“You need to be an artist by nature. This is a certain type of people. If you are not an artist, you will probably never become one. And if you pursue the goal of selling paintings, even less so. If you are an artist, then to become famous, you need to believe in your talent. I sold my first works when I was in art school. After the tour, I sold all my plein air. This happened to me recently entertaining story: I drew pictures without any second thought, then a whole stack of them accumulated, and suddenly bam - a personal exhibition at After Six at Winzavod. Today the price consists of gallery percentages, cost art materials, baguette and my time. When I buy a pack of paper, I say: “I bought a pack of masterpieces of world art, all that remains is to create surplus value.”

“As my godfather has been telling me all my life: “Don’t be a fool!” So I'm still trying not to screw it up at this stage. I don’t really remember the story of the first sale, I remember that it was around the same period when I started writing in general, three or four years ago. Three or four days after I dared to post my training sketches on Facebook, people started asking for them as gifts. I gave. Then someone asked if I was selling them. I asked my dad if I was selling. Well, I started selling little by little. The ones I drew with my teacher were on watercolor paper. I remember how I sold my first painting. It was summer, I went to a meeting with a client. Got caught in the hellish rain and got wet to the skin. Thank God, the pictures were in the backpack, nothing from the art got wet. It was wildly disgusting and humiliating to come to a meeting in squelching moccasins. But everything went well, we bought three works, including my first. A small underpainting on a piece of paper under glass. What am I drawing? Probably these are the impressions and associations that arise when you look at a certain combination of objects. Like a key in an intercom. You put a glass, a sandwich and a cigarette, and a mechanism inside you works, you remember all sorts of things, you smile, you dream of drinking. So we are the heroes. One day I was on the subway going to college and drawing some things in a notebook, something on an alcoholic theme. A girl sits down next to me, looks over her shoulder for a long time, smiles, she’s probably driving with a hangover! And then she asked her to draw something and gave her a piece of paper. Well, I drew her some kind of ugly lion and signed it. She was wildly pleased, however, she got off at the next stop. I didn’t particularly study economics, so I set prices for my paintings according to my horoscope. This year is good for Taurus. And the scales are getting cheaper.”

“To sell your work, you have to work hard, communicate a lot with people and constantly show everyone what you do. I sold my first works to a bank: I was seventeen years old, and I made several copies of my works for them. In this area, nothing should happen quickly, everything should be thought out and clearly implemented. And this long haul from young artist to a professional. Once I got stuck in an elevator on the way to the workshop, there was a clear, meaningful picture in my head, after six hours and lack of air, everything changed radically - and I started working with plexiglass. True, after some time I returned to painting again. In conditions modern market art is difficult to talk about pricing. The price consists of the cost of materials, the format of the work and the fee for my work. I usually don't go below the last sale price. How more pictures they buy from an artist, the more expensive his work becomes.”

“To become a successful artist, you need to believe, work in the right direction and communicate with the right people. I sold my first painting to my fan, and with the money I earned I went on a trip. Art itself is a sacrifice. Only crazy and brave people draw. Which is essentially the same thing. Anyone can become the hero of my works: I find all people and events interesting. The most mysterious story, which happened to me as an artist: I exhibited in Ecuador. Twelve of my paintings are still there, in a country where I have never been. When evaluating a painting, it is important to understand that you did not spend an hour with a brush on its creation, but your whole life. The artist puts all his experience, knowledge, and emotions into his painting, no matter whether it is a piece of paper or a stone sculpture.”

“An artist must work, work, work and develop. Don’t be afraid to show your paintings and meet people. I sold my first painting relatively recently, maybe a year ago. Previously, it seemed that it was worthless to sell your work. In general, I was ordered to draw a picture on medieval theme, anything (in my opinion, it didn’t matter to the customer what it would be). Well, I drew a castle. The only one prerequisite was to make it in oil on canvas. At the time of handing over the painting, the oil had not yet dried and there was a possibility that the paint would smear and the painting would be damaged. And the buyer could get pretty dirty. Five years ago, when I was still studying at Moscow State Academy of Arts, we went to Kalyazin for a week in the open air. The students scattered around the city, wherever they wanted, and drew whatever their heart desired. Mostly they were divided into small groups. There were five girls in my group. We went everywhere together - and so local residents not scary (and they weren’t too friendly) and you won’t get lost. But still, one day I was left alone near an abandoned building; workers were dismantling it. Hammers thundered, bricks and axes flew from the windows. I stood with my back to this house, trying not to pay attention to the noise and people swarming in it. For some time I even managed to remain unnoticed. But as soon as they saw me, there was no time for work. I felt scared. A dozen hefty men, like kites, circled around me, looking at me and furiously discussing something in their incomprehensible language. I was ready to run away, abandoning my sketchbook, my paints, and my unfinished painting. But after about five minutes they began to disperse and crawl back into the house. I began to frantically get ready. Suddenly the largest of the men came out of the dark doorway and began to walk towards me, his hands were behind his back, but he was clearly holding something in them. As he approached me, he smiled wider and wider (obviously from embarrassment). Approaching me closely, he looked with pity at my paint-smeared palms and face, then waved his hands and handed me construction gloves so that I would no longer get dirty. It was very touching. I try not to raise prices, I’m still a newbie. Firstly, the price depends on the size. Secondly, from the material. Thirdly, on the time spent on this or that picture. And, most importantly, how dear she is to me.”

“From my experience, you don’t have to be famous to sell paintings. It is enough to have your own style and create a sought-after product. How to make a painting trendy or find its buyer - no one can answer this question. It's probably a combination of skill, luck and taste. However, I believe that the key to success is to draw what you like and enjoy life. If you are enjoying yourself, the new owner of your work will not be sad either, and so everything will go in a circle, and maybe this will be such a contribution to world peace. I sold my first painting as a child, in the studio where I was taught how to paint silk. It was round, made in batik style. I don’t remember the details, but it was enough for school breakfast then. But we bought the second one a couple of years ago and immediately at a price I liked. This deal was the first step in turning a boring lawyer into an artist. Initially, I didn’t understand at all how much I wanted to get for the painting, because I’m not a “business” person per se. But as soon as my friends from the art world found out that I was now positioning myself as an artist, they immediately gave me a central authority, found people who understood something about art appreciation, consulted with gallerists and asked how much they had already bought from me for (and they bought from me for as much as people themselves offered). Since that moment, nothing has changed fundamentally, but I have become more confident in my art and the price at which it is bought.”

“What is fame, anyway? I believe that Van Gogh, Egon Schiele, Monet, Titian are famous because everyone knows them, and not in a certain circle or only in a certain generation. Be famous artist in a party - this is something that, for example, means nothing to me. My friends know that I am an artist, my family knows it, but this does not mean fame. At the moment I have had sixteen exhibitions, I think I am known to some extent, but this is not the success, but the fact that maybe no one knows, but if they saw it, they would fall in love with the works. I started selling my paintings almost as soon as I realized that I would be an artist, it was at the age of sixteen at the Student Art Fair, where I got in by submitting an application on the Internet, a year later I won a trip to Miami in their competition. Then she sold paintings at exhibitions in which she participated. I remember how happy I was when they bought one work in Cologne. Now I sell some of my paintings on OilyOil and copies on Art Brut. Sometimes people buy or order paintings from me personally. I sold my first painting at the SAF fair. It was bought by an art history teacher from France. It was A5 size, with a watercolor of a girl with one eye. I didn’t know at all how much anything should cost, I knew that I wanted to eat, but the sandwich cost 200 rubles, well, I sold it for 200. A year later, when I participated in the Blooom exhibition in Cologne, the appraiser gave similar work from the same series 600 euros. I then realized that apparently I really wanted to eat.

“I’m still at the beginning of my journey, two things are obvious to me now. First, you need to work hard, not be lazy and not drive yourself into depression and creative paralysis. The second necessary component of success is communication with people. I’m an introvert and it’s not always easy for me to cope with this, but, in any case, there’s nowhere in life without it, and I’m learning. Starting to sell paintings is not so difficult; now there are many festivals, markets or online galleries. It’s more difficult to make sales stable so that you can count on it as a monthly source of income. The first painting I managed to sell was commissioned. The customer wanted work on canvas, and then I saved on materials and never painted on real canvas. And so I thought: “ Stretched Canvas on a stretcher - this is for the bourgeoisie, I’ll do everything myself.” I bought a piece of canvas, a stretcher, sizing, primer, and a stapler (all together, of course, it was more expensive than the prepared canvas). Well, it began: with difficulty, I stretched the canvas as best I could, then sizing, drying, priming... In the end it turned out quite crooked, the stretcher was skewed, and the painting became in the shape of a parallelogram. But the picture was accepted; it depicted some cosmic flowers, even quite pretty ones. Then I earned five thousand rubles.

The most meaningful things always happen inside, and it’s hard to talk about. There are a lot of little stories happening to me right now. And I don’t even know which ones are important yet. Rain, fear, summer, friends, cherry pies, war. This is all, in fact, the most important thing; what grows inside me is what I then try to draw.

I’m freelancing now, and in this mode, it’s true that I can draw regularly, but the work is sometimes empty, sometimes full. It’s not always possible to earn enough and sometimes you want to get an office job for greater financial stability. The price consists of several factors: materials, format, time spent. I have never been able to calculate accurately, so now I am rather based on the final price for which I can sell this work. It's stupid to set a price too high and wait for something. I work quite quickly and now the prices for my work range from 5,000 to 40,000 rubles. If stable sales become established, I will increase them little by little. Sometimes I sell small works even cheaper. It’s better than storing everything, stuffing it on shelves, and I’m glad that almost anyone can afford to buy a picture from me.”

“How to become a successful artist? First, stand in front of the mirror and honestly answer the question why you need all this. Secondly, be ashamed of laziness. Thirdly, it’s more wonderful to live. Fourth, die. Fifthly, come back to life 70 years later and check whether you were such an artist and whether it was worth playing this lottery all your life. As for selling my work, my answer is simple: watch football, it has everything you need for commercial success. For the sake of art, he could sacrifice living in a metropolis. But what is considered art? Most likely, it begins immediately after the death of the artist. I'm thinking about it. In my works are all those who inspired me to write them. And it could be anyone and anything: a phrase from notebook Filonov, image of a cow from the pages of a Soviet photo magazine from 1973, hands of a saleswoman from the fish department. Six years ago, sitting in the office, with great excitement I began to draw on stationery pieces of paper, without even knowing what these scribbles would lead to. Pricing is based on my unique technology(I work with an awl, darts, screwdriver and other tools on paper), deadlines for writing, feelings of personal satisfaction, agreements with Dutch gallery"No Man's Art", with which I have been collaborating for the last year and a half."

“It’s difficult to answer such a question when you yourself are not very famous. And it depends on the area. For example, there is interior and contemporary art. In the first case, you just need to distribute your works and catalogs to salons and send them to good interior designers. In case contemporary art, then I think you need to either “springboard” from the university’s graduation exhibition and then participate in competitions, or just be in the art community and do something of high quality. You can also be a cunning opportunist. In general, I think there are many ways, and finding your own is also an art. I sold my first painting to a friend for 2000 rubles. I was sitting and drawing, he came to visit, he liked it and bought it. I don't think you have to sacrifice for art. When I spend a lot of energy, time, when I stop communicating with friends for a while because I draw, I don’t feel like I’m sacrificing anything. Nothing is subtracted. Only the other way around. When I think about price, I base it on the format of the painting and the time spent on its production. And, of course, from the fact that I really like what I draw.”

“The most important thing is to become an artist who is honest with himself. For now I am concerned about this very issue. The world is teeming with wonderful amateurism. And I, of course, am part of it, in every possible way looking for ways to retreat, towards something significant, better quality, and, as a result, sincere. Contrary to popular belief, selling paintings is important factor grades and a major transition from amateur to professional. It doesn’t matter what you sold or to whom, the motivation for purchasing the painting is important, it’s like a universal justification for your activities. My first painting was bought by designer Alexander Arutyunov at one of the exhibitions this year. It was a very personal painting that was bought, I think, for very personal reasons. It was very fast, I did not immediately understand what was happening, when I already had a significant amount of money in my hands, and the picture disappeared into the darkness of the car interior. Art does not require sacrifice. Art requires all of you, and this is not a sacrifice. Art does not tolerate opportunism, compromise, bragging, or mediocrity. The main characters of my paintings are G-d, human virtues, human deviations and their status in the “everything is complicated” relationship. My painting (exactly the one in the photo) adorns the cover of a book published in Paris. When I was fifteen years old, I staged unauthorized exhibitions in Boston and New York during my volunteer work. Daring hooligan antics consisted of demonstrating my early works in the assembly halls of American nursing homes. Where, talking about the picture with the hourglass, about lost time, he brought elderly American women to tears. The pricing of my work consists of a pinch of honesty, a drop of a smile, a handful of passion and a dollop of vanity. Well, seriously, there are man-hours, and there are soul-hours. How much energy and emotions are invested, so much should be returned in equal equivalent. In money, emotions or other currency."

Packaging of the painting

You can pack the painting at the post office immediately before sending it, or at home. The client's corrugated cardboard containers must be without traces of adhesive tape. If the painting is sent from a legal entity, then it is allowed to seal the packaging with company tape.

Painting insurance

At the post office you can issue a declared value, which is a kind of “insurance”. The service commission is 4% of the payment amount. If the painting is planned to be sent, for example, by EMS, then the “insurance” rate is 1%. There is one “but”: the declared value cannot exceed 500 thousand rubles from both the sender - an individual and the sender - organization.

The value of a work of art is confirmed by a purchase receipt or a certificate from an appraiser.

If the painting is damaged, delivery times are changed or the work is lost, the recipient will be entitled to appropriate compensation.

The amount of declared value is indicated on the packaging in numbers and also in words (in brackets).

  • passport and certified power of attorney
  • customs declarations in forms CN22 and CN23, if the painting is valued at more than 28 thousand rubles.

Any painting is accompanied by an export permit. The document is drawn up in the Department of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation for the Central Federal District.

If you apply on your own, you will need to prepare a certain list of documents, photographs of the painting of the required size and resolution, submit an application with the package attached to an authorized expert, and wait for his conclusion. After receiving an opinion on a work of art with an application and another package of documents, you need to contact the specialists of the Department of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation for the Central Federal District to obtain a certificate or permit. The application may take up to a month to be considered.

When contacting Artpost, the company’s specialists take care of all bureaucratic procedures. In addition, the sender will save time, since we have the opportunity to more quickly go through all stages of obtaining a permit. Instead of a month, it may take three days, for example.

Packaging of the painting

Packaging rules for sending work abroad do not differ from the rules for domestic shipments. You just have to take into account that there are size restrictions for parcels depending on the country of receipt. So, for example, for China and Germany, the height of the painting, including packaging, cannot exceed 150 cm, and the width - 300 cm.

Painting insurance

Not all countries can send paintings with a declared value, which serves as “insurance” for a work of art. This issue must be clarified with postal service specialists, depending on where the parcel needs to be delivered.

Pricing

The list of the most expensive paintings in the world opens with “Salvator Mundi” (1499) by Leonardo da Vinci. It was sold for $450 million at Christie's in New York a year ago. The audience gave a standing ovation; the price seemed simply crazy. We will never know who was ready to pay 30,056,310,000 rubles for Da Vinci’s work. This sale became a high-profile event in the art world, everyone began to wonder what the real price of art is?

Why, for example, are two works by P. Picasso “Boy with a Pipe” (1905) and “Portrait of Dora Maar” (1941) different in price by 10 million dollars, although they were written by the same author?

What do buyers of Mark Rothko’s works invest in if “even a child can draw like that”? Why were the works “White Center” (1950), “No. 1” (1954), “Untitled” (1952) sold for incredible amounts of money?

So, the next question arises: how is the price of art determined? It is clear that the price of works by artists who have already passed away is determined by auction houses and galleries. What about those who write their works now, in the 21st century, and want to sell them? How can an artist set a price for his work? Should the price of early works be different from later ones? Will works created in different styles cost the same? And if the artist is lucky and his work appears in a state museum, will the price of his other paintings increase?

Website www.site invites artists and sculptors to set their own prices, depending on how much they want to earn from the sale of the proposed work of art. Whereas in auction houses The initial assessment of the work is carried out by an expert commission, and the final price after the auction is completely unpredictable.

And if the expert commission, when assessing the value, is guided by vast experience, as well as many factors for assessing famous, world-famous artists, then what should an artist who is faced with the question of self-assessment do?

There are two problematic issues. The real cost of a painting is always quite difficult to determine and most often it turns out to be subjective. On the other hand, the second point is that not all paintings become more expensive over time. And the last difficulty in the individual approach to setting the price of art objects: even if all paintings become cheaper, the works of some artists may increase in price in a short time.

Adequacy of perception of one’s own creativity

Before purchasing a work, if it costs more than 30,000-40,000 rubles, buyers usually study the art market. And if they easily spend this money on work that they like purely aesthetically, crossing the threshold of 40 thousand (the edge is 50,000), the purchase will seem impressive to them. Therefore, they will move on to studying the biography of the artist; most likely they will be interested in his creative path.

Cost of materials

Nowadays, being an artist is not cheap - paints, canvases, varnish, brushes, framing a picture with a frame - all these aspects add up to a decent amount. The artist spends several thousand on the “base” of the painting. And if the canvas is large, the price multiplies many times. We must not forget about the payment of the artist himself. How long did he spend creating the painting? One, two, twenty? Let's add to the materials.

Uniqueness

Works by Marcel Duchamp in the ready-made technique, for objective reasons, will sell at auction for more than works by Joan Miró or Sigmar Polke. After all, it was Duchamp who first began to create works in this technique - “Bicycle Wheel” (1913), “Fountain” (1917). Or, for example, Picasso is the founder of cubism, obviously, his works in cubist technique will be more expensive than work Marevna, who went through this direction in her work.

Exhibition activities

It is important for an artist to be talked about. Projects abroad, personal exhibitions abroad or at home, presenting your works in online exhibitions, selling on live platforms or on the Internet, interaction with other artists flows into the creation of collective exhibitions. A large list of exhibitions under his belt gives the master a huge advantage over other artists, and the buyer of an art piece the idea that the work of the chosen artist is significant in the world.

Mention in the media

Articles on the topic of life and creativity, announcements of personal exhibitions, conversations about life, lectures at art universities in the country, master classes abroad, participation or even victory in international competitions. The reputation of an artist in our time largely depends on his recognition.

Rarity of work gives an advantage

Even if the artist’s technique is extremely unique, but he puts up a stream of works for sale, this is not always good, because they will be able to be owned large number Human. A buyer usually wants the works in his collection to have value. And if the work has general theme For many paintings, it is necessary to note how the work of a given author differs from the others, whether it has any zest of its own.

Another question arises when the author is no longer alive, then the price, of course, is completely different. As a result of closed sales “When is the wedding?” by the artist P. Gauguin was sold for a record 300 million dollars. Now it is impossible to say for sure, but probably if Gauguin lived in our time, the price of his works would not be so exorbitant.

Getting works into private collections

The work can greatly increase in value if the artist's talent has already been appreciated by previous buyers. The popularity of paintings among collectors also increases the chance of success and even provides the buyer with stability and confidence in the investment.

Provenance - history of ownership of a work

This aspect is one of the most important in determining both its price and authenticity. The cost can be affected, for example, by the fact that a piece of art is owned by a public figure or interesting story associated with its writing. For example, paintings are often stolen - this fact, which gives the work some charm, can also affect the final cost. Often even in catalogs state museums such as State Hermitage Museum, indicate the entire path of the work until it enters the museum’s collection.

So, for example, the work presented below by Henri Matisse (1869-1954) has the following origin: received in 1934 from the GMNZI. Previously: Druet Gallery in Paris, collection of S.I. Shchukin, from 1918 - MNZH-I; from 1923 - GMNZI.

Expert opinion

But it does not always imply the museum’s expertise. If we are not talking about a top-class painting that is world famous, the opinion of an outside expert will be sufficient.

Degree of preservation

There is an obvious parallel: the better preserved a painting is, the more expensive it is. Paintings that need restoration will be priced cheaper, as this involves additional financial investments.

Education, experience

It’s not without reason that all artists strive to get an education in the capital’s higher educational institutions. The top are the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg and MGAHI named after. Surikov in Moscow, which have become classics, educational institutions with a long history, attract students from all over the world. Getting there is very difficult, but getting an education in similar establishments extra-class guarantees that the artist has, if not talent, but definitely unique creative abilities.

TOquality

Even with excellent technique and originality, the painting must be painted in high level. There should be no paint stains, dirty lines, faded marks, and the paints should be well mixed. It is necessary to evaluate the quality of the paints and canvas themselves. Even such moments as successful selection of proportions and balance are important.

There is an irrefutable relationship between commercial value and artistic value. But the critics' assessment is not an absolute. It will probably change after some time. To summarize, I would like to emphasize that assessing a painting is often very difficult. The cost of a painting will always directly depend on the buyer’s personal impressions. A significant help to the artist are online work evaluation calculators, which, after filling out all the fields, will enter the price in a matter of seconds. They are designed to encourage artists to bid at a price that is justifiable.
