Mikhail Turetsky: “The singers in my choir earn like pop stars! Mikhail Kuznetsov is the most fantastic voice in the country  If he went into business, he would be richer

10 male voices, different and unique... They sing everything that can be sung, and these works become masterpieces. One day they burst onto the air a cappella, without any musical accompaniment, and became famous.

How it all began?

Today everyone knows the art group “Turetsky Choir”, its composition, style and repertoire. Back in 1990, he sang in and only a narrow circle of fans knew about him. The permanent leader of the ensemble, Mikhail Turetsky, headed it even then. It was Mikhail who came up with the idea to go out into the world and try the a cappella style in public. And so the future group “Turetsky Choir” was born.

A little about Turkish

Mikhail Turetsky was born in 1962 into a family of Belarusian Jews. His musical talent was already evident in early childhood, and his parents decided to give him a suitable education.

Mikhail graduated from the choir school and the Gnesinka - musical school. Having received his diploma, in 1989 he announced a competition among musicians-vocalists who wanted to sing in the men's choir of the Moscow synagogue. Turetsky dreamed of giving a second wind to Jewish sacred music. The Jewish tradition used the technique of singing a cappella, that is, without musical accompaniment. This is how the unique style of performance of the future art group “Turetsky Choir” was born. The composition of the team was supposed to be purely professional.

Rich touring experience has become a source of new ideas and a new role for the group. Less than 10 years have passed since the birth of the choir, when Mikhail Turetsky brought the ensemble to the wide stage, uttering a completely new word in music - “art group”.

"Turetsky Choir": group composition

Open Turkish musical style lies in the limitlessness of the vocal and artistic capabilities of the performers. The group combines in its repertoire not only different times and ethnic groups, but also performance styles - from a cappella to variety performance with choreographic elements.

The group consists of 10 soloists representing all varieties of male voices: from the lowest pitch, called bass profundo, to the high masculine timbre called tenor-altino. Today the group “Turetsky Choir” has the following composition:

  • Alex Alexandrov - born in 1972, dramatic baritone, assistant choreographer, old-timer of the group.
  • Boris Goryachev - born 1971, lyric baritone.
  • Vyacheslav Fresh - born 1982, the youngest soloist, counter-tenor.
  • Evgeniy Kulmis - born 1966, poet and translator, bass profundo.
  • Evgeny Tulinov - born 1964, dramatic tenor, deputy artistic director, Russia.
  • Igor Zverev - born 1968, bass cantanto.
  • Konstantin Kabo - born 1974, baritone tenor, composer.
  • Mikhail Kuznetsov - born 1962, tenor altino, Honored Artist of the Russian Federation.
  • - Born in 1962, permanent leader and leader of the group, lyric tenor, Honored and People's Artist of Russia.
  • Oleg Blyakhorchuk - born 1966, multi-instrumentalist, lyric tenor.

All participants are professional musicians who are not limited to just vocals.

Women's group - an original move

Mikhail Turetsky never stops searching for new opportunities. At some point, it seemed to him that the group’s work lacked the specifics of female vocals. Thus, in 2009, a variation of the group “Turetsky Choir” was born - women's group « SOPRANO Turkish».

From the very beginning, it became clear that Mikhail’s new brainchild would be as unique as the men’s art group. Only the most brilliant professionals were cast, equally attractive to the public not only externally, but also creatively.

The same author's brand, the same form, filled with new feminine content. The group represents all soprano keys and all variations of singing styles. The group has a quality characteristic of the “Turetsky Choir”: the girls have practically no restrictions in the repertoire, so “Turetsky’s SOPRANO” has no analogues in the world of music and pop.

Male or women's team Turetsky performs on stage - this is always bright show, action, musical event with powerful energy, leaving a deep imprint in the hearts of the audience!

- this is a real theater with its own original direction, which combines vocal, acting and choreographic skills.

I adore Evgeniy Kulmis...

Evgeniy Kulmis
Choir director, bass profundo,
with a unique low male voice.

Member of the choir since 1991.

Born on Southern Urals, July 25, 1966 in Kopeisk. Parents noticed their son's musical talent early and sent him to a music school. Evgeny graduated from Chelyabinsk with a red diploma School of Music, at the age of 20 he entered the Gnessin Institute, and a month later he was drafted into the army. After the army, he continued his studies at the institute and then in graduate school. Started musical career like a pianist. In 1991, I saw an advertisement for the admission of singers to the men's choir of the Moscow Choral Synagogue. This was the music that was interesting to him. A unique bass profundo, a voice rare in its depth and at the same time softness (an octave below the bass) attracted the attention of Turetsky. Over the years of concert activity, Evgeniy has performed many different roles: from Mephistopheles to compositions by Viktor Tsoi. He is the author of translations of many texts from the group's repertoire. Married. Two children

An interesting fact is that at the time of the formation of the group, its repertoire included exclusively sacred music for the Moscow Choral Synagogue. However, it was precisely this feature that attracted Evgeniy Kulmis, since his plans included writing a thesis, and it was sacred music that became the object of his studies in his third year at the Gnessin Institute.

Evgeny Tulinov, dramatic tenor

Member of the choir since 1991

Born on August 7, 1964 in Moscow. Honored Artist of Russia, Deputy. artistic director. Ear for music, sonorous treble and excellent sense of rhythm he inherited from his father. During my studies, I practiced a lot of vocals and learned to control my voice.
In 1984, he met Turetsky, together with him he participated in the creation of the Choir, and since 1991 he has been the deputy artistic director of the art group. The parts performed by Evgeniy are unforgettable for connoisseurs of the classics.
He has a bright and colorful dramatic tenor that captivates audiences with its strength, power and penetration. The plasticity of the voice makes it easy to move from opera genre to pop and back sometimes within the same work.
His favorite project allows Evgeniy to reveal himself as an actor: sometimes tragic and dreamy, sometimes full of humor and movement, he made more than one theater cry for himself.
In 2007, Evgeny Tulinov was awarded the title of Honored Artist of the Russian Federation.
Evgeniy is the choirmaster of the group and assistant artistic director.

Alex is not only a soloist, but also an assistant choreographer, and he also brilliantly copies the voices of politicians, artists and can repeat the performance style of anyone pop singer. For example: Toto Cutugno, Boris Moiseev, etc." On stage he is in the very center of the group, which means that it is through him that the emotional stage appeal of the choir members passes.
A fan of Western music, he feels especially confident in the pop directions of the group’s repertoire, performing solos in compositions of different styles.
He loves billiards, diving and beach volleyball. Married. Have children

In 1989, a graduate of the Institute named after. Gnessins Mikhail Turetsky was sent to organize a men's choir at the Moscow Choral Synagogue. Mikhail Turetsky gathered a group of like-minded people who wanted to revive Jewish spiritual music in the USSR (all choir members had musical education, were graduates or students of music educational institutions). This direction practically did not develop during the Soviet period. The exception was the concert in 1945 in the Moscow synagogue of tenor Mikhail Alexandrovich. The first rehearsals of the choir took place in September 1989, and the first public performance in the spring of 1990. The first tour took place in Kaliningrad and Tallinn. In the same year, concerts took place in Leningrad (the large hall of the conservatory) and in Moscow (in the synagogue). During this period, the American charitable organization “Joint” (known for its anti-Semitic campaign against “cosmopolitans” and accusations in the “Doctors’ Case” in 1949-1952) was financing the group [source?].

According to Mikhail Turetsky, “Joint”... needed motivation for the charity committee to raise money... They didn’t think about the musical component and didn’t know what it would lead to.

In 1991, the group toured in France and the UK. The group performed under the name “Jewish Chamber Choir”. The tour aroused great interest, since it was the first time such a group had arrived from the USSR. 17 concerts were given in 15 days. In the summer of the same year, the choir went on tour to Israel. A performance in a synagogue in Jerusalem showed that the choir did not have enough repertoire, but the sound was much better than that of the cantor and choir from this synagogue.

In 1991, the president of the travel company People Travel Club, Marina Kovaleva, accidentally heard a choir rehearsing at Shannon Airport in Dublin. This company has been a sponsor of the choir for several years. After a month and a half tour in the United States, the band wanted to move their performances from the synagogue to concert venues. However, this desire did not find support from sponsors from the Joint. An “alternative” choir was created at the Moscow synagogue. However, not a single soloist from Mikhail Turetsky’s choir moved to the newly formed group.

In 1993, Mikhail Turetsky was awarded by the American Association musical art“Golden Crown of Cantors of the World” (only 8 people in the world have been awarded this distinction).

With the help of Marina Kovaleva, in 1995-1996, a Jewish choir under the direction of Mikhail Turetsky sang in a synagogue in Miami. Some of the choir members remained in the USA, the other part remains in Moscow.

By this time, almost all modern soloists had already appeared in the choir (with the exception of Boris Goryachev and Igor Zverev).

Choir rehearsal with Joseph Kobzon. From the photo archive of the Turetsky Choir Over the years, the needs of the choir grew, the composition of the group changed, the geography of performances expanded, then the choir began to support Logovaz, in particular, B. Berezovsky. In 1996, difficult times came for the choir; for several months no one financed the choir. Then the team was supported by Joseph Kobzon. With him, the choir traveled to many countries of the former Soviet Union, and was in Chechnya and Israel.

Interesting fact: during the tour in Chechnya (after the first Chechen war) the then Deputy Prime Minister Shamil Basayev, at that time the most famous terrorist in the world, was responsible for the safety of the artists (Kobzon and the choir).

After the end of a joint tour with Kobzon in Russian cities, in March 1998 a concert was given in Great hall Conservatory in Moscow. The concert took place on Saturday, a day forbidden for any work in Judaism. For this reason, a conflict arose with the chief rabbi of the Moscow choral synagogue. The choir was forbidden to perform within the synagogue. The team found support from Moscow Mayor Yuri Mikhailovich Luzhkov.
The choir became municipal. In 1997-1999 The group performed under the name “Moscow Jewish Choir”. During this period, the repertoire begins to change. Along with traditional religious works, classical opera arias, works by Soviet and foreign composers, art songs and yard songs (for example, “Murka”) appear. In 2000, the choir performed on the stage of the Variety Theater. With the help of the oligarch Vladimir Gusinsky, who at that time was the head of the Russian Jewish Congress, the choir again received the opportunity to perform in the Moscow Choral Synagogue. In 2000-2001 There was a tour with Kobzon in Israel, and independent tours in the USA, Australia, Germany and Israel.

In 2002, Mikhail Turetsky was awarded the title of Honored Artist of Russia.

In 2003 the choir acquired modern name: Art group “Turetsky Choir”. This happened during a concert dedicated to the Day of Ukraine and Russia. The repertoire of the group is also changing. Jewish liturgy (e.g., Kaddish or Kol Nidrei, songs in Yiddish and Hebrew) form an essential, but not the main, part of the program. Works of Western and Russian stage, urban folklore (for example, “Murka”), opera arias, Orthodox liturgy (for example, the prayer “Our Father”). In his book “The Choir Master,” Mikhail Turetsky wrote that he did not immediately find an understanding of these changes among his colleagues in the group, but gradually all the soloists agreed with the change in the repertoire. In the same year, several members of the choir (Apaikin, Kalan and Astafurov) left the group. Two new soloists were accepted - Boris Goryachev and Igor Zverev.

In January 2004, the concert “Ten Voices That Shook the World” took place at the Rossiya State Central Concert Hall with the participation of Russian pop stars (Larisa Dolina, Nikolai Baskov, Philip Kirkorov, etc.). In November 2004, the “When Men Sing” concerts took place in Israel (Haifa and Tel Aviv).

Arthur Keish and Mikhail Kuznetsov during a concert in Israel, November 2004. Soon after this, in early December 2004, the “When Men Sing” concerts took place in Kremlin Palace Conventions featuring Emma Chapplan and Gloria Gaynor.

In January 2005, a tour of US cities took place with the concert “When Men Sing” (San Francisco, Los Angeles, Atlantic City, Boston and Chicago), and in 2005-2006. - tour with the program “Born to Sing” in the cities of the CIS. In December 2006, the choir held concerts with new program“Music of all times and peoples” at the Kremlin Palace of Congresses. Then during 2006 - 2007 The group toured the cities of Russia and the CIS countries. In October 2007, Arthur Keish left the team. He was replaced by Konstantin Kabo (Kabanov), who had previously performed leading roles in the musicals “Nord-Ost”, “12 Chairs” and “Romeo and Juliet”. In February 2008, the choir went on tour to Israel with a new program, “Hallelujah of Love.”

The Turetsky Choir debuted in 1990 in the Philharmonic Halls of Tallinn and Kaliningrad. At the beginning of their career, the repertoire of the group differed from the modern shows of the Turetsky Choir. The origins of the art group originate in the Choir at the Moscow Choral Synagogue. In the late 1980s, the future Mikhail Turetsky Choir performed Jewish liturgical music. A few years later, the team’s ambitions went beyond this rather narrow area. Today the group successfully combines in its repertoire the most different genres: operatic, sacred (liturgical), folk, popular music from different countries and eras.

“Very few were interested in this kind of music back then, and no one at all in post-Soviet countries... ... ... So when I got the opportunity, I did some research in the libraries of New York and Jerusalem and discovered this deep, varied, and very stylish layer music, accessible on an emotional level to every person... ... ... Over time, we came to understand that we needed a wider circle of listeners and began to include secular material in our programs. … … … Today our repertoire includes the music of four last centuries: from Handel and hits Soviet era to chanson and the best examples of modern pop culture..."

Born in 1982 in Moscow. Graduated from the Faculty of Music and Fine Arts of the University. Johann Guttenberg in Mainz (Germany). “I was very afraid to send my notes. They seemed to me like “amateur artistic activities,” because I did not systematically study vocals and was, in fact, an ordinary young man with a voice. There are millions of them... I recorded several tracks with my favorite Queens, added a few classic compositions - and sent them by mail to the band’s office. Several months passed... they wrote to me that they were waiting for me at the audition in Moscow. It was simply a miracle... I consider meeting and collaborating with the Choir a great success in my life. It's a great honor for me as young musician
