, but on his own behalf. High popularity accompanied such things as “The Real Slim Shady” and “Stan”. The latter (sung with singer Dido and released as a single in 2001) depicted, as it were, “two halves” of Eminem: the artist himself and his average fan, who is completely blown away.
The shocking video clip for this song again caused a lot of criticism. With his behavior, the artist only fueled the passions flaring up around him: he either punched the face of a man whom, as it seemed to him, his wife was kissing in a bar, or he spoke unflatteringly about his own mother in the text of one of the compositions (for which his parent sued him) . Numerous people spoke out against Eminem public organizations. The Gay and Lesbian Association said it would boycott Eminem's Grammy nomination. Nevertheless, at the 2001 Grammy Awards, Eminem received as many as three awards, thanking everyone who perceived his album as music, and not as a reason for a scandal. In June of the same year, Eminem appears as a member of the group D12, which releases its debut album Devil's Night. The singles Purple Hills and Fight Music gain wild popularity among the public, which ensures the group's success and future prospects. In May 2002 it was released new clip Eminem's Without Me, in which he takes on Moby and Limp Bizkit, followed by the release of the rapper's highly anticipated album, The Eminem Show, in June. The album was certified eight-platinum and has sold more than 20 million copies worldwide to date. In October of the same year, the singer’s autobiographical film “8 Mile” was released. In it, the rapper played the beggar rapper Jimmy Smith, nicknamed Rabbit. The film was very warmly received by the public, and the soundtrack to it, the song Lose Yourself, earned the singer an Oscar. The total budget of the film was $41 million.
In April 2004, Eminem appeared in public again, only as a representative of the group D12, which released its new album D12 World. In the first week, 550 thousand copies of the albums were sold. The video for the song “My Band” gained great popularity among the public, in which Eminem sarcastically emphasizes that D12 remains just a famous group, while Eminem himself becomes a star on a planetary scale. And in November of the same year he released his fifth studio album, Encore. What’s most interesting is that this is the rapper’s first album (not counting Infinite) who did not receive a single Grammy statuette; in almost all nominations, Eminem lost to the new hip-hop star Kanie West. Then there were rumors that this was the rapper's last solo album; in December 2005, Eminem released a collection of his best songs, Curtain Call: The Hits, which included his three new compositions. A year later, in December 2006, the rapper, on his own behalf, released a compilation of the best tracks recorded on Shady Records, in which Eminem introduces new musicians Cashis and Boby Creekwater to the public. In support of the album, the only video “You dont know” was shot. In 2007, together with T.I, he recorded the song “TouchDown” for the album T.I. vs T.I.P. After which Eminem left show business for more than two years.
In February 2009, the rapper made a name for himself again by recording a new track, “Crack a bottle,” together with his colleagues 50 cent and Dr. Dre. This track rose to number one on the Billboard Chart in just a few weeks. Then it became known that the rapper’s new album would be released on May 19, 2009. In April of the same year, a video for the song “We Made You” was released, in which the rapper shows that he does not change his old style at all. Then the third single was released, which was called 3 A.M. with a rather drug theme, and a clip where Eminem portrays a crazy maniac who kills everyone in the clinic he meets. After two more singles Old Time's Sake and Beautiful, Relapse itself comes out. But Eminem is not discouraged, and announces Relapse 2 (There will be joint tracks with T.I., Stat Quo and Jay-Z), which he planned to release in late 2010. The release of the new album has been postponed to 2010. However, on December 21, 2009, Eminem released a re-release of his sixth studio album, called Relapse: Refill. Relapse: Refill features seven tracks, including "Forever", featuring Drake, Kanye West, and Lil Wayne(as the soundtrack to the film More Than A Game), "Taking My Ball" (also previously released with the video game DJ Hero) and five never before heard. "I want to provide more material for fans this year as I originally planned, hopefully these tracks will help fans wait for Relapse 2, which you will see next year," Eminem said.
